by Oscar Wilde. Gray, who sells his soul to preserve<br />

his youth, pays a price, descending into debauchery<br />

as those around him are drawn to their own ruin.<br />

It opened Sept. 23 and continues through Nov. 16.<br />

“Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead,” by Tom<br />

Stoppard, a comedy based on Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,”<br />

Happened” opened Oct 7. The story, by Sarah B.<br />

Mantell is based on Shakespeare’s “The Merchant<br />

of Venice,” exposing the realities of Jewish history<br />

and drawing three-dimensional characters from the<br />

stereotypes depicted in the original piece. It continues<br />

through Nov. 4. Tickets are $20 to $39.<br />

California Art Club Gallery at the Old Mill, 1120 Old<br />

Mill Road, San Marino, presents the exhibition “Monumental<br />

Miniatures 2018,” spotlighting the appeal of<br />

small-format artwork, which includes nearly 70 original<br />

paintings. Despite their small sizes, the works feature<br />

exquisite detail. The exhibition went on view Sept. 18<br />

presents the exhibition “Shiguchi: The Hidden Art of<br />

Japanese Joinery,” showcasing the work of architect,<br />

historian and preservationist Yoshihiro Takishita, and<br />

exploring the intricate craft of the ancient joiner’s<br />

art known as shiguchi. It went on view Sept. 27 and<br />

continues through Nov. 4 from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.<br />

The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical<br />

Gardens, 1151 Oxford Road, San Marino, presents a<br />

new work written and directed by playwright Stan Lai,<br />

“Nightwalk in the Chinese Garden,” offered in partnership<br />

with the CalArts Center for New Performance. The<br />

play is set against the backdrop of the garden, lake and<br />

pavilions at night, weaving together elements of the<br />

Chinese romantic tragicomedy “The Peony Pavilion”<br />

with tales of early 20th century California. The play is<br />

performed in English with some passages from “The<br />

Peony Pavilions” sung in Chinese. The work opened<br />

Sept. 21 and is presented from 7:30 to 9 p.m. nightly,<br />

except Sundays through Oct. 26. Tickets are $95 to<br />

$150 or $85 to $140 for members. The exhibition<br />

“Architects of a Golden Age: Highlights from The Huntington’s<br />

Southern California Architecture Collection”<br />

goes on view. It features some 20 original drawings<br />

and plans depicting elegant, powerful, whimsical and<br />

iconic buildings constructed between 1920 through<br />

1940, during a time of architectural innovation, rapid<br />

growth and the arrival of new talent from around the<br />

IAMA Theatre Company, in a guest production at the<br />

Pasadena Playhouse, 39 S. El Molino Ave., Pasadena,<br />

presents “American Hero,” playwright Bess Wohl’s<br />

darkly comic celebration of the power of unity and<br />

teamwork to overcome adversity. “American Hero” is<br />

the story of three up-and-coming sandwich makers<br />

at a sub franchise whose quest to attain the American<br />

dream is interrupted by a series of strange events, and<br />

they become unlikely allies in a post-recession world.<br />

The play opened Sept. 21 and continues at 8 p.m.<br />

USC Pacific Asia Museum, 46 N. Los Robles Ave.,<br />

Pasadena, presents its fall exhibition “Ceremonies and<br />

Celebrations: Textile Treasures from the USC Pacific<br />

Asia Museum Collection,” on view through Jan. 6.<br />

The exhibition explores select examples across Asia,<br />

highlighting ideas that can connect the continent’s vast<br />

regions. Some examples on display are rarely exhibited<br />

because of their fragile nature and the negative effects<br />

of light on the natural dyes they contain. “Ceremonies<br />

and Celebrations” is divided into four thematic<br />

sections: gender, status, religion and ceremony. It<br />

explores the ways these themes are reflected in textile<br />

art. Related programming, including discussions,<br />

workshops, film and performances, are included<br />

Unbound Productions presents its Wicked Lit series<br />

of plays, which opened Oct. 4 and continues through<br />

Marengo Ave., Altadena. This year’s series is titled “The<br />

Chimes and the Corpse,” and each night features performances<br />

of two adapted works. One is “The Chimes:<br />

A Goblin Story,” adapted from a novella by the same<br />

name by Charles Dickens. The other is “Teig O’Kane<br />

and the Corpse” by Kerry Kazmierowicztrimm, adapted<br />

from the short story by Ernest Rhys. Each evening<br />

features performances at 7:30 and 9 p.m. Tickets are<br />
