Orland Park WW survives,
thrives after July car crash

In business, as in life, you
never know when you might
get hit with a surprise.
But getting hit with a car?
That’s what happened July
24 at the Orland Park location
of WW, the company
formerly known as Weight
Watchers.
“It’s most definitely something
I’ve never dealt with
before,” said Debbie Moran,
a long-time WW territory
manager overseeing
the store. “And something
I hope I don’t ever have to
deal with again.”
The crash occurred around
6:30 a.m. as three staff members
readied to start their
day. No one was injured in
the accident, but the store
— located at 15176 S. La-
Grange Road in the Ravinia
Plaza retail center — sustained
significant damage as
the car traveled the length of
the space and finally came to
a stop near the restrooms.
“It was pretty scary,” Moran
said.
Orland Park emergency
responders and the employees
quickly sprang into action,
securing the scene and
letting members know there
would be no programming
that day.
A WW property manager
arranged for the business to
temporarily relocate to a vacant
space in the same plaza.
Days later, the business was
back up and running.
“The biggest, most important
things you need to
conduct our workshops are
the people, some scales, and
some chairs and tables, so
that’s what we moved over
there,” said Moran. “It’s difficult
in a situation like this,
obviously, but being able to
just walk across the parking
lot — it definitely made

it more convenient for our
members.”
While Moran started planning
the damaged store’s
restoration, the location’s
staff and members carried
on as usual.
For WW members, that
routine involves the weight
management programming
as well as guidance
on overall health and wellbeing,
Moran said. The
Orland Park location has
been around for about six
years and is the largest in
the territory she oversees,
which includes all of South
Chicagoland and Northwest
Indiana.
With the business running
smoothly, repair work at the
original location picked up
pace.
The space was fully restored
with new floors, a new
paint scheme and a brighter,
more modern look in-line
with the company’s new
WW branding. And on Sept.
22, less than two months after
the accident, the original
location reopened to members
for the first time.
“The beautiful thing about
WW is that the members really
do form a community,”
Moran said. “You may walk
in the door a stranger, but by
the time you leave — and
especially if you attend our
workshops week after week
— you really do become like
a family.”
