Malibuite earns dean’s
award with distinction
Lindsey Johnson, of
Malibu, received the spring
2018 dean’s award with
distinction.
Johnson was a graduate
of Marlborough School and
is a member of the Colgate
University Class of 2020.
She is majoring in peace
and conflict studies.
Students who receive
a term grade-point average
of 3.6 or higher while
completing at least three
courses during the spring
2018 semester earn the
dean’s award with distinction.
George Fox University
Malibu native earns degree
Nicole Duyao, of Malibu,
was among more than
800 undergraduate, adult
degree and graduate-level
students who received diplomas
from George Fox
University this spring.
Duyao earned a master of
arts in spiritual formation.
Lehigh University
Malibuite named to dean’s
list
Emily Salove, of Malibu,
was named to the dean’s list
at Lehigh University in the
spring 2018 semester
Dean’s list status is
awarded to students who
earned a scholastic average
of 3.6 or better while carrying
at least 12 hours of
regularly graded courses.
Pepperdine University
Beach volleyball squad
earns AVCA Team Academic
Award
The American Volleyball
Coaches Association
announced that 835 teams
earned the AVCA Team
Academic Award for the
2017-18, including the
Pepperdine beach volleyball
squad.
The 835 teams that
earned the honor this year
breaks the all-time record
set in 2017 of 822 teams.
The beach squad tabbed
a 3.372 cumulative gradepoint
average throughout
the 2017-18 school year,
after 9-of-13 eligible players
surpassed the required
3.30 GPA mark. The highest
grade-point average was
posted by the most recent
alumna, Corinne Quiggle,
who finished her senior
season with a 4.0 GPA in
the year.
The AVCA honored 23
collegiate beach volleyball
programs, surpassing last
year’s record of 19.
The award, which was
initiated in the 1992-93
academic year, honors collegiate
and high school volleyball
teams that displayed
excellence in the classroom
during the school year by
maintaining at least a 3.30
cumulative team GPA on a
4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative
team GPA on a 5.0
scale.
Zhu earns All-American
honors
Katherine Zhu became
the first member of the
Pepperdine women’s golf
program to earn four-time
Women’s Golf Coaches
Association All-American
Scholar honors.
Zhu, an international
studies major who graduated
in April, received numerous
academic awards
over her four seasons. She
was also a three-time Arthur
Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar
and a three-time West Coast
Conference All-Academic
first team pick.
Zhu also earned All-
WCC first team honors as
a junior and appeared in 39
events and 107 rounds over
her four seasons. She had
a scoring average of 76.54
strokes and finished with
three Top 10 and seven Top
20 results.
A 3.50 GPA is required
to make the WGCA All-
American Scholar list. A total
of 1,011 student-athletes
were recognized across all
divisions.
Tennis players earn
Intercollegiate Tennis
Association honors
Five student-athletes
from the Pepperdine men’s
and women’s tennis teams
were recognized as Intercollegiate
Tennis Association
Scholar-Athletes.
On the women’s side,
Laura Gulbe, Luisa Stefani
and Ashley Lahey
received the honors, while
Lautaro Pane and Max
Mendelsohn received recognition
on the men’s side.
Gulbe, a senior, amassed
a 3.66 grade point average
while graduating with
a degree in international
studies. She has been an
ITA Scholar-Athlete for the
last three seasons and was
a WCC All-Academic firstteam
in 2016, 2017 and
2018.
Stefani, a junior, finished
the year with a 3.37
GPA while studying advertising.
She has been a
WCC All-Academic honorable
mention honoree
for the last two seasons.
This was her first ITA Academic
honor.
Lahey, a sophomore, excelled
in the classroom with
a 3.91 GPA while studying
sports medicine. She was
a WCC All-Academic first
teamer in 2018 and has
received WCC Commissioner’s
Honor Roll gold
honors the last two seasons.
This was her first ITA Academic
nod.
Pane, a senior, finished
his career with a 3.52 GPA
while studying economics.
He earned WCC All-Academic
second team honors
in his senior season and
first team in the previous
season. This was his first
ITA Academic honor while
at Pepperdine.
Mendelsohn, a freshman,
also picked up his
first ITA Academic honor
after amassing a 3.77 GPA
while studying economics.
He was also a Pepperdine
Scholar-Athlete this season.

Malibuite hired
by Medicine X
in Malibu
Dan Rowan,
of Malibu, recently
joined Rowan
Malibu business
Medicine X as its
news business development
associate.
Rowan previously
worked for Rowan and
Rose Branding and Gorby
Law. In his past roles,
he has organized digital
resources for media
campaigns, created and
managed digital-related
projects, and presented
progress and initiative reports
to executives in other
departments.
In his new position,
Rowan will be charged
with pitching Medicine
X to large medical companies
in the hopes that
they will sponsor the company’s
digital anecdotes/
initiatives.
Rowan grew up surfing
and skating with his
friends and family in Malibu,
and he attended UCLA
for his undergraduate.
