Recently concerned neighbors in Seven
Lakes North who had been feeding
a few neighborhood cats noticed
very young kittens. Joan Trombini of
Sandhills Cat Coalition went there to
assess the situation.
She found there were 3 adult cats and
7 kittens in the area. Over a period of
three days, she trapped all the cats.

Department and NC State Police including
Trooper H.J. Haywood who issued
citations to the truck driver.
Unfortunately, I was recently involved
in a horrifi c traffi c accident
at the intersection of Carthage Road
and Beulah Hill Church Road when a
semi-truck failed to obey a stop sign.
I wanted to offer my sincerest thanks
and appreciation to all of those “fi rst
responders”, and wonderful residents
of the Seven Lakes area whom immediately
came to my rescue including
Mr. Gerald Mabe who kept me calm
during my short wait for the EMS and
paramedics to arrive to get me out of
the car and to the hospital.

This year’s much awaited fall farm
tour will take place on Sunday October
21st from 11:00 am until 4:00
pm and will feature 6 farms including
the farm purchased by Prancing
Horse in 2016.
This is the fi rst time the farm will
be open to the public, and during
the tour visitors to Prancing Horse
will see vaulting team and dressage
demonstrations as well as other
activities including face painting for
the kids.
Lunch will be available for purchase
with food trucks from The Market
Place, Roasted and Toasted, Rome
‘N Round,and Cold Stone Creamery.
The 30-acre farm , located in Hoffman,
offers horsemanship programs
for clients from age 3 to over
50.
Riders include children from Sandhills
Children Center and from public
school exceptional needs classes.
Additional programs are Freedom
Reins which is geared to veterans
who are referred by the Wounded
Worriers Project and Be Herd, a mental
health group receiving equine
assisted psychotherapy.
Five other beautiful horse farms located
in Hoffman and Foxfi re Village
will be part of the event as well.
The tour starts at The Foxfi re General
Store, 1960 Hoffman Road
in Jackson Springs, where you will
receive a detailed map and program
book beginning at 11:00am.
Tickets priced at $20 can be purchased
in advance at Lady Bedford’s,
Pinehurst; Cabin Branch,
Southern Pines; A Bit Used, Vass;
Moore Equine, Southern Pines,
Sandhills Winery, West End; Foxfi re
General Store, Jackson Springs and

The tour helps to raise much needed
funds enabling the mission of
Prancing Horse, which serves an
average of 100 individuals a week
and enhances the lives of those

The unique exterior brick corbeling –
rarely seen in architecture today – is
preserved, and the vintage arches
and windows have been restored.
Brick walls that have been standing
for over 120 years give way to high
ceilings, and the plant’s smokestack
will be rebuilt using its original base,
returning a lost but defining feature
of the Village’s early landscape.
Portions of the plant have been renovated
to include a smokehouse for
the restaurant and a greenhouse for
herbs, which could be used for both
the restaurant and for brewing ingredients.
A trellis designed to replicate
the train track that brought coal into
the plant covers seating outside. The
trellis is supported by the same pylons
that held the track in the early 1900s.

The plant’s original arched entrance will be recovered,
and the new arched opening will be filled in with a glass entryway.
Also included in the renovation will be the return of the smokestack,
which was a defining landscape feature of the original Village. The
smokestack will be restored in relation to the scale of the renovation
and may use the original base, which still remains.
The Pinehurst Brewery will be an ideal setting for group functions,
with special sections reserved for private party use only.
On New Years Eve, 1895, the steam
produced by the Village Power House
enabled The Holly Inn to welcome
the first guests to Pinehurst with luxury
amenities – heat and electricity.
The steam plant powered the
homes, hotels and cottages of Pinehurst
until it was shuttered in the
1990s, falling into disrepair and,
at one time, slated for demolition.
Now, after a full renovation by Pinehurst
Resort to maintain its original
façade and capture the character of
the century-old building, the steam
plant will re-emerge as the Pinehurst
Brewing Company, which is
planned to open in the fall of 2018.
Much of the original steam plant
building remains and will feature a
10-barrel microbrewery. An observation
platform overlooking the brewhouse
will be a focal point of the
taproom, and the dining room will
be complemented by a bar, a beer
garden and an all-seasons patio.

Camping overnight for a beer release
is nothing new in the craft beer
world. But here, such a scene is validation
for a brewery that just a few
years ago barely registered a blip in
the Charlotte craft beer community.
Beer will be brewed at the Pinehurst
Resort’s Brewery by Eric Mitchell,
“Brewmaster Extraordinaire”, the former
head brewer of Heist Brewery in
Charlotte.
Eric, a 2013 graduate of Auburn
had a degree in hospitality management,
but his first love was brewing.
He’d been a home brewer for years.
When his wife got a job in Charlotte
Eric started knocking on the
doors of breweries, looking for a job.
The rest is history…Eric Mitchell has
earned the reputation as one of the
most highly regarded brewers in the
United States. He has won awards
form the the World Beer Cup and other
organizations and Pinehurst welcomes
Eric and his family to the Village.

