Mission Possible
A Quarterly Community Relations Report
FALL 2018
Since our beginnings in 1961, Mission Fed has been dedicated to strengthening and improving the communities in which
we live, work and play. Through partnerships with schools and over 200 nonprofit organizations directly committed to a
healthier, stronger, vibrant and resilient San Diego County, we’re on a mission to ensure that San Diego’s success is our
bottom line. We hope you take pride in reading about our collaborative achievements and learn more about how we
came together to drive positive transformation throughout the San Diego community.
Hidden Treasures for the Community
This past June, Mission Fed was excited to debut Mission Hearts in the
Community, a campaign that solidifies Mission Fed’s dedication to giving
back to local nonprofits and schools. On the last Friday of the San Diego
County Fair’s School Staff Appreciation Days, multiple “Mission Fed
Hearts” were hidden throughout the fairgrounds, each heart worth a $100
donation to any San Diego County-based nonprofit or school to be
designated by the lucky person who found a heart. Six lucky winners
designated proceeds to the following schools and nonprofits: Kavod Charter
School, Miramar Ranch Elementary School (x2), The Seany Foundation,
Wind and Sea Surf Club and Maryland Elementary School. Be on the
lookout for “Mission Fed Hearts in the Community” later this year.
Investing in Students’ Futures
Our community is fortunate to have organizations that make
measureable impacts on the next generation of San Diego’s
leaders. One example is Junior Achievement of San Diego County
(JA), an organization that teaches kids how to get a job, start a
business and manage money. Recently, Mission Fed partnered with
JA to pilot a new initiative: “JA Way to Save.” The pilot program
encourages Mission Fed JA Finance Park graduates to continue
their journey of making smart financial choices and successfully
managing their money by opening a Savings or Checking Account.
Thanks to Mission Fed’s financial support generated from this pilot
program, over 115 students will be able to take advantage of
experiencing JA’s life-changing programs.
Children’s Well-Being through the Summer
Although summer should be a fun, carefree and exciting time for all kids, for too
many San Diego children, the end of the school year can sadly also mean hunger.
To help ensure that children do not have to worry about their next summer meal,
Mission Fed served as a sponsor of the San Diego Unified School District’s
“Summer Fun Café” meal program and marked its kickoff with a BBQ event at
Skyline Hills Park & Rec in Southeast San Diego. The Summer Fun Café bridges
the summer hunger gap and lets our students know that the community cares
about their well-being by providing fresh, tasty lunches and snacks for children.
From June through August, 58 locations throughout San Diego County operated
Summer Fun Cafés, where parents and guardians also ate for free thanks to
Mission Fed’s support. A well-nourished San Diego child is a happier and
healthier child.
Your success is our bottom line.

Sustainability
Champion Along
San Diego Bay
“America’s Favorite Pastime” for “America’s Finest” Youth
(L-R): Mission Fed’s Kyle Means, USR, Carmel Mountain, Cindy Sandback,
Senior Regional Business Development Officer, Cathy Stoll, Marketing &
Community Relations Specialist, Sara Hernandez, AVP, Collections Manager,
and guest Alicia are joined by the Padres Friar.
Mission Fed joined the San Diego Padres, their Pad Squad
and over 550 kids and their families at Opening Day for the
San Diego Padres Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities
(RBI)! Held at the Jackie Robinson YMCA, the event was
sponsored by Mission Fed for the third year in a row. RBI is
a Major League Baseball youth outreach program designed
to: increase participation and interest in baseball and softball
among underserved youth; encourage academic participation
and achievement; increase the number of talented athletes
prepared to play in college and minor leagues; promote
greater inclusion of minorities into the mainstream of the
game; and teach the value of teamwork. We’re honored to
be able to provide our region’s youth the opportunity to
play ball and acquire successful life skills along the way.
CELEBRATING THE VIPS IN EDUCATION
Mission Fed’s Ericka Beltran, Assistant Branch
Manager, National City, Sally Preston, Branch
Manager, Little Italy, and Sam Cardoso, Branch
Manager, Terra Nova and guest.
Thanks to the generous support
of partners throughout San Diego,
including Mission Fed, the 9th annual
Farm to Bay celebration was
a resounding success. The event’s
proceeds support The Living Coast
Discovery Center’s wildlife, education
and sustainability programs and inspire
San Diegans to connect with coastal
animals, plants and habitats native
to our region. Congrats also to the
Living Coast for officially making
Farm to Bay a Zero Waste event,
meaning that over 90% of event
waste was diverted from the landfill.
