a little, initially, but in our experience, this is momentary.
It is important to know that the staff are there to help
your child in any eventuality, just as a parent would.
It is important that children feel emotionally secure at
school. Give your child the language to talk about their
feelings. If they do have a worry, perhaps about feeling
poorly at school or having a toilet accident, it is worth
rehearsing a few phrases to use. We would always practise
this in school, too. Your child can also bring a comforter
or a special photograph to class, as these provide a personal
reminder of home.

Oliver spent a little bit of time at the school
the year before he started, as he and I
attended the weekly toddlers’ group. It was a
great way for us to get to know Nash House
and for Oliver to make some friends.
Before the start of term, there was a school open
evening at which we got to meet Oliver’s future
teachers and the other parents. At the end of the
summer, the school held a ‘move up’ afternoon,
where Oliver spent time in the classroom with his
teachers and classmates. This meant that when
he officially started in September he knew where
to go and had some idea of what to expect.
Oliver settled in almost immediately. By the
second week he was running through the doors
in the morning, desperate to get into class. All
the staff really took the time to get to know him,
taking note of his likes and interests and made
the classroom warm and inviting for him.
