FROM THE CHAIR Sweet Dreams The incoming chair of the CICM, Pete Whitmore FCICM, urges members to dream big. Pete Whitmore FCICM I never imagined I would ever be lucky enough to become Chair of our wonderful Institute. So, I thought I would use my first column to tell you a little bit about myself. When I was six or seven, I wanted to become a professional footballer. And to be perfectly honest, it is still my aspiration as a 51 year-old; a little part of me still believes I could make it. In my teens, reality set in and I was crystal clear that I was going to be a history teacher; that didn’t happen either for various reasons. I suppose what I’m trying to say is that I didn’t start out yearning to be a credit professional, but somewhere along the line I caught the credit bug. I’m not suggesting that we will convince a seven year-old to want to work in credit (and I wouldn’t want to anyway, that’s the time for having fun just being a kid; my wife often reminds me today that I am still a big kid at heart.) But maybe we can make some inroads to the teen scene, and that is certainly where we are going with our secondary school and university education initiatives. Anyway, whilst working for an insurance company, I was lucky enough to be given an opportunity to project manage a cash management department and shortly after that a credit management team of around 90 credit controllers. It was during that time that the credit bug really started to get me (the buzz of collecting those funds you thought you may lose and hitting those targets that had seemed unachievable at the outset) and I was fortunate to work with and learn from some experienced credit professionals (the sort of thing you could gain nowadays by joining our Mentor Hub program – it is a fabulous concept). I then moved to an IT distributor, but on the other side of the table managing a European accounts payable team. I have to say that it provided me with some valuable insight that would prove to be very beneficial when a few years later I re-entered credit. Fast forward a further decade and a half, things changed dramatically for me and the support from the CICM and my professional credit network led me into the world of self-employment, where I stayed for a short-time before starting my current role, EMEA Credit Risk Manager. People who know me will tell you that I like to run a little bit; okay, I like to run a lot. I have met so many supportive runners from the everyday runner to the elite Olympian and every single one encourages you irrespective of your shape, size or ability. I find exactly the same type of camaraderie within the credit profession and that is why I am so grateful to have the opportunity to serve the members of CICM. So, fellow credit professionals, I guess my first message is to dream big. You never know what might happen! The Recognised Standard / www.cicm.com / October 2018 / PAGE 12
