MEN’S GOLF
Waves win invitational, set
school records
RJ Manke and the Waves
set multiple school records
Oct. 9 as the Waves won
the Alister MacKenzie Invitational.
Pepperdine’s previous
team records were 18-under
for 18 holes (2007 Turtle
Bay Intercollegiate) and
33-under for 54 holes (2015
Alister MacKenzie Invitational)
but the Waves bettered
both with a 22-under
262 on Tuesday, good for
a 52-under 800 (270-268-
262) overall. The Waves
entered the final round at
the par-71 Meadow Club
six shots behind host California
but ended up with an
11-stroke victory.
In his first college victory,
Manke became the
first player in Pepperdine
history to shoot a round
of 10-under (the previous
record was a 9-under 63).
His 61 included nine birdies,
an eagle and just one
bogey. The sophomore was
at 6-under though 14 but
eagled 15 and ended his
round with birdies on 17
and 18.
He finished with a 21-under
192 (65-66-61), bettering
the 20-under set by
Frederick Wedel at the
2014 Warrior Princeville
Makai Invitational. Manke
entered the final round in a
tie for third, two shots out
of the lead, but ended up
winning by four strokes.
Manke led all players
with 22 birdies overall. He
was the tournament’s top
player on par-4s (11-under)
and tied for the best on par-
5s (9-under).
On Monday, the Waves
also set a team record for
the best score after 36 holes
(30-under). The Waves’
marks for 54-hole team
score and 18-hole and 54-
hole individual scores also
were Alister MacKenzie
Invitational records.
Junior Clay Feagler took
fourth with an 11-under
202 (71-66-65). His final
round of 6-under included
eight birdies. He had 16
birdies over the two days.
Junior Joshua McCarthy
tied for 10th with a 7-under
206 (69-68-69). He had five
birdies Tuesday and a total
of 15 birdies over three
rounds.
CROSS COUNTRY
Plentiful PRs make Bronco
Invitational a success
The men’s cross country
team continued what’s
shaping up to be the best
season in program history
with more record-breaking
performances Saturday,
Oct. 13, at the Bronco Invitational.
Nick Heath lowered his
school record by nearly 3
seconds to finish the 8K in
24 minutes, 3.9 seconds,
and Kyle Johnson and Karl
Winter moved up to No.
2 and No. 3, respectively,
on the all-time list. The
Waves’ Top 9 men’s runners
set PRs, and all nine
now rank among the Top
15 8K runners in program
history.
The men’s team finished
second among Division I
teams and third overall,
which included victories
over West Coast Conference
rivals Loyola Marymount
and Saint Mary’s.
The Waves entered the
West Region rankings for
the first time in program
history last week at No. 13.
On the women’s side,
Abbey Meck led the Waves
for the 10th time in 10 career
races, and her personal-best
time of 21:36.9
moved her up to fifth on
the program’s all-time 6K
list. Caroline Archer (11th,
22:19.4) and Shelby White
(13th, 22:21.5) moved into
the Top 20 with their times.
Sophomore Cori Persinger
also set a PR at 23:00.3.
Maemone got the Waves
