MD's Message
Dear Friends,
We as an individual always set some goals for ourselves
and try to select the right way to achieve them effectively
and ef iciently. To move ahead in the right direction, it is
important to follow a role model. This helps us to
concentrate and be focussed.
“Mahatma Gandhi” has been a great inspiration for many
of us in our lives. His teachings have always in luenced us
to be a responsible individual socially and have helped us
understand how we can give back to the society.
There is perhaps no other person in history who portrays the principles of non-violence, civil
resistance and enormous love and respect for mankind better than Mahatma Gandhi. The way he
led the nation to achieve independence was something that no other person would have
imagined.
Some of the greatest teachings of Mahatma Gandhi that we as an organisation can relate to are
having belief in peace, harmony, love and respect for each other. Our core values also focus on the
same.
We as individual, at some point always want to adopt his teachings and want our future
generations to follow the path of compassion shown by him. He possessed a great vision. He
always believed in challenging his own self-discipline and commitments to accomplish his goals.
Which was the reason, he was able to win the hearts of the entire nation and people across the
world. Today the entire world looks up to him as a role model.
In order to stay committed to our work and for achievement of goals, we must follow his example.
If we are determined to be truthful to ourselves, these principals can help us become a better
person. Let us inculcate his principals and discipline within us in such a way that we become
more respectful and thoughtful towards each other, become better team players and also learn to
respect and care for our society and environment.

Health Talk @ Ahmedabad
Health Talk session was organised by wellness committee at
Ahmedabad on 21st August 2018.
The main topic discussed were “ENT Problems (Prevention &
Cure). Dr. Hardik Shah, consultant –ENT, Shalby Hospital,
Ahmedabad shared the insight on the topic.
Dr. Gaurangi Shah-M.D.,Wellness consultant from Shalby Hospital,
Ahmedabad discussed the 'Importance of investigations with details and intervals'.
Hospitality Training for Guest House Canteen Staff @ Sutrapada
GHCL Soda Ash Division, for the very irst time, organized a
training session for staffs at the Guest House situated in Sanjay
Nagar at Sutrapada from 13th to 15th September 2018.
The main objective for organizing the training session was to
impart better hospitality skills within the staffs working at the
guest house so that they are able to provide the best possible
hospitality experience to the guests during their stay at the guest house.
The session was taken by Mr. Digvijay Jamwal. The title tag for the training was 'Guest Always
notices the difference'. The topics covered during the session were:
-Service improvement
-Etiquettes
-Grooming
-Cleaning
-Guest feedback
25 staffs were present for the training session.
Knowledge Sharing Session

IMS internal audit training session was organised on 12
September 2018 at Soda Ash Division.
The session was taken by Mr. Sushil Kumar Singh (Asst. Manager-
QMS). The session highlighted several points that should be
followed by the related departments for audit purpose.
Fun Saturday

The recreation committee organised Fun Saturday on 15
September 2018 at Ahmedabad. The committee organised team
bonding game known as 'Blow the Ball through the goal' where 3
teams participated.

Road Safety Initiative
Knowledge Sharing Session @ SMCD
- Uses of Brainstorming
- Steps involved
- Problem-solving techniques
- Types and importance etc.
Twenty colleagues were present for the session
Taking the initiative towards road safety, the Administration
Department developed the road divider near the Navrangpura
Railway Crossing starting from GHCL of ice to M.G. Science college
(Commerce Six Road).
The initiative also included plantation and installation of signboard
with GHCL branding on the new dividers developed on the road
that extended to the length of 950 meters.
Knowledge sharing session was organized at SMCD, Port Victor on
30th August 2018. The topic chosen for the session was
'Brainstorming'. The presenter for the topic was Mr. Sanjay Pandey
(Manager-Operation).
The session started with the brief introduction of the topic that was
followed by the following points of discussion:
Picnic for employee and their Family @ Lignite division
As part of employee rejuvenation policy, employees of lignite
division were taken for a picnic along with their families to Mount
Abu, Rajasthan from 25th to 26th August 2018.
The travel plan included the visit to the sunset point and darshan at
Ambe Mata temple, Ambaji.
Free Medical Camp @ Madurai
organized the camp.
Free Medical Camp was organised at Yarn Division in association
with ESI Hospital and Dr. Agarwal Eye Hospital, Madurai. Free
diagnosis and medicines were given to 450 staffs which included
executives, permanent workers, contractual and Hostel
Apprentices.

