frankfortstation.com life & arts the frankfort station | September 20, 2018 | 23 LWE grad takes the stage in ‘On Golden Pond’ Frankfort resident handles props for Curtain Call Theatre production T.J. Kremer III Contributing Editor Those of a certain generation will fondly recall watching on the silver screen the touching performances of Henry Fonda, Jane Fonda and Katharine Hepburn in “On Golden Pond.” The film, which was to be Henry Fonda’s last, was nominated for 10 Oscars and won three, including Best Actor (Henry Fonda), Best Actress (Hepburn) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Ernest Thompson). Flash forward nearly 40 years and Curtain Call Theatre is preparing to produce on stage its version of the classic film. Joshua Reid, a Lincoln- Way East grad who’s making his third appearance at Curtain Call, plays the role of Bill, the fiancé of Norman and Ethel Thayer’s estranged daughter, Chelsea. “I’m really excited about this production. ‘On Golden Pond’ is a great story,” Reid said. “We have a fantastic cast, smaller than our last performance, ‘12 Angry Jurors.’ It’s a little more of a intimate cast. But, it tells a really deep, personal story that I think a lot of people can connect with on a familial level. It deals with family and loss and love and just how you balance all that when you try to move forward with your life.” Making his Curtain Call debut is 15-year-old Aidan McGuire, of Mokena. Despite his young age, Mc- Guire has been in a number of productions with other Lincoln-Way East graduate Joshua Reid (right, seated) and Aidan McGuire (right, standing), of Mokena, rehearse a scene from ‘On Golden Pond’ with Pete Simon (seated, left) and Renata Allelujka at Curtain Call Theatre on Thursday, Aug. 30. T.J. Kremer III/22nd Century Media acting troupes and said he’s anxious to get a chance to perform with his hometown theater group. “I started acting at about age 9, just all throughout the south suburbs,” McGuire said. “A lot of youth plays and stuff like that. It’s really cool to be part of [Curtain Call Theatre] and start working with a wide range of age groups and being in a community show and really enjoying getting connected with the whole cast. It’s really cool.” The duo represent part of the inter-generational theme of the play, as the story revolves around an aging couple’s yearly visit to their New England cabin, but the routine is thrown off when their estranged daughter, Chelsea, shows up with Bill and Billy, only to leave Billy behind as Chelsea and Bill head off to vacation in Europe. “I enjoy doing plays that have a little bit more meaning,” McGuire said. “It just opens up a good chance for conversation… it’s a good experience. I like that.” Donna White, the production’s prop designer and a Frankfort resident, said audience members could expect to see “lots of props in this one.” “It’s just the little details that we’re trying to — they may not be used, but it’s a visual,” she said. “It’s the pictures that are just randomly around and the candles or knick knacks. Lots and lots of knick knacks.” White said she often goes downstairs to take inventory — and then heads straight to her house to see if she can find any additional props to use there. “I’ll pull things from my house, and every once in awhile I’ll have to put out a 9-1-1, I’m looking for something specific I can’t find or can’t find at Goodwill or anywhere else,” she said. “We put a lot of feelers out from time to time … Some things are timeless, other things you have to really hunt for.” Working with director Jaimey Kennedy has been a collaboration, she added. “We all work together as far as how the set’s going to look, make it look as to period as we possibly can,” she said. June Graffy, co-producer and assistant executive director of the Curtain Call Theatre Board of Directors, said the theater group members go out of their way to make sure new Curtain Call actors feel welcome on set. “That’s very easy: We are a very no-drama theater group, and we are very welcoming and inviting,” she said. “Even on the very first day when we all got together to do the first readthrough, Kennedy spoke, as well as myself, and both of us are Curtain Call — people find it as a family, and that’s exactly what we are: We are a no-drama type theater group. It’s just really been nice. If we see anything starting, we nip it in the bud right away to not let it be, so that way everybody does have a great experience and does want to come back.” “On Golden Pond” is set to debut at Curtain Call Theatre, 11112 Front St., in Mokena, with 7:30 p.m. shows on Sept. 27-28; a 2 p.m. show on Sept. 30; 7:30 p.m. shows again on Oct. 5-6; and a 2 p.m. show Oct. 7.
