Open Studios 2018
November 3rd and 4th
Artists at the Holliston Mill
will host their annual Open Studios
event on Saturday and Sunday,
November 3 and 4, from 11
a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
In a preamble to the open
studios weekend, a number of
the Mill’s artists will be creating
some public art on the nearby
Holliston Rail Trail. The Mill’s
history as a shoe manufacturing
company serves as inspiration for
these artist-made “Shoeprises.”
The public can expect the unexpected
and a humorous vibe.
In the week prior to and during
the open studios event, the trail
will offer some unique photo opportunities
with the hope that
social media postings of photos
will help spread the word about
Open Studios weekend.
Artists participating in the
open studios include resident artists,
as well as local guest or former
resident artists. The artists
Holliston Artist Betty Glick
“My mother was an artist, so
in a way I’ve been painting since
I was about 6,” says Holliston oil
painter Betty Glick, who became
serious about the art later in life.
“In my 30s, I became a potter,
and I did that for 25 years.
My business partner and I did a
line of high-fired functional pottery
and sold to wholesale shows.
In 1999, my father died, and for
some reason, I wanted to paint.”
Glick, who’d studied some
painting and illustrating at MassArt.,
wrapped up her pottery
business and switched mediums.
“I was 59 when I really started
considering myself an artist
painting,” she says. She and her
husband had had a house in
Spain at the time, and she began
painting landscapes from a third
floor window there. When she
came back to the states, she
sought training in technique at
the Danforth Museum, where
she studied under well-known
painter Michael Dowling.
“He was a huge influence on
me,” says Glick. “That’s what I
learned what painting was all
about.”
Painting, for Glick, is a “process
of discovery, of revealing
something that’s true about the
world in visual terms rather than
verbal ones. You can’t really explain
what a painting is about,
they’re just transcendent. It’s not
about a woman pouring milk.
It’s something much bigger than
that. The experience of deeper
truth is done in terms of color
and light and composition,” she
says.
The abstract artist, also an
amateur musician and singer,
likens appreciating paintings to
listening to music.
“You don’t ask a piece of
music to explain itself,” she says.
Glick believes Americans have
a more difficult time accepting
abstract painting than even ordinary
people anywhere in Europe.
The painter says the most
dramatic experience she ever
had with art was her encounter
with a work by American artist
Franz Kline. “He painted these
bold, black and white paintings,
and the scale! That was my first
real understanding of what abstract
painting was. After that,
I was drawn to all the abstract
expressionists. I really loved their
work.”
Although Glick has primarily
used canvas, she has recently
begun to work with small,
smooth, wood panels, nothing
more than 30”. She makes her
own gesso, like a guash, similar to
what Renaissance painters used,
from marble dust and glue.
“It makes a kind of chalky
surface, brilliant white,” she says,
excitedly.” You can scrape the
oil paint on with an old scraper,
and the white shows through. It
seems to be transparent, but it really
isn’t.”
Painting on a smaller scale
enables Glick to use more expensive,
high-quality paints in the
thick, chunky style she prefers.
She doesn’t start off painting,
necessarily, with an idea, but the
artist says her result will sometimes
be a subconscious manifestation
of something particular.
“I did this painting I just
thought was an abstract painting,”
she says. “Somebody
bought it from me, a fellow student,
and said to me, ‘Well, it’s
the World Trade Center towers.’
And it was those two towers and
I didn’t even know it! It’s because
that was in my head when I was
laying the paint down. They were
exactly the way you saw them in
those photographs. It was really
astounding.”
Glick has shown her work at
the Galatea Gallery in Boston,
as well as the Arsenal Center for
the Arts, The Amazing Things
Art Center in Natick, and at the
Boston Center for the Arts. In
addition to Open Studios, you
can see her work at www.bettyglick.com.

Artist Spotlight: Cheryl Cohen
By J.D. O’Gara
Although she has her own
studio on Woodland Street in
Holliston, mosaic artist Cheryl
Cohen will be exhibiting as a
guest artist at the Holliston Mills
Open Studios event.
