Dear NewFest Members, Partners, Supporters and Friends,
Welcome to the 30th annual New York LGBT Film Festival! This milestone anniversary
festival is an opportunity to look back at our history and to look forward to an exciting
new generation of LGBTQ filmmakers and the stories they tell.
Harkening back to NewFest’s beginnings in 1988 during the height of the AIDS crisis,
Yen Tan’s acclaimed new film 1985 couldn’t be a better choice for our Opening Night
gala. The 1980’s are also revisited in our New York Centerpiece, Ondi Timoner’s powerful
narrative MAPPLETHORPE, which explores the iconic artist’s controversial life and work.
And our Documentary Centerpiece DYKES, CAMERA, ACTION! takes a look back at our
community’s rich history of women filmmakers.
Supporting Sponsors:
This year's lineup brings a variety of current international issues to light. Our U.S.
Centerpiece BOY ERASED, which stars Nicole Kidman and Lucas Hedges, takes on the
topical issue of conversion therapy, while our International Centerpiece RAFIKI tells an
innocent story of love, but until last month, had been aggressively banned in its home
country of Kenya.
Screening Partners:
With 32 countries represented in over 140 new narratives, documentaries, shorts and
episodics, we hope you’ll be able to lose yourself—and find yourself—in screenings
that span the entire LGBTQ+ spectrum. And if our anniversary puts you in a nostalgic
mood, please join us for a 10th anniversary screening of Gus Van Sant’s MILK, featuring
a conversation with Harvey Milk’s nephew Stuart Milk, as well as 20th anniversary
screenings of GIA starring Angelina Jolie, and Lisa Cholodenko’s seminal film HIGH ART.
Media Partners:
