NEWS
The Peep Learning Together Programme Praised for
Supporting Parents
An early intervention programme has been developed
by the charity Peeple to show parents how to do
more activities at home that help their children’s
development. The sessions include singing, storytime,
book-sharing, play activities, and time to talk about an
aspect of children’s learning and development. The
sessions help parents make the most of day-to-day
learning opportunities, and provide support in talking
about a range of ideas, thoughts and feelings.
Nottingham’s
Hoodwinked Trail Proves
Huge Success
This summer Nottingham hosted aHoodwinked Wild
in Art sculpture trail that proved incredibly popular
with families. Placed around the city were 33 five-foot
tall fibre glass robins by artists including Julie Vernon,
and 50 beautiful BookBenches created by local
primary schools through the Robin’s Tales education
programme. The benches were placed in the intu
Victoria Centre, intu Broadmarsh, and the Central
Library, as well as in 18 neighbourhood libraries and
leisure centres, and were decorated in avariety of
creative designs.
The trail was brought to Nottingham after two and
a half years of hard work by Nottingham City Council,
Wild In Art, and Nottinghamshire Hospice. Rowena
Naylor-Morrell, Chief Executive of Nottinghamshire
The Peep Learning Together Programme sessions
are held in Children’s Centre hubs across Nottingham
city for a range of age groups. Alex Norris, MP for
Nottingham North, said: ‘the Peep programme provides
vital skills to ensure the home environment can
become a place where children are stimulated and
engaged with the world around them. I’m pleased that
Nottingham City Council is giving parents and carers
this great start.’
Plans to Create Britain’s Best Children’s Library in
Nottingham
Nottingham City Council
announced an exciting new
proposal to develop a modern
Central Library in the revamped
Broadmarsh area. The plans
include creating the best children’s
library in Britain, taking into
consideration local children’s ideas
on what their ideal library would
be. The children’s library would
both be to further local children’s
access to books and learning, but
also would create a new place for
parents to spend time with their
children as they explore stories,
activities, and ideas together.
The library would also have
quiet spaces for meeting and
studying, IT equipment, free
internet access, local studies and
archives. Councillor Collins, leader
of Nottingham City Council, said:
‘Nottingham is a UNESCO City of
Hospice, said: ‘it’s great to see the trail getting such a
positive reaction from members of the public. We have
taken some groups of patients out on the trail to see
the ‘Hands of Hope’ robin they painted in situ in King
Street and the other robins. It’s awonderful familyfriendly
activity to do during the summer holidays.’
Literature, and we want to provide
a bright new Central Library.
Children’s literacy is a big priority
for us, and we are asking children
to send us their designs for their
dream library. I’m sure we’re going
to get lots of creative ideas.’
Nottingham
City
Councillor
Walks 267
Miles in 10
Days for
Children’s
Reading
Charity
Starting on Friday 24th August,
Councillor Jon Collins, the
Leader of Nottingham City
Council, is to walk the 267-
mile Pennine Way trek for
charity in just 10 days. This trek
usually would take at least
three weeks to complete,
so in such ashort time span
this equates to Councillor
Collins walking more than
a marathon each day.
By completing this
challenge Councillor Collins
aims to raise funds for the
Dolly Parton Imagination
Library: abook-gifting scheme
which provides afree book
every month to children from
birth to age five. The scheme
currently runs in nine of the
city’s 20 wards, but with a
fundraising target of £2,670
the councillor hopes to begin
extending the scheme to
the remaining 11 wards.
Councillor Collins said:
‘getting children reading at
an early age is important. We
want every child to benefit
from having these books.’
FOCUS ONEDUCATION
Question time!
Struggling to decidewhich
secondaryschoolisbest?
We’vesummarised some of thekey questionsyou
shouldbeaskingduringyourresearch (and whotoask!)
What next if you’ve
made initial searches
and have drawn up
a shortlist of favoured secondary
schools, mostlikelybasedon
practical requirements such
as distance from home and
admission rules? Once you know
which exams pupil sit and have a
good idea of how they perform,
go astep further and start
making comparisons between the
schools using some sensible and
probing questions.
In the search for your child’s
secondary school, you’ll want
to dig far deeper than the
latest league table results and
the pages of aglossy school
brochure. Which is why we
wanted to help arm you with
some useful questions for when
you visit each school in person.
Be sure toask the same
questions consistently of each
school in order to stack the
responses up against each
other so that, by the end of the
exercise, you’ve a clear feeling
for which school strikes a chord
with you and your child.
