Election bonanza, with more forums to come

This week, the
Malibu Surfside
News shared a good
amount of its ink with all
10 of our local election
candidates.
On Pages 8-13, you
can hear from each of the
individuals running for
Malibu City Council and
SMMUSD Board of Education.
With Nov. 6 just
around the corner, I hope
you’ve had a chance to do
a bit of your own homework
on the candidates.
But, if not, please let these
questionnaires be your
starting point. It doesn’t
get much more straightforward,
as the answers are
all in the candidates’ own
words.
Furthermore, there are
more future opportunities
to meet some of the individuals
face to face, too.
Stay tuned to our calendar
in the weeks ahead, as
announcements continue
to pour in, but there are
at least two upcoming forums
for the City Council
candidates in the days
ahead.
One, scheduled for
6:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday,
Oct. 23, is to occur
at Malibu West Beach
Club (30756 Pacific Coast
Highway). The second
that we know of thus far
is slated for 5-8 p.m. Monday,
Oct. 29, at Sunset
Restaurant (6800 Westward
Beach Road).
For the SMMUSD
Board of Education candidates,
I have not heard
of any upcoming forums,
but I will keep our readers
posted in print (if possible)
and on our social media
channels (Facebook:
@MalibuSurfsideNews;
Twitter: @MalibuNews) if
that changes in the coming
days.
Whether your mind is
already made up or your
vote is up in the air, I hope
that you can take the time
to read through all 10 of
the questionnaires, and
that this week’s issue can
serve as a resource in your
very important decisions.

An out-of-town supporter
To whom it may concern,
I am writing in support of
the Malibu Farmers Market
(name says it all really ...
it’s Malibu’s Farmers Market!).
I understand for some
time now they have had
[to] endure months of stress
with the threat of not being
able to operate due to
demolition and construction
going on at the site the
Malibu Fitness posted Thursday, Oct. 11, about
its victory in the Malibu Choice Awards: “Honored
and Proud to be Malibu’s award winners for
BEST in FITNESS for the 2nd year #bestgym
#bestspin #bestyoga #bestpilates #bestdance
#bestrainer”

Scammers use social media to post a
legitimate home listing, then offer it a much
lower price. Actual landlords allow potential

nearly 20 years.
I would hope that by
now the City of Malibu
and LA County should
realize just how valuable
this market is for the community
and what an icon it
has become for the City of
Malibu. I sincerely hope
everyone can show true
and honorable support
for the market, a local endeavor
that gives back to
the City and [is] enjoyed
shows,” Neel said. “The
demands I place upon it are
relatively minor, but it’s
always ready to go.”
And Neel’s best short
story?
“It’s a recurring story,”
he explains. “Most folks
under 50 years old do not
know what it is, think it’s
from an Italian manufacturer
and once I tell them
it’s a Studebaker, they
always respond, ‘Who built
Studebakers?’ If you can
answer that, then you get a
lollipop.”
On Malibu — a paradise
where Neel visits frequently
— Neel says he enjoys “the
amazing scenery, picture
opportunities and driving
with the windows down,
radio off and listening to
the supercharger whine.”

I also understand the
County had confirmed the
market would be allowed
to run as normal during the
demolition and construction
process. I hope this was not
just a false promise?
We all hope everyone’s
efforts of support will not
go unnoticed and the outcome
will be positive for
all.