Taking candy from children is usually
frowned upon, but teaching kids
the value of giving back by donating
their excess Halloween candy in
support of US troops, veterans, and
fi rst responders is a win-win for kids,
parents, and dentists alike.
This Halloween, local trick-or-treaters
will join kids across the nation when
they bring their Halloween candy and
handwritten letters of gratitude to
Seven Lakes Family Dentistry.
The goodies will be shipped to
Operation Gratitude for inclusion in
over 300,000 care packages to US
Service Members deployed overseas
in harm’s way and to fi rst responders
serving here at home.
As a sign of appreciation for their donation,
Dr. Jennifer Massey of Seven
Lakes Family Dentistry will pay the
children $1/pound of candy donated
(up to $5) and give each child a
dental health goody bag.
Paper and markers will be provided
to write letters or drawings to send

There has been a major increase in
vandalism in the Seven Lakes area
including auto break-ins, vandalism
at the parks and swimming pool
culminating with Graffi ti painted on
the building adjacent to the Fitness
Center on the Northside.
There were several kids from the
Chapel that volunteered and gave up
their time to repaint the graffi ti which
was tagged by a few “bad apples” in
the area.
The kids from the chapel can lay
claim to Dylan’s song “Clean Cut

Early witches were people who practiced
witchcraft—they used magic
spells and called upon spirits for help
or to bring about change. Most witches
were thought to be pagans doing
the Devil’s work. Many, however, were
simply natural healers or so-called
“wise women” whose choice of profession
was misunderstood.
It’s unclear exactly when witches
came on the historical scene, but
one of the earliest records of a witch
is in the Bible in the book of 1 Samuel,

B.C. and 721 B.C. It tells the story of
when King Saul sought the Witch of
Endor to summon the dead prophet
Samuel’s spirit to help him defeat the
Philistine army.
It’s Midnight---The “Witching Hour”
The witch roused Samuel, who then
prophesied the death of Saul and his
sons. The next day, according to the
Bible, Saul’s sons died in battle, and
Saul committed suicide.
Other Old Testament verses condemn
witches, such as the oft-cited
Exodus 22:18, which says, “thou
shalt not suffer a witch to live.” Additional
Biblical passages caution
against divination, chanting or using
witches to contact the dead.
Witch hysteria really took hold in Europe
during the mid-1400s, when
many accused witches confessed, often
under torture, to a variety of wicked
behaviors. Within a century, witch
hunts were common and most of the
accused were executed by burning at
the stake or hanging.
Between the years 1500 and 1660,
up to 80,000 suspected witches
were put to death in Europe. Around
80 percent of them were women
thought to be in cahoots with the
Devil and filled with lust. Germany
had the highest witchcraft execution

rate, while Ireland had the lowest.
One of the most famous witches in
Virginia’s history is Grace Sherwood,
whose neighbors alleged she killed
their pigs and hexed their cotton.
Other accusations followed and Sherwood
was brought to trial in 1706.
The court decided to use a controversial
water test to determine her guilt
or innocence. Sherwood’s arms and
legs were bound and she was thrown
into a body of water. It was thought
if she sank, she was innocent; if she
floated, she was guilty. Sherwood
floated, she was guilty. Sherwood
didn’t sink and was convicted of being
a witch. She wasn’t killed but put
in prison and for eight years.

depiction of witches riding broomsticks
has its origins in hallucinogenic
plant pharmacology, as popularized
by Shakespeare, but the indigenous
knowledge predates even him.
Hallucinogenic chemicals called tropane
alkaloids are made by a number
of plants including Atropa belladonna
(deadly nightshade). During
the Middle Ages, parts of these
plants were used to make “brews,”
“oyntments” or “witches’ salves” for
witchcraft, sorcery and other nefarious
activities.

Hurricane Florence Has Gone, but
Challenges for the Carolinas Have
Just Begun. It will not be easy drying
out, fi xing up and rethinking whole
ways of life in a region drenched and
deeply shaken by more than eight trillion
gallons of rain.
The storm and its subsequent fl ooding
have already killed at least 42
people. 6,000 National Guard soldiers
and thousands more federal
disaster-response workers spread
across the region have six million
emergency meals to hand out, four
million liters of water, 700,000 blankets
and 6,000 cots.
Floodwaters keep rising in the Carolinas
as post-Tropical Storm Florence
continues to dump rain on the region.
The dangerous storm has already left
more than 30 dead and displaced
thousands of others, leaving them
without electricity or shelter.
In the aftermath of Florence, North
and South Carolina offi cials are encouraging
people to volunteer or donate
if they can. Here’s a guide to
how to help.
Cash is king after a disaster, says
Julia Brooks, a researcher with the
Harvard Humanitarian Initiative. The

initiative analyzes and improves the
ways in which communities and professionals
respond to emergencies.
Brooks has studied dozens of disasters
and said that often people’s inclination
is to donate supplies, but
doing so can actually hinder recovery
efforts.
“Supplies often clog up transportation
systems; they become a burden
on fi rst responders in the area to
manage, sort, warehouse and distribute,
and often they aren’t even
the things that people need on the
ground,” Brooks said. “The exception
is, when credible groups on the
ground are requesting specifi c things
and are saying that they are set up
to receive them. When in doubt, she
says, donating cash is better.”
With that in mind, people who are
looking to donate should be wary
of whom they are donating to and
should research any organization before
donating to it.

