Always a Van Doren!!!
Hey Team,
This could probably be the shortest introduction I have ever written for the Vans
Magazine…
My heart only has on thing to say: THANK YOU!!!!!
At Vans, the months of July and August are crucial (being the first and third
important months of the whole year in terms of sales), and we all know that we
have had many opportunities in terms of products, mainly due to the fact that SAP
is still not working perfectly, to say the least.
I have seen many horror stories with my own eyes and through pictures.
Despite all these difficulties, you have delivered the results, both in monetary terms
and quality (our NPS maintained itself very close to 80%, which is amazing).
I am always and always have been very proud of the Vans family, but I must admit
that your attitude and resilience in this “shit storm” have been outstanding,
TRULY!!!
As we discussed (and practiced) as the last RLS, shit does happen, but it is how you
deal with it, which makes the BIG difference.
In a nutshell, and from the bottom of my heart, this is, by far, the best Family I have
ever had the chance to work with, and want to thank you personally, for your
ATTITUDE and every decision/gesture/action you have taken that has contributed
to the success of Vans, despite all the dramas that have taken place.
“Always a Van Doren, even in a shit storm”
Take care,
NEWCASTLE, AUGUST 18 th
HI Vans Family!
Below is a soft feedback about our END OF SUMMER event which I hope you will find useful:
the day was a success with some fantastic results. Our event ran from 13.00-17.00 where during
this time there was 20% discount throughout the store.
From 13.00 we had a team member at the entrance of our store notifying EVERY customer of the
discount and exclusions as well as beer, pizza and soft drinks. This was definitely key to the
increased sales and UPT during the whole event. By letting every customer know, it spurred them on
to make their purchase within the afternoon, even if they had just intended on browsing. Also
drawing attention to our event was the local band, Lone Wolf. They were set up in our right hand
side window and could be seen from outside. Live music was a fantastic way to raise some
awareness of the event to passers-by and also created an amazing atmosphere in store. Another
great addition to our event was a tattoo artist called James 'Big Red' Richardson from Northern
Glory tattoo studio in Newcastle City centre. During the event our customers had the chance to
have traditional style tattoo designs drawn onto their shoes for free. This was very well received
and Big Red was busy right into the last hour of trade even after the event had finished.
Sales target for the day was £3943, we finished on £5837 actual(+48%), +17.3% on the KPI report.
Saturday was the only day of week 20 we achieved target. This was an increase of 66% on the
previous Saturday 14/08 where £3521 was our actual money taken. The event gave us a substantial
increase in sales and had it been another normal Saturday, it would have very likely been similar to
14/08 where it was very quiet in store and not a massive amount of footfall on the street. We are
currently in Summer Holidays throughout England with just a week left. This has had a huge effect
on trade in general with many families abroad and all students have left Newcastle to go home for
the summer. From the first week in September schools will start their new term and students will
make their way back for a new year of studies. Luckily our event attracted a large number of
customers within the four hours it was on. This was definitely helped by the band and tattoo artist
in store and also some word of mouth throughout the afternoon from customers to their friends
and family who later paid us a visit.
We are certain given the chance to hold another event in the future, it would be even more
successful. We are exceptionally happy with how last Saturday went and are pleased that all of our
hard work and planning for the event paid off. The biggest factor to take away from last Saturday
would be the timing of the event and in future we would look to hold it when schools are running
and students are back in the city. This would absolutely maximize footfall to ensure sales were even
higher.
Kind regards,
Ash, Assistant Store Manager
The 2018 Vans BMX Pro Cup witnessed an incredible finish in Guadalajara, Mexico this past
weekend as the industry’s leading professional men and women BMX riders battled for their
last-chance at the podium before the series’ highly-anticipated World Championships finale.
For the third and final Pro Tour event, defending Vans Pro Cup Guadalajara event
winnerJason Watts triumphed yet again, surpassing his peers to mark his second
consecutive victory in Mexico since 2017.
Merging smooth style with his signature manuals and seamless tricks at the Montenegro
Skatepark, Watts remarked, “to win here again in Mexico feels absolutely amazing. I really
like riding this park and with a bit of luck on my side, I somehow pulled through.”
