CLEAN GREEN KIWIS: A group of high school students have cleaned up New Brighton Beach.<br />

NEW BRIGHTON Beach is<br />

looking a whole lot sharper after<br />

a group including Shirley Boys’<br />

and Mairehau High School<br />

students volunteered their time<br />

to tidy it up.<br />

The clean-up on Wednesday<br />

was organised by One School<br />

Network – a group of students<br />

from different schools across<br />

the city. The group also included<br />

students from Burnside High,<br />

Marian College and St Bede’s<br />

College.<br />

Marian College deputy head<br />

girl Olivia Altenburg-Carey<br />

said the students wanted to do<br />

something in the community<br />

before they went on study leave<br />

for exams.<br />

“You don’t need much for a<br />

beach clean-up. It’s always fun<br />

to get together and we could do<br />

some good at the same time,”<br />

Olivia said. Bags of rubbish were<br />

collected by the students.<br />

“Ten bags of rubbish, which<br />

doesn’t sound like much, but it’s<br />

10 bags of rubbish no longer on<br />

the beach, which is great.”<br />

with six surfers challenging for<br />

titles and came out with one<br />

title – Casper McCormick from<br />

St Bede’s College who won the<br />

under-18 longboard division.<br />

was impressive in the girls<br />

under-<strong>16</strong> division finishing third<br />

while Papanui High School’s Jai<br />

Oakley finished second in the<br />

under-14 boys division.<br />

In the under-18 girls division<br />

Rangiora’s Tegan Bishop finished<br />

third to claim more valuable final<br />

day points for Canterbury on<br />

their way to creating history.<br />

Meanwhile, Raglan-based<br />

Christchurch surfer Connor<br />

McLennan finished second in the<br />

under-18 boys division.<br />
