28 | August 16, 2018 | Malibu surfside news DINING OUT malibusurfsidenews.com The Dish Cuisine aplenty on offer at Malibu Farmers Market Barbara Burke Freelance Reporter Malibu Farmers Market 23519 Civic Center Way, Malibu Phone: (310) 428-4262 Web: www. malibufarmersmarket. net With a cornucopia of healthy, wholesome food for in-market dining, gourmet grab and go, and fresh farm-to-customer items, Malibu’s weekly Farmers Market delights. “The Farmers Market makes for a fabulous family outing,” said Samantha Freedman, of Malibu. “It has wonderful coconut smoothies, Ayurvedic items and amazing sizzling ginger completely-raw waffles that are outstanding and full of carrots and garbanzo beans. It’s all delicious.” Freedman’s 4-year-old son, Spector Freedman, agreed. “It’s all yum!” he said. As one enters the Cornucopia Foundation’s farmers market, held every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., they see an aesthetic array of beautiful, bountiful booths offering fresh, hot cuisine. The market also features live music, a relaxing vibe and reasonably-priced sitdown dining options. It’s tough to choose what to eat. Cuisine options include Indian, Greek, Lebanese, Syrian, African, French, Mexican, Thai, and down-home American cuisine choices such as roast beef and fresh, grilled meats. There are vendors offering organic cuisine, as well as vegan and vegetarian options, and, to top it all off, there are dessert and bakery options. All the vendors cater as well, a fact that appeals to many customers. The market’s proprietor, the vivacious and indefatigable Debra Bianco, gave Malibu Surfside News a tour. “Try this, it’s lovely sundried tomato pesto, or try this grilled sausage that comes straight from the butcher; the owner tells the butcher how much fat to include in the meat and it’s custom-made for her,” Bianco said. “Try these salsas; they’re fresh and were made at 3 a.m. this morning. If you want something sweet, try the Grand Marnier crepes with a hint of orange.” Customers are delighted with the array of choices. “The Farmers Market offers delicious, hard-tofind choices, including offering a wide array of vegetarian foods,” said Sujana Kaushik, who, enjoyed some food with her 7-year-old son, Ocean Godin. “It’s so great to find options from such different cuisines.” Ocean, clearly satiated, smiled broadly. “I like to eat the chocolate Nutella crepes,” he said. A medley of aromas — sweet, savory and spicy — blend with lovely music, the scent of fresh flowers and orchids, and an array of colorful cuisine. Barbara Burke/22nd Century Media fish we offer as well,” Bianco said. “This is just-outof-the-sea halibut and black cod.” The farmers market offers unique food items such as tortillas made from baked cactus, pineapple jerky, honey infused with ginger and turmeric as well as other infusions, and crackers made from baked garbanzo beans, to name a few. The shopping experience at the market is not only tasty, but also fun and educational. For instance, one vendor offers sprouted nuts that have been brought from their acidic state to their alkaline state and thus are more easily digested. “Everything is great at this market,” Jeff Garrett said. “I love coming here for my post-yoga experience. They have wonderful items, including fresh Kombucha. Everyone is happy at this market and it’s a great little community.” Babies are welcome — and pampered — at the Malibu Farmers Market, with one vendor offering fresh, plant-based organic baby food. Malibu Surfside News tried it and queried what made it so tasty. It had delicious ingredients such as dragon fruit, pineapple, coconut, chia seeds, quinoa and wheat germ oil. Fresh produce abounds, with fresh eggs from a Malibu farm, just-picked vegetables and beautiful, ripe fruits. Malibu caterer Gina Clarke loves the market. “The Malibu Farmers Market offers herbs I would have to otherwise travel into Santa Monica or beyond to get,” she said. “They’re fresh and organic — it’s great.” Gourmet doggie delicacies are also featured, with many shoppers coming to the market just for those. Malibu’s Farmers Market is boutique in nature, offering creative cuisine and unique products. Bianco selects vendors that offer fresh, innovative and truly organic food items. For a fresh Farmers Café experience, a gourmet grab-and-go option, or to purchase fresh, selective produce, Malibu’s Farmers Market fits the bill. “We love it and we come each Sunday to try all the different foods,” Kaushik said. “It’s nice that the farmers market brings new flavor and culture to Malibu.”
