Paper Gliders Flight – Activity 4 Lesson Focus Outcomes Energy and change 2.5 Describes properties of light, sound, heating and movement. Skills Focus • Follows a procedure • Observes • Records • Measures • Collects data • Predicts • Draws conclusions • Works cooperatively Background Information Paper planes fly differently depending on their shape. Long, thin designs are better for long, straight flights. Large wings slow down flight and cause the plane to ‘loop’. Flying objects all use the wind indirectly to fly, using the Bernoulli principle. Daniel Bernoulli was a Swiss scientist who discovered that as air flows horizontally, its vertical pressure decreases as its speed increases. This decrease in air pressure can lift objects from a paper plane or frisbee to a real plane. The light wings and tail help the glider to lift and float in the air when it is thrown. The paperclip gives it balance and keeps it going forward. Too little weight will make it tail heavy and too much weight will make it dive. Safety Warning Do not aim flying objects at any person. Always test flying objects in safe conditions and areas. Fly them away from people or windy conditions. Before the Lesson Materials Needed A4 sheets of paper, metre rulers, paperclips, tape Preparation • Have a paper glider already complete plus paper to work through the construction of gliders, piece by piece, with the students. • Find other glider models to show students. • Students will need a large area like a gymnasium or assembly area (preferably indoors without wind) to practise throwing their gliders. The Lesson Stimulus • Show examples of paper plane models and demonstrate how they perform. Discuss their differences. Allow the students time and paper to make their own designs and test them. This ‘free-play’ time will get rid of excess excitement related to the activity. What to Do • Guide students step by step to make their own glider. • Take the A4 sheet. The students can colour it now or after the plane has been made. • Fold it down the centre, then open it out. • Fold corners A and B until they meet the centre fold. • Fold C and D until they meet the centre fold. • Fold glider backwards in half along fold line, into the centre. • Fold down wings either side so A meets B. Then adjust the wings to be horizontal. Back view • The students write their names on it. • Test your glider with a partner or in small groups. Record your glider’s flight distance over three trials. Did the distance improve? • Does extra weight affect the glider? Add a paperclip to its nose and record its distance over three trials. • Discuss the variety of paper models shown at the beginning of the lesson. (Some with different shapes, wings, tail etc.). Demonstrate each again and leave for students to view. • Allow students time to think of ways to change their models (e.g. alter wings, tail, seal the body with tape). Have the students select one method and try it on their glider. • Test its performance and record what happens. Did it improve? What could be tried next? After the Lesson Answers Teacher check Additional Activities • Make three different-sized gliders (small, medium, large). Test their performance over several trials. Does size make a difference? Which travelled the greatest distance? Have students explain the results. • Using the same paper glider, change its weight by adding two, three or four paperclips to different positions on the plane. Observe and record the differences in performance. • From the students’ findings, have them design and construct their own glider. Hold a race to see which travels the greatest distance. Examine the winning plane to explain its performance. Display • Graph flight results on a large chart. Use paper streamers cut to lengths for a bar graph. 78 PRIMARY SCIENCE ~ R.I.C.