Knowledge sharing session was organised on 23rd August 2018 at
Yarn Division, Madurai. The session was taken by Mr. M. Ravindran
(Manager, Production) on the topic “Ego State”.

Core Value Dissemination Session @ Madurai

Sir day was organised at the Yarn Division, Madurai on 15
September 2018.
Eight Executives presented their project idea in front of the top
management. DGM (HR) addressed the participants and
communicated the importance of organising such events every
year that extends great opportunities to all to bring their ideas on
one platform.

The main aim for organising the same was to make the executives of
level 1 and above understand the process of the survey and how to

Health Initiative Program @ CPD Chennai
Consumer Product Division along with Isha Life Health Solutions,
Chennai conducted a Health Initiative Program at Thiruporur Plant
for the employees on 15th September 2018. The program included
one hour of Yoga practice followed by Doctors session.

Ganesh Chaturthi Celebration @ Soda Ash Division
GHCL Soda Ash Division, Sutrapada celebrated Ganesh Chaturthi
this year with great spirit. The idol of lord Ganesha was placed in a
beautifully decorated pandal that was installed at Anurag Nagar

Colony. The idol was placed for puja from 13 to 17 September
2018.
All the colleagues jointly worshipped lord Ganesha for these 5 days. The celebration was very joyful
for all who participated in the puja.
Vishwakarma Puja at SMCD

On 17 September 2018, Vishwakarma Puja was celebrated
at SMC Division.
All the employees of engineering department worshiped

Birthday Celebration @ Ahmedabad

three employees who had their birthday in the month of August
2018.

Vishwakarma Puja at Home Textile Division

On 17 September 2018, Vishwakarma puja was celebrated at
Home Textiles Division.
All the employees of engineering department worshiped their
tools and instruments in front of Lord Vishwakarma, which are
generally used in their profession. They also prayed for smooth functioning of their machines.
After completion of puja, Prasad was distributed among the employees.
Ganesh Chaturthi Celebration @ Home Textiles Division
On the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, sthapana of lord Ganesh Idol
was done in the temple for one day on 13th September 2018. The
sthapana was done by the hands of our M.D. Mr. R S Jalan and Mr.
Sachin Kulkarni, Plant Head.
Colleagues from all the respective departments were present for
the sthapana puja. Visarjan of the idol was done on 14th
September 2018. The celebration was very joyous for all.
Janmashtami Celebration @ Textiles Division

Janmashtami was celebrated in the home textiles division on 3 September
2018. Sandhya Bhajan was organised for the occasion where all the
colleagues participated with great devotion and enthusiasm.
The celebration was very special this time as on the following day, Dahi- Handi was also organised
at the location. The participants were divided into four teams:
-Training Team
-Utility Team
-Weaving Team
-Engineering team
The weaving team emerged as the winner of Dahi Handi

Vinayangar Chaturthi Celebration @ Madurai
Yarn Division, Madurai celebrated Vinayangar Chaturthi at Shree
Gnana Shakti Karpaga Vinayagar Temple within the campus on

13 September 2018.
All the heads of respective departments, colleagues and the staff members were present for the
puja. Similar puja was also conducted at the head of ice of yarn division. The puja was followed by
the distribution of Prasadam to all.
Ganesh Chaturthi Celebration @ Khadsaliya Lignite Mine
Khadsalia Lignite Mine celebrated Ganesh Chaturthi from 13th September to
17th September 2018. Puja was organised on site which began with morning
aarti. This was followed by havan and evening aarti of Lord Ganesha.
All the colleagues along with their family, contractual labors, village sarpanch, and panchayat
representatives were present for the puja. Mahaprasad was distributed after the puja to all.
On the ifth day, the musical procession was arranged for the murti visarjan.

