A letter from the Rector
Dear Friends,
I would like to thank everybody for their prayers, cards, gifts and the many best
wishes that Liz, I and the family received as we came to celebrate my final service
last Sunday 29th October 2019. It was wonderful to see so many people gathering
from the many different aspects of my ministry during my time at Market Rasen,
Legsby, Linwood and Lissington.
We are slowly unpacking the boxes in Gainsborough and are gradually becoming
straighter.
As part of my last service, I preached on the reading from Matthew Chapter 14:
v22-33. As you may know, this is one of my favourite readings. I especially like the
part where Jesus says “Come”, to Peter. He steps out of the boat, in rough seas
and begins to walk on water like Jesus did, for a few steps. The power of this
reading lies in the fact that Peter, rather than the other disciples steps out of the
boat. The other disciples stayed huddled together in the boat. It is a powerful image
and perhaps, a message for the Church in this age, that we too are called to “step
out of the boat”. As we respond to that call, we step out in faith, open to the new
possibilities before us that enable us to share the good news of Christ, to share the
love of God with those around us.
As we both journey on surrounded by God’s love, be assured of my prayers during
the interregnum.
God bless
Rev Steve
Safeguarding at St. Thomas’
Keeping all God’s people safe is a fundamental principle of the church and as a PCC we
take this seriously.
We have a Safeguarding Officer, Sheila Lamming, whose role is to work closely with the
incumbent over any safeguarding issues and to have an overview of all church activities
involving children and vulnerable adults.
Did you know all members of our PCC have to be and have been DBS checked? This is
because they are trustees of our church and we have children and vulnerable adult groups
within our church.
Did you know all children and youth leaders and vulnerable adult team leaders, within our
church need to be DBS and attend trainings on Protecting Children and Vulnerable Adults?
Did you know there are 8 publications kept in the Vestry on Safeguarding which can be
borrowed? These are: Protecting All God’s Children 4 th Edition; Promoting a Safe Church
2006; Promoting a Safe Church; House of Bishops’ policy statement 2017; Responding Well
to Domestic Abuse 2017; Safeguarding Training & Development Practice Guidance 2017;
Responding to Serious Safeguarding Situations 2015; Risk Assessment for Individuals who
may Pose Risk to Children or Adults 2015; Safeguarding Guidelines for Safer Recruitment
2016
Did you know the “House of Bishop’s Safeguarding Policy needs to be read by the
Incumbent, Clergy, Lay Readers, Church Wardens, volunteers who work with children and
vulnerable adults, Tower Captain and all PCC members? It’s available in the vestry
safeguarding file.
Did you know Risk assessments need to be completed on all church activities and passed
onto the Church Warden?
Do you know where the nearest First Aid Kits and Fire Extinguishers are in the church
building? There is a first aid kit in the vestry and one in the church room kitchen. Fire
Extinguishers are located in the vestry, Lady Chapel, entry porch, back of north aisle and
the bell tower. The Church Room has one in the Kitchen and also a fire blanket.
Did you know we have to keep all data secure and have consent to keep e-mail
addresses, phone numbers and photos?
Did you know we follow a 10 step procedure for the recruitment of all paid and voluntary
posts?
Did you know we have a complaints, grievances and whistle blowing policy?
The PCC have had to complete an audit for Parish Safeguarding Practice and the Diocese
will be doing a visit to ensure we are compliant.
It’s a lot of work and may seem over the top to you, but please remember that it is for the
protection of us all. Please help where possible by reading the publications, getting a DBS
done when required and reporting any safeguarding concerns to either the Incumbent or the
Safeguarding officer.
Thank you
Sheila Lamming
Mini Messy Church
Mini Messy is on Wednesdays,
10am to 11.30am every week during term time.
We have a tried and tested routine of half an hour of free play with a breakfast of toast,
jam, fruit and drinks for pre-school children and their parent or carers. At about 10.30 we
also put out crafts related to our bible story. We finish with a short worship session which
consists of songs and a bible story led by our puppet “Mini” who the young children
really enjoy. If you know of any young families, grandparents or carers who look after
preschool age children who would benefit by joining us please pass on this information
to them. Children are welcome from birth to 4 years of age. The cost of each session is
£1 per family but free the first time they attend.
Church of England
Primary School
Welcome to this term’s contribution to the church newsletter. We have been back at
school for a few weeks now and it’s lovely to see the children settling into their new
classes and many of them taking on new roles and responsibilities.
We have started on our exciting new curriculum this term and the children have
already had some wonderful WOW days to introduce the topic. We even had a Viking
Skyping the children in Y5/6. The Y3/4 children are looking forward to welcoming a
Roman soldier into school in the coming term and a visit to Lincoln to see many of the
Roman features that are still there. Y1/2 are enjoying learning about their own family
trees and living history. They’re having great conversations about the past with
parents and grandparents about how things have changed since their childhoods.
We are really proud of the way our new Reception children have settled into our
school. They are already joining in with all areas of school life and it’s lovely to see
them joining in with our songs and actions in Collective Worship. They have already
learnt so much and we are looking forward to seeing how much they come on
throughout their school life.
Already this term our Y5/6 children have had a wonderful visit to Grimsby Mosque
and showed fantastic respect in learning about the faith of others. It was great to see
them asking mature questions to deepen their understanding.
If you would like any further information or to discuss anything with us, please phone the School Office on
01673 842395 or visit our website at www.marketrasen.lincs.sch.uk
You can also follow us on Twitter at @NorthWoldsFed where you will find out more about what we have
been doing in school.
