“Beyond the
Dressing Room”
Welcome back for my fourth instalment of “Beyond the Dressing Room”.
Teamwork as we all know is the key to success in most realms of life and
business, where we combine complimentary points of view to respond and
achieve a pathway that’s got the ability to overcome challenges and shape our
responses.
Teamwork however is a challenge in itself, people have to overcome their own
ego’s, communicate effectively, resolve conflict and above all else commit to
one another for the common goal. It’s interesting that over the last few seasons
lads have come and gone from the squad of players. Some a surprise and
some not so because you felt they understood the basis of the team and its
goals. To see the camaraderie in the squad at the moment is impressive and
exciting and gets me thinking what stages a team has to go through in order to
be one, a functioning unit, a close-knit group.
Backstage the group of committee/volunteers in the main remain the same and
therefore with the exception of newcomers have gelled and got used to each
other’s likes/dislikes and communication styles and now the club effectively runs
like clockwork. Everyone knows their roles utilising their best attributes and skillsets
to contribute to club. We can only hope that our first team move through the
stages and get to the same familiar and comfortable position for the good of the
team and club.
The best teamwork is a group of people working together for the greater good of
the team, meaning each person is willing to forgo their ego, and make decisions
that are truly in the best interest of the team. This requires a heightened
awareness of self and others. The most successful teams think Olympic teams
or the best football teams. Each player shows up to play and perform at their
absolute best, energised, engaged and committed to the bigger team goal. We
have all seen it when a great player turns up with their own agenda and just
focus their attention on their own performance, play selfishly or change the style
of play it brings down the whole team. It effects results and then my thoughts
always turn towards supporters those who pay to watch and the value for
money they are getting let alone those working countless hours to keep the club
going.
To me these people’s voices matter and I get insanely upset about lack of effort
or communication far more than a poor referee or a dubious result in a
game we were unlucky in and I know lots of others do also. 16