The Women of Seven Lakes met October
4th at the Chapel of the Pines .
The Women of Seven Lakes opened
the 2018-2019 meeting year on
September 6th with a picnic lunch
and membership drive held at the
Seven Lakes North Clubhouse.
The attendees enjoyed a delicious
lunch of Subway sandwiches and
chips. The highlight of the picnic
were cupcakes handmade by board
member Linda Stevens made to look
like hamburger sliders.
Andrea Schmidt presented a program
on painting with watercolors.
Andrea is a Juried Signature Artist
with the State of West Virginia Watercolor
Society and has more than
40 years of teaching experience with
watercolors, acrylics, and oils.
The November meeting will be held
November 1, 2018, at the Chapel in
the Pines at 2:00.

neighborhood. The kittens were
treated for parasites and other illnesses,
taken into foster homes for
6 weeks where they learned to interact
with humans and use a litterbox.
All seven precious kittens have
found loving, forever homes, and will
be neutered when old enough. The
neighbors pitched in on the cost of
the surgeries, and even helped foster
the kittens. This is an example of
a true community bonding together
to solve a problem, in a humane
way, of a growing neighborhood cat
community.
Sandhills Cat Coalition, has answered
the call with a mission is to
alleviate the suffering of homeless,
stray and feral cats by providing humane
spay/neuter services, and by
rescuing and responsibly placing as
many animals as possible in permanent,
loving homes.
We do not operate a shelter, and we
strive to be a resource for adopters
and the general public,” says Deb

Donations were taken at the door
for a local Food Bank. Copies of the
history of the development of Seven
Lakes written by Ann Bass, “Seven
Lakes - A Place in the Sun” were sold
for $10.00, and a copy of the book
was given as a door prize.
Additional copies of the book will be
available for sale this Fall at meetings
and at the Pancake Breakfast
with Santa to be held December 1,
2018.
The Women of Seven Lakes will host
a speaker from the Clara McLean
House who will discuss the mission
and work of the facility, which
provides affordable lodging for the
family of out of town patients seeking
medical care in our area.
Moore County’s overpopulation of
neighborhood, stray and feral cats
creates heartbreaking scenes of
dumped kittens, and sick, injured
animals wandering our streets and
rural areas. The Animal Center of
Moore County has been inundated
with kittens this season, and they
are doing all they can, with the
resources they have, to reduce the

6th Annual Southern Pines Veterans Parade
In 2012 at the request of town and local veteran leaders, the
Southern Pines Veterans Parade was reborn. A small team of highly
motivated and extremely dedicated veterans led the charge, and in
67 days the Town of Southern Pines had it’s first Veterans Parade
in 71 years. The late David Woodruff, a son of Southern Pines, a
renowned local historian, and author wrote, “with 12% of Moore
County’s population being military veterans, there is no doubt this
was the right thing to do. In some circles, Southern Pines is known
as a military town.” David Woodruff was instrumental in vision,
growth, and evolution of what is known today as the Sandhills Vet
Fest and the Southern Pines Veterans Parade. These events are his
legacy.
On 10 November 2018 at 10 a.m., we will commemorate the 6th
Annual Southern Pines Veterans Parade. We take great pride fulfilling
our mission statement, “Support Our Troops, and Honor Our
Veterans,” and living up to our motto, “For Veterans, By Veterans.”
This is a very planning, labor, and financially intensive undertaking,
and we would like to express our unconditional appreciation for our
tremendous veterans, generous sponsors and selfless volunteers, for
without this winning combination, there would not be a Southern
Pines Veterans Parade or a Sandhills Veterans Festival.
Parade Application/Registration
Thank you all for your interest in the Southern
Pines Veterans Parade. Whether this is your first
time or whether you have been with us since the inaugural
event in 2012, we hope you know how much
your support means to our veterans and our community.
This parade has been the focal point event
of what began in 2012 as Veteran’s Weekend, and
since then it has evolved into the most anticipated
event of the year, the Sandhills Veteran’s Festival, a
week long series of events that focus on honoring
the strength of our Sandhills Veterans, our active
duty members, and our beloved military families.
Applicants must understand that the parade committee
may limit the size/scope of individual entries
in order to produce the best overall quality of the
event.
To participate in the parade, members must complete
the application and return it to the parade
committee no later than October 25. The application
