Armed Services
During the Great War the men of Horwich
proudly served in all three strands of the
armed services, predominately within the
Army. The list opposite illustrates the breadth
of regiments they joined from across the
United Kingdom and as far away as some
Commonwealth Countries.
After joining the Armed Forces, our boys
where not only taken over to France, but
to other conflicts around the globe. Some
of these engagements are reflected in the
names of their last resting place, such as the
‘Basra Memorial’ in Iraq. A place that would
have been unheard of by many of the soldiers
and their families back in 1914. Sadly, in the
21st Century the name Basra again became
synonymous with two new wars in the Gulf
for another generation of soldiers and their
families.