Festivals of India – October 2018
Ramnagar Ramlila
The world's oldest Ramlila, which reenacts the story of the Hindu epic
the Ramayana, has been running for nearly 200 years. It commences
with the incarnation of Lord Vishnu as Rama, to save humanity from
demon king Ravana. The Ramilia takes place over a month every year
from Anant Chaturdashi and ends on the full moon night.
When: September 23-October 24, 2018.
Where: Ramnagar, on the banks of the Ganges River opposite Varanasi.
Navaratri
Navaratri is a nine night festival that celebrates the Mother Goddess or
Shakti in all her manifestations, including Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati.
Worship and fasting take place in the daytime, while the nights are
reserved for feasting and dancing. The festival culminates with Dussehra,
the victory of good over evil, on the tenth day. In Delhi, the feature of
Navaratri celebrations are the Ramlila plays that take place all over the
city. The festival is celebrated as Golu, with the display of dolls, in south
India.
When: October 10-18, 2018.
Where: All across India, but particularly in Gujarat, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Varanasi, and Mysore.
Durga Puja
In honor of warrior Goddess Durga, beautifully handcrafted statues of
Durga are installed in podiums in almost every lane of the city during
this festival. People lock to the streets to view the goddess statues amid
mesmerizing light shows, drumming, and aromatic food stalls. On the
last day of the festival, the statues are paraded around the city before
being submerged in the river.
When: October 15-19, 2018.
Where: Kolkata, West Bengal. Durga Puja is also widely celebrated in
neighboring odisha.

Festivals of India – October 2018
Dussehra
The day after the Navaratri festival is known as Dussehra. It's widely
devoted to commemorating the defeat of the demon king Ravan by Lord
Ram. Huge ef igies of Ravan go up in smoke all over India. However, there
are other more unusual celebrations of the festival too. Some start at the
beginning of Navaratri, while others kick-off on the main day of Dussehra
and continue on for weeks. Not all are associated with Lord Ram and
Ravan. Goddess Shakti is worshiped in various forms too.
When: October 19, 2018.
Where: Particularly in northern India
Rajasthan International Folk Festival
This eclectic festival, which is the irst of its kind in India, showcases
regional roots music and the arts. It's a heady fusion of interactive
educational events, staged performances, and late night jam sessions.
Performers include singers, dancers, instrumentalists and storytellers
from various Rajasthani folk communities, as well as nationally and
internationally recognized artists. The festival has an outstanding
location in and around the imposing Mehrangarh Fort.
When: October 24-28, 2018.
Where: Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur, Rajasthan
The Sacred Festival
A festival of "Mind, Body and Soul", the Sacred Pushkar features a range
of activities focused on mindful and inspired living. These include
morning yoga, sound meditation and healing, devotional music, organic
cooking, and heritage and food walks, Packages including
accommodations, meals, and all activities are available.
When: October 12-14, 2018.
Where: Pushkar, Rajasthan.

Awards and Recognitions
On - The - Spot Award@ Home Textile Division
On-the-spot award was given to Mr. Krishna Singh Rathod and
Mr. Prem Kumar for rearranging the carton stacking for optimal
utilization of container. This helped reducing the cost for return and
loading of the container.
Mr. Abhishek Maldahiyar received on-the-spot award for taking
decision and getting the dry coal of good quality in the rainy season.
This helped maintaining the ef iciency of the boiler.
On-the-spot award was given to Mr. Dulal Biswas, Mr. Raghvendra
Singh, Mr. Rakesh Kaushik, Mr. Jayesh Kumar Bhatti and Mr. Mehul
Patel jointly for implementing bar code system for online process
production picking. This helped to simplify the warehouse processes.
Silver and Bronze awards for GHCL Weaving Team
In the annual convention organised by the Quality Circle Forum of India (QCFI), Vadodra on
10th September 2018, the weaving team representing GHCL received Silver and Bronze
award for their case studies.
The participating two teams were named as Unnati 1
and Unnati 2.
The topic presented by the team was:
Unnati 1: Interface Loss in Loom
Unnati 2: Fringe Length Loss in Loom
Mr. L. H. Saiyed was leading both the teams.