To garner the most genuine
insight into each school, try to
organise your visit for a normal
school day (most schools will
accommodate this) and have
the confidence to ask some
very specific questions of the
people you meet. This way
you can bypass the rose-tinted
promotional image presented
to parents during school open
days and you’ll be better placed
to decide which school is best
able to help your child fulfil their
individual potential.
Here are some important
questions to ask every secondary
school on your shortlist:
WHATDOES THE SCHOOL
NEED TO DO TO IMPROVE
FURTHER?
Asking to hear about aschool’s
targets is asensible way to
get advanced warning about
aschool’s weaknesses. Even
‘Outstanding’ schools have
targets for further improvement
included in
their
Selectiontimeline
•31st October 2018 is the closing
date for completed applications
•1st March 2019 is ‘National
Offer Day’. Parents can log onto
their local authority’s website
to see their offer, after which
letters will be posted out.
How can Icontact mychild’s teachers
and how often will they contact me?
Ofsted reports. Visit reports.
ofsted.gov.uk to arm yourself
with background information
before each school visit.
Who to ask? The Head
IS CAREER GUIDANCE
ON OFFER TO PUPILS AS/
WHEN THEY WANT IT?
With access to advice on
possible career paths and higher
education options pupils can fuel
their passions, find inspiration
and make informed choices
throughout their secondary
school life.
Who to ask? Teachers and
pupils
HOW ARE BULLIES AND
BADLY-BEHAVED PUPILS
DISCIPLINED?
This question gives aschool
the opportunity to explain its
behaviour policy and the rules
it enforces on issues such as
banned items, lateness and
standards. Find out how
pupils who break the
rules are treated. For
example, is detention
imposed, are fights
physically broken
up and are pupils
removed from class.
A school’s approach
to bullying must also
be included in the
behaviour policy.
Who to ask? The
Head, teachers and
pupils
IS THERE A POSITIVE
SCHOOL SPIRIT AND CAN
PUPILS CONTRIBUTE TO
THE LOCAL COMMUNITY?
Apositive school spirit can add
greatly to achild’s education
and opportunities to volunteer
on community projects can help
them to develop valuable skills
and life experience. Stories of a
school’s contribution to their local
community (think charity initiatives,
environmental projects etc) are often
picked up and published by the local
media, so keep your eyes peeled.
Who to ask? The Head, pupils
and internet searches
Finally, don’t forget to ask your
child where they think they’d
be happiest. Perhaps the best
choice of secondary
school
jumps straight out to your child
based on their friends’ choices
or the facilities offered by certain
schools, for example, a swimming
pool or dance/performing arts
studios. Add their opinion to the
mix before weighing
up the benefits
of each school
and submitting
your selection
this October
31st.
Take the opportunity to see how
much information you’ll receive
from the school, beyond the
annual parents’ evening and
annual school reports, and how
much interaction with teachers
you’ll be expected or able to have.
Are urgent messages, such as
school closures communicated
via text or email? Could you
expect to see letters being sent
home with your child? Are parents
encouraged to email teachers
directly? And if so, under which
circumstances?
Who to ask?
The Head and teachers

Nottingham Academy
Rated ‘Good’ by OFSTED, Nottingham Academy develops
young people who are able to reason, enquire, create and
evaluate and who are prepared for the ever changing world,
through outstanding teaching and excellent pastoral support.
The Academy has developed an innovative Key Stage 3 (KS3)
curriculum designed to support pupils through the transition
from primary to secondary education whilst developing
academic skills through thematic study. Pupils study English,
mathematics and modern foreign languages as well as crosscurricular
subject areas of Discover, Create and Perform. These
subject areas have been developed to provide pupils with the
opportunity to explore subjects in amore coherent way. The
KS3 curriculum, now in its third year, has been extremely well
received by pupils and parents. Outstanding work has been
produced with pupils engaged and focussed on topics, ranging
from ‘Survival’ to ‘Myths and Legends’.
Lead Principal, Mr Ged Rae, said: “Nottingham Academy is
ambitious in its aims, innovative in its approach and resilient in
its pursuit of excellent outcomes for pupils. We look forward to
showing pupils and their parents the fantastic experience which
awaits them at Nottingham Academy.
Teaching children to
differentiate fact
from fiction online
Karthik Krishnan, Global Chief Executive Officer of the
Encyclopaedia Britannica Group, highlights the challenge
that learners (plus teachers and parents) can face due to
unsubstantiated information on the Internet.