Way to champion sustainability!
Everyone who has a role in the education of the next
generation is a VIP in our book! As part of School
Staff Appreciation Days, Mission Fed recognized
the inspirational and passionate work by those in our
community’s educational field with a free day at the
San Diego County Fair. All Mission Fed branches offered
San Diego County teachers and staff of public or private
schools, district offices, colleges and universities four free
admission tickets to the San Diego County Fair to use on
School Staff Appreciation Days. It’s important for us to
reward those who dedicate their lives to education and
we hope this year’s offer provided a fun time at the fair.
Growing into Healthy and Successful Adults
Mission Fed was honored to sponsor the Promises2Kids Guardian
Scholars Awards Reception on July 26. Guardian Scholars Education
encourages foster youth to pursue higher education through community
college, trade school or a university degree. Promises2Kids annually
provides over 3,300 current and former foster youth in San Diego
County with the tools, opportunities and guidance they need to address
the circumstances that brought them into foster care, overcome the
difficulties of their past and grow into healthy and successful adults.
We’re happy to be part of this program that supports our youth and
future leaders and we look forward to seeing the positive impact that
these Guardian Scholars will make throughout the community!
(L-R): Mission Fed’s Enrique Meza, Community Relations Officer,
and Cathy Stoll, Marketing & Community Relations Specialist,
kick off School Staff Appreciation Days.
(L-R): Mission Fed’s Francisco Vargas, Senior Financial Services
Representative, and Ogy Mustur, Linda Vista Branch Manager.
Branch Spotlight: Linda Vista
With 31 branches serving nearly 235,000 members all over San Diego County, Mission Fed and our employees make
meaningful connections throughout the community. It’s these Mission Fed Moments which remind us that “your
success is our bottom line” is not just a tagline, but a daily goal. One Mission Fed Moment comes to us from the
Linda Vista Branch Manager Ognjen “Ogy” Mustur. Two years ago while participating in the Mission 2 $AVE
program, Matty met Ogy and his Linda Vista Branch Team. At that time, Matty was in transitional kindergarten
at Bay Park Elementary. Since then, Matty and his grandmother became friends with the branch staff and stop by
to provide updates on Matty’s entrepreneurial spirit. Matty recently started his own business creating tie-dye
T-shirts and as a token of appreciation, he gave his first to Ogy! On behalf of Ogy, his team and over 540 team
members, Mission Fed applauds Matty and his grandmother’s efforts and thanks them for the heartwarming gift.
FALL 2018
SPOTLIGHT ON COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Marching with Pride
As Mission Fed’s push for diversity, inclusion and equal opportunity
continues, we were proud to join San Diegans in showing solidarity
for and support of the LGBTQ community. On July 14, Mission Fed
employees, their friends, partners and families, and over 300,000
attendees were a part of the Pride Parade. As one of the largest
events in Southern California, this year’s Pride Parade, themed
“Persist With Pride,” marked its 44th year. Mission Fed’s volunteers walked the parade route handing out
Mission Fed pride bandanas and rode on the festive float with our friends from local radio station Z90.
Building Communities of Hope
Each year, San Diego Habitat for Humanity (SDHFH) brings
people together to build homes, communities and hope. Since
1988, SDHFH has built over 200 homes throughout San Diego
County, serving 900 men, women and children, with the support of
nearly 200,000 volunteers and generous corporate and government
partners. Mission Fed’s employees and their families were excited
to partner with SDHFH on a new construction project in El Cajon on May 19 where volunteers planted
flowers, constructed walls and helped build the framing for homes. Mission Fed encourages our community
to volunteer with SDHFH and support their belief that every man, woman and child should have a simple,
decent and affordable home so that they can live in dignity and safety.
Restoring Beaches and Protecting Wildlife
San Diego is known for its pristine coastline and miles of beautiful
beaches. In hopes of preserving both our beaches and marine wildlife
Mission Fed joined over 200 volunteers for a beach cleanup in
collaboration with ALT949 and the San Diego County Chapter
of Surfrider Foundation. Taking place on Oceanside’s white
sandy beach, volunteers collected bottle caps, cigarette butts, plastic
straws and other small items that marine animals often mistake for
food. Mission Fed is proud to be a part of cleanup efforts that
protect and restore these environments and coastal parks for
not only their natural inhabitants, but for all to enjoy.
