A Letter from the Curate
Dear Friends,
Suddenly, after what turned out to be a rather fine summer, autumn is upon us.
Members of my household have been very busy collecting conkers and kicking
through fallen, crunchy leaves while I have been marvelling at the changing colours
of the landscape and turning my thoughts to the selection of Harvest Festivals I will
take part in.
A wonderful thing about Harvest Festival, I always think, is the number of people
who are keen to celebrate or have fond recollections of services they attended as
children even if they no longer go to church. There is something about being
thankful for our food and being reminded how good it is to share what food we
have that brings about good feeling.
And this puts me in mind of a Bible story which I seem to have come across more
often than usual over the recent weeks – the Feeding of the 5000.
To refresh your memory, in this story, Jesus, having been teaching a great crowd of
followers is about to call it a day when he realises that these followers must be
hungry. He doesn’t want to send them home hungry so sets about finding out of
anyone has any food to share. It seems like no-one does but then a small boy
steps forward with his small basket of 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. Hardly a lot but
to that boy, all he had and it was all the assembled crowd had between them to
share.
Taking these 5 loaves and 2 fish Jesus performs a miracle and the whole crowd of
over 5000 people are fed with baskets and baskets leftover.
There are two things here about God and about Harvest: the first is that God
provides more than we need and at Harvest we are reminded that the only way we
may all be fed is by sharing what we have. The huge network of people, places and
resources needed to feed us all each depend on one another, and the rest of us
depend on all of them. This sharing of resources and gifts is the only way to ensure
all are fed and cared for but there are still places and ways in which this process
breaks down and some people are left without enough while others waste what
they have.
Harvest is a good time to both give thanks for what we have and to consider again
what we might share so why not join us at one of our Harvest Festival services this
year? St Thomas’ Market Rasen Harvest Festival is on Sunday 14 th October at
10am, Legsby Church’s is on the same day at 4pm and Messy Church Harvest is
on 7 th October at 4.15pm.
Looking forward to seeing you there!
Blessings,
Warden’s Window
As we march into autumn with Advent only eight weeks away it is time to
consider our options for the immediate and long term needs of St Thomas’ Church.
Three things that currently occupy our minds are Accessibility, Comfort and
Climate as well as increased Storage.
We need to consider if St Thomas’ is as accessible or user friendly as it needs to
be for the future! We have issues with step access at the South entrance, the
accommodation of mobility support vehicles within the Nave as well as restricted
access to the Lady Chapel.
Chris Middleton,
Warden & Verger
St. Thomas’ Market Rasen
Comfort and climate. We are all aware of the
limitations of the current heating system. We
need to look at our options for creating a
heated environment suitable for a church
which is used most days of the week that is
cost and environmentally efficient as well as
sustainable for the short and long term.
Storage. We need to consider safe and
secure storage of the equipment and goods
currently located in the base of the tower and
the north east corner of the nave. Whilst some
equipment is used on a weekly basis for the
church and others for book stalls etc on an
occasional basis, increased storage would
improve both the layout and tidiness of our
church.
Over the coming weeks and months, we will
be looking at these issues to consider what
can be done to make St Thomas’ Market
Rasen a welcoming place for our worshipers
and visitors alike.
in word and music led by Rev Richard and Sylvia Rice-Oxley
The Revd Geoffrey Studdert Kennedy was an Anglican Priest who served as a Chaplain in World War
I, winning the Military Cross for bravery. His nickname was Woodbine Willie, because he kept
soldiers supplied with cigarettes which helped calm their nerves in the face of battle. He wrote many
poems, including a number that depict life on the Western Front, poems about the human cost of war,
and theological reflection about it.
Messy Church
Messy Church met for the first time since the
Summer holidays on Sunday 16 th September.
We had great fun exploring communities – what it is
to live in one, what makes them good, what might
make them better and especially why we like living
where we do.
We made models out of gloopy mixture, tree
mosaics from eggshells, Lego versions on local
landmarks and cake birds’ nests!
We wrote postcards about what we like about living
in Market Rasen and have submitted these to be
presented to the council in recognition of their hard
work and assurance of our prayers.
We also played mini golf and constructed a huge
tree which started with a cross – you may have seen it in church soon after!
As we gathered for our celebration time we hung our handprints full of names of
people who love and help us onto the huge tree before learning the actions to an
exciting new song and hearing about a story Jesus told about a mustard seed.
Remember, even tiny beginnings can turn into something great with God’s help!
We then prayed for people and places in our town using maps and sticky ‘seeds’
before another song – an old favourite this time!