“I’ve always done crafts my
entire life,” she says. “I always
thought sometday I’m going to
find one kind of art that ties together
everything I love.” Those
things, she says, included beads
and glass and rocks and shells,
she says.
Fifteen years ago, after her
sister accidentally smashed some
“magnificent plates” she’d gotten
from Morocco, she invited
Cheryl to take a mosaics class
with her.
“It was love at first class. It
really did unify all the things I
love,” says Cohen. Finally, she
had an outlet for all the supplies
she’d been gathering for years.
Cohen, who used to be an
occupational therapist in Holliston
Public Schools, says she has
found her dream job.
“This has always been a
dream retirement job, and I’ve
never worked more hours in my
life, but I love it!” she says.
Despite needing to earn a living
with her studio, Cohen says
she makes time to create a few
pieces each week.
“The majority of the time,
I push myself to make time for
the art aspect,” she says. “When
I don’t, I find I’m not having as
much fun, and that’s important.”
Making her mosaics gives
Cohen “a sense of freedom, because
I look at it that I can make
anything I want. What I love
about mosaics specifically is you
can change your mind 20 times
while you’re making a piece.”
Cohen tells the story of a
piece she began that was inspired
by an aerial view of a river.
“It decided it wanted to be a
tree,” she says. “It became a blue
tree, one of my favorite pieces.
I love it when it tells me what it
wants to be. I start with an idea,
but it never ends there. It goes on
many different trails, and following
those trails is a huge part of
the fun.”
Cohen says her work is evolving,
and she gets feedback from
craft shows about how much she
has grown. She’s recently moved
onto making a new kind of jewelry
with sterling silver bases.
“The longer I do this, the
more depth I have in terms of the
materials I supply in the studio,”
says Cohen. “I have so many
choices of color and texture and
bling. The richness of the possibilities
is even more endless than
it was before. In terms of how my
own art has grown,
I’m always taking classes, and
I’m always learning more. What
I’ve learned is how you can’t do
it wrong. Art is art. That’s what
makes it so great.”
Artist Spotlight: Stevie Leigh Andrascik
Stevie Leigh, originally from
upstate New York, has been sewing
since she was 11. She studied
fashion design in New York
city, which she says wasn’t a huge
jump to the city to attend school.
“I’m an environmentalist in
general, always someone who
made my own stuff and reused,
recycled. Sustainability really
piqued my interest.”
Fashion, she learned was one
of the most polluting industries.
“It’s wasteful. Extra dye, all
that water runoff, the water used
in making the materials even
when you cut the fabric just making
a t-shirt. All of that extra fabric
they just throw away. Between
five and 10% of good material is
just gone,” she says.
The world we live in, says Stevie
Leigh, seems to be moving in
a direction in which people are
“thinking about the world in general,
like H&M and their ‘conscience’
line.”
Following graduation, Stevie
Leigh started working in a Metrowest
Mass. tailor shop.
“All this good denim goes
to waste. We just throw it out,”
she says. Starting last year, she
began to design clothing using
the wasted material. “I make a
whole bunch of apparel out of
denim scraps that would have
been thrown away,” she says.
The Hopkinton resident estimates
she saves about 20 lbs. of
denim from the shop in which
she works and a few others in the
area.
Her style is to dive into her
work.
“I’m not someone who
sketches a lot. I like to see the
material, play with the material,
work with it in 3D from a big bag
of denim scraps,” she says. “I’m
very much inspired by music in
general, and I kind of have a
little bit of a punk look, with distressed
denim, band t-shirts and
logos and stuff. They’re one of
a kind. No one else is going to
have them, and they’re genderless,
good for a man or a woman,
multifunctional, and most things
are reversible as well.”
Stevie Leigh says she doesn’t
bother to follow too many designers,
but she looks around at
current trends. Still, she says, “I
kind of just go my own way all
the time, regardless. I’ve always
been someone who stands out.”
Andrascik’s work is functional,
wearable art, she says, something
you interact with every day.
