CLUB CAR OF THE MONTH
AUSTIN HEALEY 100
We have had the car for just over 2 years, buying it from a man in Glenfield in Auckland. I
don’t have any of the early history of the car other than he had spent 8 years restoring it
to the condition that it is in.
It is a 1954 BN1 model, meaning that it is the first model of the Austin Healey to be produced.
The “100” refers to the top speed of 100mph. The 2.7 litre 4 cylinder engine is very
torquey with twin SU carburettors on the side. The gearbox is an interesting arrangement.
The engine and the gearbox were originally used for production of the Austin A90 Atlantic.
Those cars had a column change setup and, when used on the Healeys, the floor change
lever was attached straight to the selectors on the side of the gearbox. This meant that the
gear lever was offset to the left side of the central tunnel.
(The design of the Austin Healey was a vast improvement on the bulbous Atlantic: Ed.)
