Life Cycles • Can identify the life cycles of familiar living things. • Understands that animals are at greater risk of harm at certain stages in a life cycle. • Identifies possible reasons for animals being threatened or endangered. Adaptations • Understands the meaning of adaptation. • Identifies leaves to suit a specific climate. • Describes food to best suit bird beak shapes. • Identifies animals and their adaptations. Investigating Weather • Develops an understanding of the different stages of the water cycle. • Describes the importance of weather information to community groups such as farmers. • Describes an experiment that measures rain and identifies possible improvements to the accuracy of the investigation. • Draws an anemometer and describes how it measures wind. Assessment - Indicators Below are the indicators taken fromthe assessment pages for each unit in Primary Science – Book D. These indicators can be transferred across to the assessment proforma on the accompanying page. By using proformas, teachers can meet the needs of outcome–based learning experiences in science. The format of each page is ideal for inclusion in student portfolios, or for reporting purposes. Using proformas allows teachers to provide a well explained, logically presented indication of progress to both students and parents. Indicators have been developed as a basis for determining progress towards achieving that outcome. Changes to the Local Environment • Recognises factors that create our environment. • Identifies that some influences on our environment can have negative and positive effects. • Compares the local environment to 50 years ago. • Describes changes to farming in the last century and the effect it has on the land. • Identifies ways to improve the condition of soil in the local area. Changing State • Identifies key words describing changes in the state of matter. • Lists examples of solids, liquids or gases. • Distinguishes between a solid, liquid and gas. • Describes how water changes when it is heated or frozen. Structures and Construction • Identifies rigid shapes. • Draws a rigid share made from a single sheet of paper. • Identifies rigid shapes made from paper. Magnets • Identifies differences in magnetic and non-magnetic materials. • Shows understanding of magnetic facts. • Draws ‘patterns’ to show understanding of magnetic poles. • Understands the correct terms ‘attract’ and ‘repel’. • Uses knowledge of magnets to solve a problem. Flight • Describes how a variety of flying machines move. • Describes an alteration made to improve the performance of a flying machine. • Evaluates that alteration’s success. • Discusses how extra weight affects the performance of a flying machine. Using the Assessment Proforma An explanation of how to use the proforma is outlined below. Fill in the appropriate learning area. For example : Earth and Beyond – Time ©R.I.C. Use this space to comment on an individual student’s performance which can not be indicated in the formal assessment, such as work habits or particular needs or abilities.