“There’s a lot that goes into
making a garment, just starting
with finding the right material,”
she says. For her, she must first
sew scraps together to make usable
material. “Each square is
probably 4-5 inches, she says, “so
you need many of those to fit a
body. I catch them all together to
make my fabric.”
Stevie Leigh sometimes takes
the fabric right to the dress form,
or she makes paper designs, creating
the bodice, the sleeves, the
collar. Then she must sew it together
and add such items as zippers,
pockets, and buttons.
“There are many steps to
make custom design like I do,”
she says. “I really like just being
creative and just listening to
whatever I want to express.”
the Rose Kennedy Greenway
in Boston. You can find her at
Your Money, Your Independence
HSA & HDHP -
Alphabet Soup
of Work Benefits
Fall brings football, hearty
soups and dreaded acronyms in
open enrollment for work benefits.
Americans know the importance
of medical coverage and
retirement programs, yet less
than 50% eligible participate in
the triple tax advantages associated
with saving for health care
expenses through a health savings
account, or HSA.
What are HSAs?
Introduced through the Medicare
Modernization Act of 2003,
HSAs are tax-exempt savings
plans paired with a high-deductible
health plan (HDHP) meeting
certain criteria. For 2019,
this means individual coverage
at least $1,350 in annual deductible
and no more than $6,750 in
annual out-of-pocket expenses.
Family coverage is $2,700 and
$13,500, respectfully.
Key HSA Facts
• In 2019, an individual can
contribute $3,500 and a
family up to $7,000.
• If age 55 or older, you
can contribute additional
$1,000.
• Contributions are taken out
pre-tax or tax-deductible, if
self-employed.
• No federal taxes on money
spent on qualified health
care expenses.
• Interest or other capital
earnings from the account
grow tax-free.
Thus, unlike any other taxadvantaged
savings plan, the
HSA can offer “triple tax benefits”:
tax-free contributions,
tax-free earnings, and tax-free
distributions.
Enrollments Below 50%
Driven by companies shifting
costs onto employees and individuals
seeking to control premiums,
HDHP enrollments in
private insurance for those under
age 65 has risen since 2010 from
25.3% to 47.0% through March
2018 per the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention. Yet, less
than half (45.8%) participate in
a HSA. Surprising, given many
employers now contribute funds
to incentivize employees to enroll.
Best Practice
Consider contributing at least
your annual deductible each year
with a 4-year goal to accumulate
a HSA balance exceeding annual
out-of-pocket expenses. Remember,
medical expenses happen
and funds will be used, so be flexible
with your plan.
If You Leave
Keefe Tech Senior to Be Featured on CBS for
Award-Winning App
Keefe Regional Technical
School senior Daniel Quackenbush
of Framingham was recently
interviewed by WBZ CBS
Channel 4’s Kate Merrill about
his award-winning “What The
Fish” app.
Quackenbush, a student in
Keefe’s Programming and Web
Development CTE program,
created and developed the app in
his Entrepreneurship class during
the 2017-2018 school year.
John’s
family owned and operated for 45 years
He presented his concept at the
NFTE New England Regional
Business Plan competition in
May, where he won the first place
aims to provide students with
the ability to thrive in the innovation
economy, no matter what
path they choose. The Network
(NFTE) is an internationally recognized
nonprofit that activates
the entrepreneurial mindset in
young people. NFTE’s Entrepreneurship
Pathway program
integrates the development of
the entrepreneurial mindset with
academic and industry skills to
ensure that all NFTE youth are
career-ready.
Quackenbush’s “What The
Fish” app identifies types of fish
and provides information about
each species. “My family and I
were out fishing on Cape Cod,
and we kept catching these unfamiliar-looking
fish. We didn’t
have a way to identify them at
the time, so it got me thinking
that I could use my knowledge
to create an app that would solve
that problem,” Quackenbush explained.
“This project is much bigger
than anything I’ve worked on before,
so having time to work on
it both in my CTE program and
my entrepreneurship class has
been enormously helpful,” said
Quackenbush. “Additionally, the
education I’ve received in my entrepreneurship
class and the assistance
from my CTE class has
been invaluable.”
