Harkening back to NewFest’s beginnings in 1988 during the height of the AIDS crisis,
Yen Tan’s acclaimed new film 1985 couldn’t be a better choice for our Opening Night
gala. The 1980’s are also revisited in our New York Centerpiece, Ondi Timoner’s powerful
narrative MAPPLETHORPE, which explores the iconic artist’s controversial life and work.

community’s rich history of women filmmakers.

This year's lineup brings a variety of current international issues to light. Our U.S.
Centerpiece BOY ERASED, which stars Nicole Kidman and Lucas Hedges, takes on the
topical issue of conversion therapy, while our International Centerpiece RAFIKI tells an
innocent story of love, but until last month, had been aggressively banned in its home
country of Kenya.