A Change of Traditions
One of the more striking features in our Church is the crucifix in the arch at the
east end of the south aisle. This dates from 1934 and is part of the
commemoration of the Fallen in the First World War. When that war ended, it was
decided that there would be in the Parish Church a war memorial on which the
names of the Fallen would be inscribed and there would be a Crucifix flanked by
statues of the Virgin Mary and St John erected on a rood beam across the
chancel arch. The memorial tablet was unveiled and dedicated in a service in
August 1920. However, there were insufficient funds at that time to complete the
rood screen project so it was not until 1934 that it was completed after a generous
donation was made towards the cost. That, unfortunately, was not the end of the
matter. The following year, cracks were noted in the oak rood beam but action
was not considered necessary then. The condition, however, deteriorated and in
1963 it was decided to remove the rood beam. The crucifix was placed on the
wall above the arch into the tower. The statues were stored but damaged by
wood worm and then disposed of. The crucifix was moved to its present position
when the millennium bell restoration project was undertaken in the tower.
This was not the first time that rood beam statues
had been an issue in our church. Back in the
sixteenth century the Church nationally was in
turmoil following King Henry VIII’s split from Rome.
When Queen Elizabeth I came to the throne the
realm was ardently Protestant and Catholic
practices were abhorred (officially) and measures
taken to suppress them. Such measures came to
our Church here in Market Rasen in the 1660s. A
document of 1665 tells us that robes and linen and
books “belonging to the popish services” had been
sold, defaced or taken away in the years before. In
particular, it notes that “the Rood with Marie and
John with the rest of the idolatrous images
belonging to the abominable mass was burnt in the
market place” three years before. These events must have been shocking and
upsetting for many of the townspeople who had been brought up in the traditions
of the Catholic Church and had recently enjoyed them again briefly when between
1553 and 1558 Queen Mary I had returned the Church to the Roman Catholic
traditions.
Workshop Details
Coping with Depression
Led by Michele Hampson
Depression can feel like wandering in the desert; a lonely and hard time. Those who have
experienced depression themselves or in loved ones learn how to survive. This
workshop explores what helps us cope, how our experience can help others and what
suggestions we have to offer the churches.
Understanding Anxiety and Panic
Led by John Leach
The most common form of mental pain, affecting around a quarter of the population, is
anxiety and panic attacks. This workshop will help us to understand what’s going on when
panic hits, and to use that understanding to find strategies to help ourselves and others we
know suffering from anxiety. This session will be a safe space, with no obligation to talk
about our own experiences, and hopefully will be a liberating experience.
Exercise for Wholeness
Led by Andy Jackson-Parr
Our physical bodies affect our mental and emotional states, for good or ill. This session will
explore how through exercise and other ways of taking care of our bodies we can begin to
work with them towards greater emotional and spiritual health and integration.
Mental Health First Aid
Led by Al Jenkins
Without needing to be qualified professionals there is still much we can do to help others in
times of pain and crisis. This session will offer something of an overview of mental health,
and explore effective ways of coming alongside those who are hurting.
Loneliness and Isolation
Led by Jackie Johnson
The following, written by St. Augustine of Hippo, is oft-quoted on posters and bookmarks:
‘Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.’
Do these words help or hinder those who experience periods of loneliness and isolation?
This workshop provides an opportunity to begin to unpack this theme, as we share our
thoughts and discuss a subject often difficult to broach in church circles.
A Biblical Toolbox for Mental Health
Led by Paul Hunter
Wherever we are on the continuum of Mental Health, what is God's perspective on our
contexts and situations?
In cooperation with the Holy Spirit, how can we use God's Biblical Toolbox for Mental Health
to assist us to move forward?
You will be able to attend two workshops during the day – please let us know which
you would like to attend when you book for the event.
Keynote Address Revd Jackie Johnson, Wellbeing and CMD Officer
We are used to the idea of taking a Sabbath day in each week in which to worship and
rest. But how might we apply the theological principles of the Sabbath to our everyday lives
in such a way that we attune ourselves to ‘Sabbath or Sabbatical Living’, thereby enhancing
our sense of wholeness and wellbeing?
Warden’s Window
Following the Development Team’s meeting with the Architect to
discuss the options or producing a set of provisional proposals, the
drawn information will be with us by the beginning of October. We
will then have a review meeting with the PCC, following which the
drawings can be displayed in Church until the end of October to
invite comments from the congregation and the wider community.
The next stage will be discussions with the DAC (Diocesan
Advisory Committee). A date has been set for the first week in
November for a group from Lincoln to visit the site to meet the
Project Development Team and the Architect. They will wish to
examine the various elements of the project with a view to advising on what needs
to be adjusted or amended where necessary, in order that we can create a scheme
that provides maximum benefit for our community both today and into the future.
Watch this space for more updates over the next few months.
Chris Middleton.
“You have a minute, Lord?” A sort of prayer ….
Lord, you have a minute?
This is about sulking. People sulking. Well, to be honest, Lord, not people; me. I
sulk, Lord. I go silent and black-thoughted; become glowering and covered in
frowns and lines. And nobody suffers but me.
Teach me to laugh it off, Lord. Teach me to get over it faster, to be normal
(whatever that is) and to have a sense of proportion. Not a lot to ask is it, Lord?
Sulking is like living in a darkened room in the wrong spectacles, in a draught. And
if people are nice to you and “cope” with you, you feel ten times worse. Sulking
magnifies its own cause and you can’t win, its ridiculous. Help me win, Lord, help
me not be ridiculous.
To tell you the truth, Lord I often don’t care much one way or the other about the
things I sulk over. How silly can I get?
But you made us Lord. Everything we owe to you. The sulks too, Lord? Who
needs them? What good are they? What does being sulky do for a person?
Look into it, Lord? At your convenience?
With thanks to David Kossoff.
