beach
CLEAN GREEN KIWIS: A group of high school students have cleaned up New Brighton Beach.

NEW BRIGHTON Beach is
looking a whole lot sharper after
a group including Shirley Boys’
and Mairehau High School
students volunteered their time
to tidy it up.
The clean-up on Wednesday
was organised by One School
Network – a group of students
from different schools across
the city. The group also included
students from Burnside High,
Marian College and St Bede’s
College.
Marian College deputy head
girl Olivia Altenburg-Carey
said the students wanted to do
something in the community
before they went on study leave
for exams.
“You don’t need much for a
beach clean-up. It’s always fun
to get together and we could do
some good at the same time,”
Olivia said. Bags of rubbish were
collected by the students.
“Ten bags of rubbish, which
doesn’t sound like much, but it’s
10 bags of rubbish no longer on
the beach, which is great.”

under-18 longboard division.
Promising Haeata Community
Campus talent Estella Hungerford
was impressive in the girls
under-16 division finishing third
while Papanui High School’s Jai
Oakley finished second in the
under-14 boys division.
In the under-18 girls division
Rangiora’s Tegan Bishop finished
third to claim more valuable final
day points for Canterbury on
their way to creating history.
Meanwhile, Raglan-based
Christchurch surfer Connor
McLennan finished second in the
under-18 boys division.