Awards and Recognitions
On-the-spot award @ Madurai
Mr. A. Shanmugasundaram received on-the-spot award for
introducing the idea of bringing small change in the joint air hose
(8mm to 10mm). This idea helped save Rs.84000/- per month.
Mr. A. Nagaraja Pandian received on-the-spot award for working
effectively with the company advocate for dismissal of the 2012
Balaram Civil Case and further for getting the stay order against
Tamilnadu government for acquiring our company land.
Mrs. M. Kavitha received the award for successfully opening bank
account for 28 workers and applying for PAN No. of 13 workers in a
very short notice of time.
On-the-spot award was given to Mr. Subramani for introducing multi
drum drive attached with gear box. This helped simplifying the
checking of gear box and multi drum drive.
Mr. Surgunam received 0n-the-spot award for introducing the idea
of pasting dust free cloth to the plant door. This helped improve the
door life of the plant.
Mr. Lenin Kumar received on-the-spot award for designing and
preparing the guide to collect the pegs during peg cleaning. Earlier this
process used to take 2.5 hours of time but with the help of the guide the
peg directly goes into the box that has reduced the time taken for the
same.
Mr. Pragalathan received on-the-spot award for designing and placing
the safe guard to the conveyor belt area that helped avoiding the cut in
tube conveyor.

Book Review
Smarter Faster Better by Charles Duhigg
The book covers several core topics which are tied to productivity: motivation, teams, focus, goals,
managing others, decision making, innovation, and absorbing data. Duhigg devotes one of these per
chapter, and then he has an appendix which pulls the pieces together with examples from his life (and a
few others).
The writer Duhigg discusses each topic with relevant examples in each chapter. It is clear that his
experience as a journalist with the New York Times gives him superior skills to investigate and describe
extremely relevant and compelling examples for each topics.
Highlights
1. The chapter on motivation brought up some great insights that explain some of the success around
self-organizing teams and motivation:
“The trick, researchers say, is realizing that a prerequisite to motivation is believing we have authority
over our actions and surroundings. To motivate ourselves, we must feel like we are in control.”
2.Concept of group norms and psychological safety are fascinating topics in chapter 2. As Duhigg
unpacks information from Google about team structure and success, he revealed how the individuals
and structure of the team mattered less than how the team grew comfortable functioning on a daily
basis. “It was the norms, not the people, that made teams so smart. The right norms could raise the
collective intelligence of mediocre thinkers. The wrong norms could hobble a group made up of people
who, on their own, were all exceptionally bright.”
3.The chapter on managing others had an amazing story of the development of Sentinel, a data
connections tool used by the FBI, with agile and lean development techniques at a time when those

concepts were still relatively new to many. It is a great anecdote for those of us who work in the
industry as Duhigg describes how huge teams of people with unbounded budgets could not
accomplish as much as a small team with a re ined process. “The software's development had been
overseen by a young man from Wall Street who had convinced the FBI to hire him by arguing that the
bureau needed to draw on lessons from companies such as Toyota, and methods such as lean
manufacturing and agile programming. He had promised he could get Sentinel working in less than
two years with a handful of software engineers — and then he had delivered.”
Closing Thoughts
I think anyone who is interested in maximizing their own productivity will ind this book a
valuable resource. As I said earlier, I think that the author could have pieced some of these
techniques together a bit more, but it has allowed me to spend some time in deep thought
on how I would do just that. With that being said, I'm not sure if it is a de iciency of the book
or an intended approach.
You will certainly ind things in this book that will change your personal and team
productivity approach for the better.

activities are focussed to cover a larger section of

downtrodden, needy and marginalized citizens
and also to create a social infrastructure for their
sustenance.
In one such initiatives, GHCL funded Rs.1.90
Cr. For the purchase of the MRI and ECO
Machine to “Smt. Vishandevi Nemichand Jain
Memorial Rotary Heart Care Unit,Trauma
Centre, Firozabad” in May 2018.
Our MD Mr. R.S. Jalan was present on the occasion. This initiative will help the centre to extend
better services to people in need.
