Redcliffs School

the way the school
is working to stay
connected to its
community
ON THE cusp of
our Redcliffs School
production opening,
where great excitement is
building, it seems fitting
to just pause and reflect
on the great spirit of our
incredible community.
For over seven years
Redcliffs School has been
dislocated from our local
community and as such we
are always on the lookout
for ways that we can bring
our children and families
together to just ‘be’ a
community.
Our school production
is one such way.
The production of Annie
is the fourth time that we
have asked Sumner School
to give up their hall facility
for two weeks so that
we can bring our school
together to sing, dance, act
and celebrate the fact that
our school is alive
and well, thriving and
still doing great things
in our home away from
home.
Our sincere and heartfelt
thanks to our neighbours
at Sumner School for their
generosity, understanding
and showing the strength
of community as we all
look after each other in
the best interests of our
precious akonga – our
children.
You rock Sumner
School.

Latham’s stand on
issues with the city
council’s high flood
management policies.

I SUPPORTED Darrell
Latham on his stand.
I have also been pushing
for change on Decision 53
in the District Plan, as I
have spoken to one of the
commissioners who was
on the panel.
They said that it was very
clear in their decision that
they wanted to grant relief
by way of the residential
overlay.
This would ensure
owners of residentially
zoned land that they
could build a residential
dwelling subject to the
RDA, relevant restricted
discretionary activity and
this was to be done on a
non-notified basis.
The RDA rule was
included in the plan,
however, the policy has
been omitted and in the
absence of the policy, staff
seem to think they have
no legal basis to apply the
RDA rule.

There are experts who
can apparently calculate
the trajectory of rolling
rocks with uncanny
accuracy.
The Bridle Path and
Major Hornbrook Track
both have signs warning us
of falling rocks, but remain
open.
Mt Pleasant Bluffs track,
Chalmers Track and
Morgan’s Valley tracks also
have the same warnings,
but are closed.
After the 2010
earthquake we breathed
a sigh of relief because
nobody was killed and we
were told it was a once in
5000-year event.
A few short months later
185 people were killed
including Messrs Wright
and Foldesi, but that was a
once in 25,000-year event,
so the experts were still
right.
I wonder if the
statisticians who assess the
risk of physical injury from
falling rocks consider the
mental damage their red
stickers and prohibition
notices do to people who
are just trying to live their
lives?
We each have to consider
the risk of crossing the
road or jumping out of an
aeroplane before we do
it. Can’t we be trusted to
assess our own risk and act
as we choose?
We do not need any
more people telling us
what not to do. The
establishment of the
memorial garden is a great
idea. We should just do it.