According to Keefe Tech Entrepreneurship
teacher Matthew
Warren, his class curriculum
teaches 21st century skills including
collaboration, problem solving,
creativity, communications
and being socially responsible.
“The NFTE program has
been at Keefe for about 12 years
and has been an amazing opportunity
for students who want to
achieve above and beyond what
is taught in the classroom. Over
the course of the school year,
students create and assemble a
business plan, and then present
Daniel Quackenbush of Framingham, a Keefe Technical School
their groups as well as be dropoff
With Cooler Temps, MetroWest Company Offers Indoor
Air Quality Advice
Nicholson Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning
Says Simple Steps Can Be Very Effective
Nicholson Plumbing, Heating
& Air Conditioning, a familyowned
home service company
and recipient of the Angie’s List
Super Service Award for the
eighth year in a row, is offering
advice to Boston-area homeowners
looking to improve the indoor
air quality of their home or combat
the possible development of
mold during a damp fall season.
“Indoor air quality can be
affected by a number of things,
from pollen to cat dander to
mold,” said Mike Nicholson,
owner of Nicholson Plumbing,
Heating, & Air Conditioning.
APARTMENTS FOR RENT
Move In!
“Once the weather starts turning
cooler, homeowners spend
more and more time indoors. If
they aren’t careful, the air they’re
breathing can become stale and
full of pollutants.”
One thing Nicholson suggests
might be a bit surprising to some
homeowners: Opening windows.
“There are certain times of
year that are perfect for opening
a home’s window: spring and
fall,” Nicholson said. “Summer
and winter temperatures can be
too extreme, but opening windows
in the fall allows fresh air to
circulate throughout the home.
(3) two bedroom units all with BRAND NEW everything
Email inquiries to wjr358@gmail.com and come look now
to save your space as these 3 units will rent quickly.
All units are $2,500/month plus utilities.
Using a ceiling fan helps, too.”
Nicholson also stresses regular
cleaning. While many may think
of spring as the prime time to
clean, Nicholson says cleaning
is vital in the fall, especially once
the house is closed up in winter.
A professional can help when it
comes to cleaning areas like air
ducts. He also urges homeowners
to give blankets and comforters
that have been stored away for
the summer a fresh wash before
using.
“Cleaning not only helps with
air quality, but it can help locate
existing issues before they become
major or costly repairs,”
Nicholson said. “Air ducts can
harbor mold, as can the areas
near your pipes. Homeowners
should stay on top of these potential
issues, and all it takes is a
little preventative care.”
Nicholson encourages homeowners
to install humidifiers and
schedule a tune-up for their heating
and cooling system. In fact,
if not properly maintained, an
HVAC system can develop moisture
and mold, releasing harmful
spores into the home.
“Nothing will help indoor air
quality as much as a maintained
heating and cooling system,”
Nicholson said. “Your HVAC
system is responsible for circulating
the air throughout your entire
home, so you want to make sure
the air it’s pushing out is clean.
Check your filters at least once a
month, and get them replaced if
they’re dirty.”
DiPietro, at Upper Town Hall on
Friday and Saturday, November
9th and 10th, and Friday, Saturday
and Sunday, November 16th
, 17th and 18th, with a special
matinee performance at 4 p.m.
on the final day.
Tickets for the show, in advance,
are $15 adults and $18
students and seniors; or $17 and
$20 at the door.
“The play is absolutely adorable,”
says Director Karen Dinehart.
“It’s heartwarming. It’s
funny, and it stays with you after
you see it.” Dinehart saw the play
about six years ago. “I sat in the
front row and I cried, I laughed.”
The show centers around the
character of “Nick,” played by
Michael LaChance, of Grafton,
and his relationship with his two
sets of Italian grandparents. All
of them live in Hoboken, NJ,
and Nick visits his grandparents
every Sunday. Then, he comes to
give them the bad news that he’s
moving away to his dream job in
Seattle.
“Nick’s very career-driven,
and that’s why he’s moving away,
for a job,” says Dinehart. “He
loves his family, loves his grandparents,
but needs to make his
way in the world. He’s trying
to reconcile that, gets very frustrated
with them, but adores
them at the same time.”
