School Life Fourth Plinth Schools Award Ceremony On Thursday 26th April I attended the Fourth Plinth School Awards at City Hall with Kanishk and his parents. When walking up to the conference room on the second floor, I was tremendously excited to see a gigantic version of Kanishk’s artwork displayed on the wall! From talking to colleagues, who have previously been invited to the Awards Ceremony, I knew that this meant something very special. As the slope meandered up to the Conference Room, we walked past a huge montage of the borough winners. This year, the London Plinth Schools Award received over 4500 entries and this display revealed the best art for each individual London Borough. On reaching the very top of the slope, City Hall is the most fabulously designed building, we reached Kanishk’s huge piece of artwork! I was very proud to see that his name, Cumnor House School, the name of his work and the media used, had all been displayed. Kanish’s work was actually called Black History Art and was completed at school as part of our cross-curricular Black History commemoration in October. All Year 6 boys took part in the art activity and much of their work was displayed in the school hall. At the time we were focusing upon portraits in Year 6, and the picture depicts a woman’s face divided into two sections. Part of the face is looking straight ahead and the other part is in profile. We used oil pastels to colour the designs; each boy putting his own stamp on his work, working on details such as what skin colour to select, how to display the eyes and design adjoining lips. Kanishk’s entry had a number of flourishing stokes over each face and this was one of the features that I really liked about his work.
