Sept. 2 — A 1 p.m. Afternoon Salon explores how representations of the Buddha retained distinctive characteristics while adapting to the visual styles of the various cultures where Buddhism took hold. Sept. 8 — On Family Day, children ages 4 to 10 observe sculptures from South and Southeast Asia, take inspiration from them and create symbols like those in rock carvings or artboards from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 14 — In conjunction with the current exhibition Line & Color: The Nature of Ellsworth Kelly on view through Oct. 29, the 2007 documentary Ellsworth Kelly: Fragments screens at 5:30 p.m. It follows the artist as he revisits the Paris of his youth, uncovering early influences that became leitmotifs he would return to, reiterate and rework for decades. Sept. 29 — “A Night in Focus: India” from 5 to 7:30 p.m. explores the museum’s Indian art collection, as guests listen to music of the tabla, the tanpura and flute, and dancers recreate the poses depicted in Indian sculptures. Celebrating the Alex at 93 Sept. 2 — Glendale’s Alex Theatre and Glendale Arts celebrate the theater’s 93rd birthday from 6 to 9 p.m. with tours of the historic venue, specialty cocktails, food, an auction and other activities. Guests who donate $93 receive a limited edition Alex Theatre gift bag. Donations are not required to attend, and admission is free. However, reservations are required. CHINESE ROMANCE, AMERICAN TRAUMA AT THE HUNTINGTON Sept. 21 — A new work written and directed by playwright Stan Lai, Nightwalk in the Chinese Garden, opens at 7:30 p.m. The play, set against the backdrop of the garden, lake and pavilions at night, weaves together elements of the 16th-century Chinese romantic tragicomedy The Peony Pavilion with tales of early-20th-century California. Performed in English with some Peony Pavilion passages sung in Chinese, the work plays nightly, except Sundays, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. through Oct. 26. Tickets cost $95 to $150 ($85 to $140 for members). Sept. 22 — The Huntington unveils the technical process of art conservation in the exhibition Project Blue Boy, which opens today and runs through Sept. 30, 2019. The show spotlights the history, mysteries and artistic virtues of Thomas Gainsborough’s iconic 1770 painting, The Blue Boy (above), as it undergoes its first major conservation treatment since Henry E. Huntington acquired it in 1921. During the first three to four months of the exhibition, the public will be able to observe the senior conservator working on the painting in a satellite space inside the Thornton Portrait Gallery. It will then go off view for several months for structural work, after which it will return to the gallery. The show runs through Sept. 30, 2019. Sept. 26 — Gary Gallagher, University of Virginia professor of history emeritus, lectures on “Our Civil War: How Americans Understand the Great American Conflict” at 7:30 p.m. He explores how popular and academic understandings of the Civil War align with, or depart from, the reality of the conflict. Neighbors Clash in Playhouse Comedy Sept. 5 — Native Gardens, a new comedy directed by Seinfeld’s Jason Alexander (above), opens at 8 p.m. at the Pasadena Playhouse and runs through Sept. 30. The play by Karen Zacarías, starring Bruce Davison and Francis Fisher, explores how horticulture can turn well-intentioned neighbors into feuding enemies. A rising attorney and his pregnant wife have just purchased a home next to neighbors Frank and Virginia, a well-established Washington, D.C., couple with a superb English garden. At first the new couple is welcomed, but a barbecue and a disagreement over a fence line escalate into an all-out, comedic border war. Native Gardens continues at 8 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; 2 and 8 p.m. Saturdays; and 2 and 7 p.m. Sundays, with additional performances at 8 p.m. Tuesdays, on Sept. 11 and 25. Pulitzer Winner at Sierra Madre Playhouse Sept. 8 — The Sierra Madre Playhouse opens the Pulitzer Prize–winning classic The Gin Game, at 8 p.m. The Donald L. Coburn play tells the story of nursing home resident Weller Martin, who is desperately trying to retain some control over his life. He battles with fellow resident Fonsia Dorsey in a game of gin, as she serves as a symbol of all that has gone wrong, in a conflict not only with her but with divine will itself. Christian Lebano directs. The Gin Game continues at 8 p.m. Fridays, 2:30 and 8 p.m. Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays through Oct. 6. Tickets cost $40, $36 for seniors and $25 for youth 22 and younger. Museum Explores Asian Textiles’ Roles Sept. 14 — The USC Pacific Asia Museum unveils its fall exhibition, Ceremonies and Celebrations: Textile Treasures from the USC Pacific Asia Museum Collection, on view through Jan. 6. The show explores select examples across Asia, some rarely exhibited, highlighting ideas connecting the continent’s vast regions. Ceremonies and Celebrations is divided into four thematic sections: gender, status, religion and ceremony, exploring the ways these themes are reflected in textile art. THE LIST TASTING PASADENA Sept. 13 — The Pasadena Chamber of Commerce hosts the annual Taste of Pasadena from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Rose Bowl. Sample food and drink from some of Pasadena’s top restaurants. Attendees can also sample the four finalist cocktails in the SIP-tember Cocktail Bracket Challenge and vote for Pasadena Cocktail of the Year. Live music by Dance Syndicate is included. Night at the Derby Supports Five Acres Sept. 17 — Five Acres hosts its annual 18-hole golf classic and dinner, “A Night at the Derby,” at the Oakmont Country Club in Glendale. Golfers and nongolfers can enjoy a Kentucky Derby– themed dinner, live bluegrass music, an auction and contests for best hat and best bow tie. Golfing starts at 11 a.m.; the Bluegrass Bar opens at 5 p.m.; dinner, auction and awards ceremony start at 6:30 p.m. and dancing starts at 8 p.m. Individual golfing tickets and dinner are $695 and dinner-only tickets are $150. Sept. 22 — The Pasadena Symphony and Pops Moonlight Sonata Gala starts at 5:30 p.m. at Pasadena City Hall Centennial Square. The benefit honors Distinct Luminaries Seyfarth Shaw LLP and Barbara Mann Steinwedell for their support in an evening that includes libations and hors d’oeuvres, silent and live auctions, dinner, an awards presentation and dancing under the stars to live music.
