HOEDOWN
From Page 5
nice to have those resources
close,” Hoffman said.
The effects of cancer are
wide-reaching, with nearly
everyone being touched by
the disease in one way or
another.
Jane Ryan, of Oak Forest,
has seen the devastating
effects firsthand more
than once. Ryan was by her
daughter’s side as she battled
papillary cell thyroid cancer.
Her daughter couldn’t attend
the Hoedown but is living
a happy and cancer-free
life with her new husband
in Wisconsin, even recently
celebrating her 50th birthday.
While Ryan’s daughter
didn’t personally use the
services offered by The Cancer
Support Center or Camp
Quality, Ryan said The Cancer
Support Center is an incredible
tool for patients that
go beyond treatment, including
one of Ryan’s friends
from line dancing.
“This is a wonderful celebration,”
Ryan said. “One
of the ladies I line dance
with is a cancer survivor too,
and she brought a bunch of
us here. This is an amazing
event – it’s a shame it’s coming
to an end.”
As Rachel Glim of the
Bernie Glim Country Roads
sang “Somewhere Over the
Rainbow,” the stars above
were obscured with balloons.
On each balloon, a
message written to a loved
one; some to honor the victory
of beating cancer, others
of remembrance for those
who lost.
As the balloons soared
upward, the somber sky suddenly
became full of life
again. A stunning firework
show illuminated the sky,
illuminating the balloons as
they voyaged through the
night. The pyrotechnic display
was a fitting conclusion
for the final Hometown Hoedown.
“We wanted to go out with
a boom,” Kahlhammer said.