Returning to the podium for a second time this season, Sergio Layos’high speed riding and
unyielding style unlocked unique lines thatstunned the Montenegro crowd, including a
massive 360 transfer that earned him Best Line award and second-place. Australia’s Boyd
Hilder placed third, showcasing incredible technical consistency, andshaking up the overall
award and a hard-earned Vans BMX Pro Cup maiden victory. Women’s BMX legend and
USA riderNina Buitrago took second with a daring feeble grind bowl transfer, while
the Chilean rider Macarena Perez’s impressive tailwhip and high airs put her in third.
sheer excitement. “The fans are so passionate, they gave me an extra push to go faster
and higher because everyone gets so excited.”
The world title race continues, with pressure mounting on current Vans BMX Pro Cup
World Champion Larry Edgar and Spanish rider Teresa Azcoaga, who clinch the series
HEART & SOLE
.So, there it is…
In the middle of a shit storm (I don’t have to explain what our teams are currently
going through with the usual summer vacation business, new arrivals,
consolidations, SAP working not exactly smooth yet and 1/3 of my team leaving)
there’s the question I would like to share a Heart & Sole.
Sounds like a bad moment to ventilate romantic thoughts about our Brand,
but to me the timing for some reflection is perfect.
When we opened the Maastricht store 5 years ago, we had a crew of 8 guys (&
girls) ready to make it a success. In the mean time they’ve all moved to other
careers but one… My Supervisor Mamadou and I have had a “last-man-standing”
joke going on for the last 2 years, and now he will be leaving my team to become
ASM for Vans Antwerp Wijnegem (I’m SO proud of you brother!) it leaves me as
the only crew member that has been in our store from day 1.
Even in a shit storm a nice moment for reflection…
If I ever had the chance to talk to my 16-year-old me, I would tell myself that it
turns out to be possible to grow up, but stay rad as well. Something I really
believed to be absolutely impossible at that time. Back then I spent most of my
time (after school of course ;P ) hanging with my friends at the local skatepark, and
visiting as many pun rock shows as possible.
I never really became good at skating, as my absolute passion was playing loud &
fast music and I found out real fast that it absolutely sucks to go on tour with
bruised limps. However, to me Skateboarding and the music scene I was in always
have seemed very connected to me. I think it has a same energy, creativity and
sense of danger that attract people to both. I specifically remember once getting in
trouble with a local Vans dealer because I snuck by his store one night to steal the
Vans sticker off his window to put on my drumkit. Obviously the lady who lived
next door recognized the suspect as “that punk kid from down the block” and not
much later I had some explaining to do… To me those folks had no idea “what it
was all about”, and work was only something you did to support your other
activities. And “Hell No” that I would work for a huge company, nor be a salesman,
let alone a manager.

When I finished my studies I needed a job that offered a bit more security than
what I used to do and my girlfriend (now my wife) kind of pushed me into the
local skate store to apply for the open position they had at that moment. I wasn’t
too sure about it, as I had no experience, no sense (nor passion) for fashion and
didn’t consider myself “cool enough”. Thank God the DM that interviewed me
thought different and gave me a chance. It turned out that I really liked working
in retail, telling stories, making a mark. We used to sell several brands, and I’m
really not going to pretend that we’re the only brand that offers a nice product,
but what made Vans absolutely stand out for me was our Brand’s story, our
heritage, our sense of community. Vans wasn’t just one of the brands that
produces cool shoes. It always appealed to me that we don’t invest in expensive
commercials, but build a skatepark instead, have a Shop Riot or go on Warped
tour. So, even though I really had the best time working at that place, I didn’t
have to think a single second to apply when I found out Vans was opening a store
in my home town. Was I in need of a job? Not at all… Did I want to be part of this
family? FUCK YEAH!!!
Since joining the Vans Family I’ve found out that I wasn’t alone, and I can be
passionated about my career but still be that punk kid. As 7 Seconds sang:
“Young until I die!!!” And what a great ride it has been so far, I wouldn’t have
missed any of it.
Thank you all for sharing your energy, passion & creativity. We’re all Van Doren’s,
even in a shit storm!