Igrew up using the beautifully
bound Encyclopaedia
Britannica books in the
library. Perhaps you did, too,
unless you were fortunate enough
to have aset at home. At the time,
this big row ofbooks was our
central source of knowledge.
With the advent of the Internet,
people switched from using
printed encyclopaedias to sourcing
information online because of the
ease of access.
However, while alot of
information on the Internet comes
from credible sources, sadly
ahuge portion of it doesn’t.
Examples of fake information on
the Internet include, “NASA runs
achild-slave colony on Mars!”,
and “photos taken by aChinese
orbiter reveal an alien settlement
on the moon!”
Unfortunately, current search
engine algorithms are not yet
advanced enough to differentiate
between plausible and credible
information. Anumber of people
are taking advantage of this
limitation and their understanding
of the search algorithms
to get their own biased or
unsubstantiated views to the top
of the search engine results page.
So where does this leave
parents and teachers, who
recognise the incredible value
of the learning content on the
Internet, but resist allowing
children uncontrolled access due
to the unreliable quality of the
information? It leaves them looking
for credible sources of information,
sources they can trust and don’t
have to doubt.
Yetfinding credible information
on the Internet has become an
ordeal. In our busy lives we all,
and especially children, tend to
stick to the first few results on the
search page and walk away with
‘an’ answer, even if it may not
be true; and it puts the future of
knowledge at risk.
For 250 years Britannica has
curated and provided trusted
information to the world and
helped knowledge evolution. As
abrand that deeply cares about
human progress, our mission is to
help people cut through the noise
and discover reliable information in
engaging ways; we all place ahigh
value on convenience.
The opening sentence on the
first page that Britannica published
in 1768 says, ‘UTILITY ought to
be the principal intention of every
publication. Wherever this intention
does not plainly appear, neither the
books nor their authors have the
smallest claim to the approbation
of mankind.’ This remains
imperative to meet the user’s
needs in today’s digital world, now
more than ever before. The media
we work in may have changed, but
our mission has not.
So how can we help
teachers, parents
and pupils to spot
fake news?
CHECK THE SOURCE
It might sound silly,but agood
starting point is to always check
the source.Thereare hundreds
of newspapers, magazines and
websites, and while many provide
legitimate information, some are
known to be unreliable. So, look at
what you’re reading, what the URL is
or who has quoted the information
–and don’t be afraid to second
guess it. Comparethe results to
other sources and makesurethe
information you’re using is reliable
and accurate.The moreyou do this,
the moreyou’ll get used to knowing
wheretogofor trusted content!
LOOK FORLESSON
PLANS AND ACTIVITIES
It’simportant to help students
acquiretheir ownskills and habits
of mind to separate fact from fiction.
One waytoencourage this is to look
for online tips, resources and lesson
ideas that will help them identify
anything rogue.For example,just
from aquicksearch you can find
lesson activities exploring ‘The five
‘W’sofwebsite evaluation’, quizzes
of real-life examples to test their
skills, and whitepapers and video
clips providing guidance on how
to makemoreinformed decisions
about news.
ASK THE EXPERTS
If time permits, whynot try
visiting the local libraryfor
further information or consider
downloading an app or extension
that automatically fact-checks and
verifies information for you? There
areplenty of fact-checking websites,
but one example is the ‘Britannica
Insights’ Chrome browser extension,
whichisafreedownload that will
automatically highlight trusted
sources and information at the topright
corner of asearch results page
on the web. This wayyou can feel
moreconfident in separating the
facts from the fiction!

Razzamataz -this is ME!
Aplace to be ME
One of the stand out films of the year
has to be The Greatest Showman, a
musical loosely based on the life of
PT Barnum and his circus.
It has been an overwhelming
hit with Razzamataz students with
many expressing that Razzamataz
is the place where they can really
be themselves and this in turn has
led them to grow in confidence and
self-belief.
Students take part in singing,
acting and dance classes and cover a
wide curriculum so they experience
both West End and Broadway musical
theatre as well as the commercial
genres of street dance, pop singing
and acting for camera. This creates
‘triple threat performers’ which is what
the industry now demands.
Whether students are taking part
for fun and fitness or they want to
make performing arts a career, Razz is
the place to be!
Students get lots of opportunities
to perform, have fun and make new
friends, build on their confidence and
social skills all while keeping fit and
active. Classes start at age 2and go
on to 18 and there are regular special
guest workshops and many other
opportunities such as performing in
Disneyland Paris and Indigo at the O2!