Latinas Pave
the Way
Fanny Miller, President & CEO of El Latino
San Diego, welcomes attendees.
The largest Spanish women’s
conference in the United States,
Celebrando Latinas (Celebrating
Latinas) brought together
extraordinary Latina women
to the Hilton Bayfront, and
Mission Fed was right at the
center of the empowering event.
The theme for this year’s conference
was “Vive tus Sueños”
(Live your Dreams), and
the event offered motivational and
educational workshops on subjects
like business, health, beauty, legal
issues, personal development and
family. Mission Fed was thrilled
to have been a part of the day’s
activities, where more than 1,000
attendees were provided vital
information and quality resources
to enhance their well-being and
long-term health.
The Lifeblood of Our Community
As part of Mission Fed’s goal to model and inspire
wellness for ourselves, our teams and our organization,
our Wellness Committee partnered with the
San Diego Blood Bank to host a blood drive on
May 22. Mission Fed’s Corporate Office in Sorrento
Mesa served as the site for the mobile Blood Bank
team and employees and local businesses stopped by
to donate blood and learn about the vital role that the
San Diego Blood Bank plays throughout Southern
California. The 28 units collected will touch the lives
of at least 84 people.
As the safety net for our regional blood needs, each year
the San Diego Blood Bank provides more than 120,000
units of blood to patients of all ages, socio-economic levels
and ethnic backgrounds throughout San Diego County.

Teaching on a MAXimum Level!
Supporting of our schools and teachers has helped
Mission Fed promote improvement in teaching and learning,
a mission that’s been with us since our start using a borrowed
desk at the San Diego County Office of Education. During
the school year, in partnership with 105.7 MAX FM,
Mission Fed’s MAX Out My Class recognizes the
dedication and passion that teachers devote to their students’
future. Every week, the radio station’s crew and Mission Fed
visit a school to award a classroom a $200 gift card, and an
on-air interview focused on the teacher and their students.
Thanks to a donation from Computers 2 SD Kids, some
schools are also lucky recipients of netbooks! Congratulations
to all the winning teachers for their dedication to providing the
educational foundation for our future San Diego community
leaders. To nominate a local teacher, submit your entry via
email to monica.ventura@sdcoe.net.
Mission Fed’s Terri Miracle, VP Creative and
Communications, and The San Diego Council
on Literacy’s Dr. Nora L. Kenney, Board Chair.
Mission Fed believes literacy is critical
to economic development as well as
individual and community well-being.
It’s why we support organizations
like the San Diego Council on
Literacy and their Eat. Drink.
Read., a culinary event with a twist
for literacy! In addition to savory and
sweet samples created by the most
popular chefs from every corner of
San Diego County, the twist is that
chefs contribute to the San Diego
Council on Literacy’s cause by creating
a dish inspired by their favorite book or
literary characters. More than 179,000
San Diego County residents of all ages
receive services through the 27 affiliated
programs of the San Diego Council
on Literacy each year. The Council’s
goal is to raise funds to provide books,
services and resources for low-income
and literacy-challenged families in
San Diego County.
Insured
by NCUA.
Mission Driven All-Stars in the Community
As a highlight to the San Diego Padres season, Mission Fed recognizes nonprofit
partners who strive to make our region “America’s Kindest City.” Our check
award ceremonies not only provide nonprofits with financial support, but also
allow their staff and supporters to enjoy a Padres game on us. Recently,
we had the pleasure of recognizing two such organizations: ElderHelp
of San Diego and Burrito Boyz. Donations provided to ElderHelp of
San Diego supported social services that help seniors live independently in
their own homes; and our donation to Burrito Boyz helped nourish the
homeless in San Diego County by providing hot food, dignity and comfort.
Your success is our bottom line.
Waving Goodbye to the School Year
As another traditional school year came to an end last spring,
multiple schools sent their students off to enjoy the summer
vacation. To reward middle and high school students for a job
well done, Mission Fed partnered with KSON on a fun contest:
“Say Goodbye to the School Year and Hello to Aquatica!”
The contest that encouraged classrooms to upload pictures of
their “waves,” ran from April through May, and gave tickets to
Aquatica waterpark for winning classrooms. A total of three
winning classrooms were selected and Mission Fed, together with
KSON, awarded the free passes to St. Michael’s School in Poway,
Grossmont High School in El Cajon and Bonita High School in
Chula Vista.
