items to declutter, then call or email the organization to make sure
they are still in need of those items (needs change with the years
and seasons). In some cases, the organizations may be able to
pick up items at your home, but in most instances, they will want
you to bring it over. Either way, get a receipt for the items - some
donations may be tax deductible.
WHERE TO LOOK
When people think donations, their fi rst instinct is to turn to
traditional charities like the Red Cross, Goodwill or the Salvation
Army. These are all fi ne choices and will be glad to take your
donation.
But you should also consider some less-obvious choices when
fi guring out where to donate items.
HERE ARE A FEW:
TOYS: The Toy Movement distributes toys and school supplies to
children in troubled areas around the world
BICYCLES: Bicycles for Humanity provide used bicycles to people
in developing countries who rely on bikes for daily transportation,
not just recreation.
BOOKS: Your local public library may hold semi-annual book
sales as a fundraiser. Local schools are also involved in that kind
of activity. Make some phone calls and you may be surprised at
the level of interest. Children’s books and young adult novels are
highly desired.
CLOTHING: Career Gear is a nonprofi t organization that distributes
business clothing to disadvantaged men who are trying to reenter
the workforce. Dress for Success is a women’s organization
with a similar mission.
COMPUTERS: Computers With Causes will attempt to refurbish
your old computer and donate to needy causes. There are similar
organizations for old smartphones.
BABY ITEMS: Room to Grow targets impoverished families and
supplies books, toys, baby clothes and more for kids up to age 3.
SHOES: Soles 4 Souls is a disaster relief organization that provides
shoes and other clothing items for people living in poverty or
temporarily homeless. Gently worn items are welcome.
MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS: The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation will
fi nd a home for your no-longer-needed instruments to schools that
need the items. dents attend prom at little or no cost by providing
free dresses and tuxedos.
EYEWEAR: VSP Global works to provide people around the world
with affordable eyewear and eye care.
These are just some of the hundreds of charities that are ready
and eager to help you declutter and feel good about helping
those in need. Most charities welcome your support in any season,
so start diving into those closets and help make the world a better
place. You’ll be glad you did and who knows - you may discover
some treasured item that you’ve completely forgotten. ||||
