When I finished my studies I needed a job that offered a bit more security than
what I used to do and my girlfriend (now my wife) kind of pushed me into the
local skate store to apply for the open position they had at that moment. I wasn’t
too sure about it, as I had no experience, no sense (nor passion) for fashion and
didn’t consider myself “cool enough”. Thank God the DM that interviewed me
thought different and gave me a chance. It turned out that I really liked working
in retail, telling stories, making a mark. We used to sell several brands, and I’m
really not going to pretend that we’re the only brand that offers a nice product,
but what made Vans absolutely stand out for me was our Brand’s story, our
heritage, our sense of community. Vans wasn’t just one of the brands that
produces cool shoes. It always appealed to me that we don’t invest in expensive
commercials, but build a skatepark instead, have a Shop Riot or go on Warped
tour. So, even though I really had the best time working at that place, I didn’t
have to think a single second to apply when I found out Vans was opening a store
in my home town. Was I in need of a job? Not at all… Did I want to be part of this
family? FUCK YEAH!!!
Since joining the Vans Family I’ve found out that I wasn’t alone, and I can be
passionated about my career but still be that punk kid. As 7 Seconds sang:
“Young until I die!!!” And what a great ride it has been so far, I wouldn’t have
missed any of it.
Thank you all for sharing your energy, passion & creativity. We’re all Van Doren’s,
even in a shit storm!