Takeaway pizza and chips were on the menu as a treat for our shared meal this
month – as well as the usual mountain of cake!
Join us for our next Messy Church on Sunday 7 th October at 4.15pm when we will
be celebrating Harvest!
“A thinner blue line in our county
would be a loss to the community”
The Bishop of Lincoln is concerned that forecast budget pressures may lead to
further cuts for Lincolnshire Police.
The Right Revd Christopher Lowson says the candour of the chief constable,
in warning of stark choices for Lincolnshire Police unless further funding is
available, is a wake-up call for the community and government.
The current budget is still being set. However, the plan for the future means
changes to policing if no further funding is forthcoming. The choices to make
savings include possible cuts to road policing and crime investigation, as well
as community and neighbourhood policing.
“I am willing to be a voice to ensure where possible Lincolnshire and its police
officers get a fair deal and we do not lose further police from our
communities. From a young age I was taught if I was in difficulty I could
always approach a police officer – less money
and less services means there may be no one to
approach,” says Bishop Christopher Lowson.
Yesterday the bishop was visiting local schools in
Spalding (pictured below). He was welcomed
and hosted at St Mary’s Cowbit by the school’s
mini police. The initiative has senior school
pupils meet local police and they are given a
uniform with a role in the school to promote
good behaviour.
“The mini police are just one example of
community based policing that is so valuable. A
thinner blue line in our county would be a loss to
the community,” says Bishop Christopher
Lowson.
The Children's Society
Christmas Cards, House Boxes, Christingle
Yes, it's that time of year. As in years past, Children's Society Christmas
Cards are again available for you to buy. The arrangements are the same as
usual – examples of the cards will be on display in the Church Room for you
to see, you can place your order and pay for the cards when they arrive.
The cards will be on display on Sundays in October after the 10am service.
If you are not able to see them on these occasions, please let me know and
we can make other arrangements. As well as cards, there are a number of
other seasonal items available, too, such as wrapping paper, gift bags and
Advent calendar.
Last year we bought over £500 worth of cards and that contributed over
£250 to the work of The Children's Society, so the sale of cards is a
worthwhile fund raiser for The Society. Many thanks to all who bought
cards last year. I hope that you will do so again this year and, if you didn't,
please do see what's on offer and consider buying some this year.
For those of you who are House Box Holders, the Box opening time is
approaching. We should be very pleased if you could please get your Box to
Jenny or to me by Sunday 25 th November.
Advent Sunday, 2 nd December, is the date for our annual Christingle Service
which will be at St Thomas’ at 3pm that day. The proceeds from the
Christingle Service also go to support the work of The Children’s Society.
With the participation of the pupils of the Primary School this is always a
joyful and exciting start to the Christmas season. Make a note in your diary!
Best wishes.
Market Rasen Primary
Welcome back to our new school year at Market Rasen Church of England Primary
School. We have welcomed our new Reception children and we have been very busy
with all of our children starting their new classes and their new IPC topics.
Our Year Six children have just returned from their residential trip to Carlton Lodge
outdoor centre where they enjoyed kayaking, wall climbing, building rafts and lots of
exciting opportunities to build new friendships with our Nettleton children. The children
had an amazing time and have enjoyed sharing their
achievements, particularly climbing the high ropes and
taking the ‘leap of faith’.
We have been enjoying
our new topics this term,
including Chocolate in
Year Three / Four and
Fairy Tales in Year One /
Two. The children were
very excited when a giant
foot print appeared in
their classrooms and they had to investigate who the foot print might belong to. The
children have also been enjoying their cooking in the curriculum lessons with the
Reception children having a great time making cream cheese and banana sandwiches.
We are continuing to develop reading opportunities through whole class lessons and we
are enjoying reading our class books to the children. We have been looking at our
favourite books and authors and produced some amazing displays around the corridors.
We are also looking forward to rehearsing for our Harvest Festival Service which will be
led by our Year Five children and we
are busy planning our ‘Big Brekkie’
event to raise funds for Christian Aid.
We are hoping you will be able to join
us for this event. Details will follow
within the next few days.
Thank you to everyone for their
continued support so far this year.
We are looking forward to sharing lots more exciting news with you throughout the year.
If you wish to contact us at anytime, please phone the School Office on 01673 842395 or
Thank you to everybody who has helped with to create the Poppy tribute. Currently
the first week in October.
The next task is to attach the poppies to the net so that it can then be attached to
the large camouflage nets. The
photograph shows some of the poppies
that have already been attached to the
net.
If you are able to help attach the poppies