Polly Dunbar (Two Hoots Hb, £11.99)
Cat loves fish, he loves his family too, mainly because they
give him lots of fish. But lately something fishy is going on -
they seem to have forgotten his fish and produce odd things
instead like tiny clothes. At last they go off, probably fishing,
but what they bring is nothing like fish, in fact it is enough
to make cat leave home. What could induce him to return?
Can you guess? Atouching and very funny story about
coming to terms with anew arrival, full of expressive pictures that
add details to the simple story told in afew words.
Cyril and Pat -
The Accidental President S
Tom McLaughlin (Oxford, £6.99)
Being aclose friend of
Joe, the first child Prime
Minister, has its advantages
as Ajay knows. Despite
being given positions of
importance, he makes
mistakes, some of which
are nearly disastrous. As a
last chance, Ajay is sent to
America as the Ambassador
ready to welcome the new president when
he is chosen. Due to aseries of hilarious
misunderstandings Ajay actually becomes
the American president. He beats coffee
millionaire Hank Jones who is far from pleased
and, determined to get revenge, turns his
attention to taking over ‘Great England’. Will
Joe and Ajay come up with aplan to thwart
his ambitions, or will it all go horribly wrong?
There are plenty of laugh aloud moments in
this latest title in the ‘Accidental’ series. Some
pictures and fair size print encourages readers
onto medium length novels.
Debbie
Emily Gravett (Two Hoots Hb, £12.99)
Poor Cyril. As the only squirrel living in Lake Park he was lonely
and sad, until he met what he thought was another squirrel, Pat,
who became his new best friend. They spent all day inventing new
games and having lots of fun. All the other animals tried to tell Cyril
something, but he was too busy having fun to listen, until asmall
child pointed out what had been obvious to everyone else, Pat was arat and squirrels can’t
be friends with rats. Poor Cyril tried to play their games alone, but it wasn’t fun and put him in
great danger. If only Pat had been there to protect him... you will have to read this poignant
picture book to see what happens. It might make you think how you look at people and what is
important in afriendship. With just afew sentences on each page, the colourful pictures add to
the story, making it perfect for new readers and great to share.
the Hungry Bunny Horde
Frimplepants’ trip
to abrunch date
was cut short
when her monster
Dashing into her
secret cave, they
emerged as the Princess in
Black and her pony, Blackie, ready to
fight any monster, but all she found were
lots of cute bunnies. However, as their
numbers increased they didn’t seem so
cute especially when they started to eat
EVERYTHING in sight, even the Princess
herself was at risk. It seemed more than
brute strength might be needed to save
the day. Find out what happened in this
amusing adventure story. With large print
and lots of pictures it is aperfect bridge
from picture books to short novels.
Grandma Dangerous and the Dog of Destiny
Kita Mitchell (Orchard, £6.99)
Oliver doesn’t mind being left behind when his mum goes off
as he is left with his dangerous Grandma, not the boring one. As
usual, Grandma is full of surprises, the first one being the unusual
looking dog she arrives with that she definitely didn’t steal (despite
what the strange men say). Then she keeps Oliver off school and
announces they are off to Australia to search for his missing dad,
which (third surprise) is where his usually very cautious mum
really is. Perhaps the biggest surprise of all is their most unusual
mode of transport. The surprises, or should that be shocks, continue when they reach
Australia. Starting with their unexpected travelling companions and continuing with the
(over?) friendly hotel owner -isheall he seems? This is alaugh aloud adventure with
entertaining larger than life characters and enough plot twists to make you as giddy as
Oliver sometimes feels. Large print, medium length novel.
Star
Read
Will Mabbitt (Orion, £6.99)
Read It was an ordinary day when
Jake took ashort cut down
adark alley and was mistakenly handed a
parcel. Of course he had to take apeek inside.
The shock he got from the macabre contents
—and realisation he had just seen aghost —
was nothing compared to the one he’d get
when he discovered this act had sentenced
him to the Eternal Void and agrim reaper
was out to get him. Luckily he makes some spectral friends
who set out to help him avoid the inevitable, but it is arace
against time, with no guarantee of ahappy ending. This is a
very enjoyable first book in anew series with an entertaining
mix of spooky characters, gruesome deeds and very funny
moments. It is atotally absorbing full length novel.
Embassy of the Dead
The Boy at the Back of the Class
Onjali Q. Rauf (Orion £6.99)
Anew boy in class always creates interest.
