Actually, it was Heavrin
sent.
The Eagles’ Josh Heavrin
provided two critical plays
that allowed his team to end
its four-game losing streak
and keep its faint hopes for
the state playoffs alive.
The multi-talented senior
put Sandburg ahead 12-7
with a 76-yard touchdown
on a kickoff return in the
second quarter. Late in the
game, Heavrin helped seal
the win with an interception
of a pass intended for
the Chargers’ gifted receiver
Mike Warfield.
So what was his favorite
play of the night?
“I’d probably have to say
my kick return,” Heavrin
said with a wide smile.
“Working as a team I saw
my blocks form for me and
I just thought it was a perfect
moment.”
Sandburg Coach Scott Peters
and his staff made a key
adjustment on the kickoff
return.
“We had noticed some
of the ‘pooch’ kicks they
do and we moved Josh up,
he’s usually one of our deep
Poor Heather. Not only did she pick up a loss without
her predicted team taking the field (Providence
Catholic) but she sinned on two other games and fell
from second to fifth.
guys,” Peters said. “He made
a huge play there.”
Peters had to make a huge
decision at the end of the
game ... and it worked.
With Stagg at the doorstep
with a chance to take the
lead, Peters went against the
book and declined a 10-yard
holding penalty on the Chargers.
Instead, he gave Stagg
an opportunity on a fourth
down from just the 18-yardline.
“With some of the trick
plays Stagg have, my thought
was to give them one chance
not two. It worked out,” Peters
said with a laugh. “I’m
sure people would have been
yelling if it didn’t.”
Sandburg started the scoring
in the opening quarter
when quarterback Ben
Starcevich scored the first of
his two TDs on a one-yard
sneak, capping off a 64-yard,
10-play drive.
Stagg bounced back to
take a 7-6 lead on a 32-yard
catch and run by Warfield
from QB Robbie Hansen.
However, just 14 seconds
later Heavrin’s TD return
gave the Eagles a 12-7 edge.
It stayed that score until
the third quarter when
Stagg’s Hansen tossed a 18-
yard scoring pass to Nick
Harper.
Sandburg scored its winner
on an incredible sevenyard
scramble by Starcevich.
“I probably made the
wrong read. Once I figured I
had the ball I’d get it in the
end zone,” the senior joked
of a run where he broke numerous
tackles.
With an 18-14 lead it was
then up to the defense led by
linebacker Alex Hirschfield
and the front four linemen of
Dylan Goodsell, Cam Woolery,
Nick Jandura and Hamza
Ismail. The group limited
the Chargers to a minus 2
yards rushing and forced
Stagg to pass the ball.
“Stagg’s our biggest rival.
We saw them on film and we
knew if we came and were
mean and physical that we
could dent them a little bit.
That was the game plan and
we executed it,” Hirschfield
said
While the Chargers’ running
game was dented, Warfield
had a big night with his
