items to declutter, then call or email the organization to make sure<br />
they are still in need of those items (needs change with the years<br />
and seasons). In some cases, the organizations may be able to<br />
pick up items at your home, but in most instances, they will want<br />
you to bring it over. Either way, get a receipt for the items - some<br />
donations may be tax deductible.<br />
WHERE TO LOOK<br />
When people think donations, their fi rst instinct is to turn to<br />
traditional charities like the Red Cross, Goodwill or the Salvation<br />
Army. These are all fi ne choices and will be glad to take your<br />
donation.<br />
But you should also consider some less-obvious choices when<br />
fi guring out where to donate items.<br />
HERE ARE A FEW:<br />
TOYS: The Toy Movement distributes toys and school supplies to<br />
children in troubled areas around the world<br />
BICYCLES: Bicycles for Humanity provide used bicycles to people<br />
in developing countries who rely on bikes for daily transportation,<br />
not just recreation.<br />
BOOKS: Your local public library may hold semi-annual book<br />
sales as a fundraiser. Local schools are also involved in that kind<br />
of activity. Make some phone calls and you may be surprised at<br />
the level of interest. Children’s books and young adult novels are<br />
highly desired.<br />
CLOTHING: Career Gear is a nonprofi t organization that distributes<br />
business clothing to disadvantaged men who are trying to reenter<br />
the workforce. Dress for Success is a women’s organization<br />
with a similar mission.<br />
COMPUTERS: Computers With Causes will attempt to refurbish<br />
your old computer and donate to needy causes. There are similar<br />
organizations for old smartphones.<br />
BABY ITEMS: Room to Grow targets impoverished families and<br />
supplies books, toys, baby clothes and more for kids up to age 3.<br />
SHOES: Soles 4 Souls is a disaster relief organization that provides<br />
shoes and other clothing items for people living in poverty or<br />
temporarily homeless. Gently worn items are welcome.<br />
MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS: The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation will<br />
fi nd a home for your no-longer-needed instruments to schools that<br />
need the items. dents attend prom at little or no cost by providing<br />
free dresses and tuxedos.<br />
EYEWEAR: VSP Global works to provide people around the world<br />
with affordable eyewear and eye care.<br />
These are just some of the hundreds of charities that are ready<br />
and eager to help you declutter and feel good about helping<br />
those in need. Most charities welcome your support in any season,<br />
so start diving into those closets and help make the world a better<br />
place. You’ll be glad you did and who knows - you may discover<br />
some treasured item that you’ve completely forgotten. ||||<br />