Never talking or smiling and keeping apart
from the others, Ahmet causes more than
most. Asmall group of friends who set out
to befriend him learn he is arefugee who
has escaped from awar. Ashis English
improves, they find out more about him
and are shocked to hear what he and his
to help him and are horrified at the negative reactions he
gets from some people. Determined to help reunite his
family, they come up with adesperate plan that nearly
turns into adisaster, but raises awareness of their quest.
With the police, media and even royalty involved will there
be ahappy ending? This is an incredibly powerful story
that will really make you think about how you and others
react to anyone who is different. Seen through the eyes of
aclassmate you live every moment with them, completely
involved, sharing every emotion. Ariveting read with much
to discuss. Full length novel for older juniors.
Jungle Curse
S
Tamsin Cooke (Oxford £6.99)
If Finn is hoping his second film appearance as a
stunt double is going to be less traumatic than the
first, he’s going to be disappointed. Finding anew,
unpleasant member of the team is bad enough,
but the arrival of afurry monster, which no one
else seems to be able to see, is far worse. A
series of accidents, fairly harmless at first, cause
rumours that the film is cursed. As stunt after stunt goes
wrong the accidents become ever more dangerous until
potentially fatal. It seems Finn is the target, can he work
out what is going on and stop it before anyone actually dies
whilst dealing with shocking personal issues? This second in
the Stunt Double series loses none of the adrenalin fuelled
action of the first. It is aroller coaster ride of emotions for
Finn and the readers, full of drama to keep you gripped to
the very end. Full length novel.
What Manor of Murder?
Christopher William Hill (Orchard £6.99)
As usual, Horatio and Eustace Bleakley are off to
Bleakley Manor for the Michaelmas weekend celebrations
accompanied by their cousin Loveday and an orphan
called Oliver. Unlike the family members, Oliver finds
the blackness of the manor and the odd behaviour of
its inhabitants surprising and is slightly horrified by the legend
of Old Bramble Head who is supposed to claim avictim from the household
this time of year. What surprises the brothers is the new butler and hasty
disappearance of the old one. They are soon diverted by the discovery of a
body and arrival of asurly and seemingly incompetent police inspector. Being
keen crime busters, the brothers are determined to be the ones to find the
murderer, although it seems they may have been pipped to the post. This
inventive detective mystery has more than ahint ofthe macabre and enough
shocks to keep you guessing. Medium length novel for older juniors.
School open days:
What should you look out for?
If you have aprimary-aged child, you will probably be looking at
If you have an opportunity to speak
How were you welcomed when
you arrived? Was there someone
there togreet you and were they
warm and inviting? The strength
of welcome often tells you alot
about the culture ofthe school
and whether parents are actively
encouraged to be involved, or not.
Ask lots of questions
It might sound obvious, but make
sure you quiz the pupil or pupils
showing you around. Ask them
how they are assessed –aswell as
the subjects they enjoy and why.
Ask them what it’s really like at the
school and whether they feel happy,
secure and part of acommunity.
Bring your child with you
By doing so, you can gauge whether
the environment is one within which
your child will thrive. Fundamentally,
it’s about finding the right match for
your child and whether they get agood
‘feel’ for the place is really important.
Listen carefully to the Head’s
welcome speech
Is the school taking awhole-child
approach or is it just about academic
achievement? What does the
emphasis seem to be on? What
one family is looking for can be very
different to what another is –the
Head’s speech can tell you alot about
the culture and values of the school.
Take agood look at the staff
Good leadership is key, but it's
teachers who'll have the most dayto-day
impact on your child. Are
they warm and welcoming? Ask
questions and gauge the reaction.
Do they appear interested and
attentive? Do they engage with
your child or is all the conversation
directed towards you. Your child
should feel excited and inspired!
What else is offered?
What time does the school day start
and finish and what kind of activities
are included in the school day?
For many parents who have never
considered independent education,
they are pleasantly surprised
when they find out what is actually
included within the fees –especially
when before and after school clubs
and activities are factored in.
Visit again
Book aprivate visit. Be prepared
with any questions you didn’t have
the opportunity to ask at the open
event and spend some time looking
at as many areas of the school
as you can. If you haven’t seen it
before, ask to see the dining areas
and ask questions about the food!
Make anote of the deadlines
Independent schools do not have
specific deadlines in the same way
that they do in the state sector, but
there will almost certainly be key
dates you should make anote of.