Dinehart says the Washington
Street Players was able to find
four good actors who could believably
play the grandparents’
roles.
The four grandparents include:
“Frank,” played by Charlie
Haskins, of Woonsocket, RI.
“Frank is an immigrant of Italy,
who came over when he was a
teenager,” says Dinehart. “His
father sent him to America on
his own, so he’s a blue collar takecare-of-your-family,
stoic kind of
guy.”
Frank’s wife, “Aida,” is played
by Terry Murphy, of Ashland.
“Aida is a stay-at-home, quintessential
cook-until-you-drop
Italian grandmother. She’s constantly
trying to solve problems
with food,” says the director.
The other set of Italian grandparents
is a flamboyant, loud
couple, “Nunzio” and “Emma.”
Mind
Performers rehearse for the Washington Street Players’ upcoming
production of Over the River and through the Woods, to be performed
November 9-18, with a special Sunday matinee performance.
Nunzio is played by Larry
Lickteigh, of Groton, and his
wife Emma, who is religious and
likes to travel, is played by Laura
Steele, of Milford.
Chrissy Petersen, of Medway
(also a music teacher in Holliston),
stars in a supporting role as
“Caitlin O’Hare.”
“It’s a comedy with some
heartstrings being pulled at the
same time, but there are many,
many laughs,” says Dinehart.
She adds that the play is not very
long, just about two hours if you
include intermission.
MASSAGE HEALS YOU
While we all feel compelled
to be busy and feel connected,
it is necessary to occasionally get
away from the stresses of daily
life. Along with meditation,
endorphin-inducing exercise,
and a steam bath or sauna, few
things help to reduce stress more
than massage. This “laying of
the hands” is scientifically proven
to ease pain, reduce swelling,
promote flexibility (by stretching
and relaxing muscles), flush the
by-products of muscular activity
(lactic and pyruvic acids) from
tired muscles, and break up
fibrous tissues and loosen stiff
joints. If you exercise regularly,
a deep-tissue massage will help
speed recovery and improve
your stamina. Even if you do
not have the time to exercise
regularly, massage can help you
keep in tune with your body and
improve flexibility.
Even a single massage session
has been shown to significantly
lower heart rate, cortisol and
insulin levels - all of which help
reduce daily stress. One of the
telltale signs of anxiety and
stress is constricted breathing.
Massage can play an important
role in relieving respiratory
issues and training the body
how to relax. At MACMED
SPA SALON & MEDICAL,
our team of professionals offers
massages that will leave you
feeling relaxed and ready to take
on all that life throws at you!
We also offer Cranio Sacral,
Lomi Lomi and Thai massage.
Social Security Fast-Tracks Decisions for
People with Severe Disabilities
Agency Expands Compassionate
Allowance List
Nancy A. Berryhill, Acting
Commissioner of Social Security,
today announced five new Compassionate
Allowance conditions:
Fibrolamellar Cancer, Megacystis
Microcolon Intestinal Hypoperistalsis
Syndrome (MMIHS),
Megalencephaly Capillary Malformation
Syndrome (MCAP),
Superficial Siderosis of the
Central Nervous System, and
Tetrasomy 18p. Compassionate
Allowances is a program to
quickly identify medical conditions
and serious diseases that
meet Social Security’s standards
for disability benefits.
“For nearly a decade, the
Compassionate Allowance list
has helped us identify and fasttrack
cases where individuals
have diseases that are most likely
to be approved for disability
benefits,” said Acting Commissioner
Berryhill. “Social Security
is committed to ensuring Americans
with qualifying disabilities
quickly receive the benefits they
need.”
The Compassionate Allowances
program identifies claims
where the applicant’s disease or
condition clearly meets Social
Security’s statutory standard for
disability. Due to the severe nature
of many of these conditions,
these claims are often allowed
based on medical confirmation
of the diagnosis alone. To date,
over 500,000 people with serious
disabilities have been approved
through this fast-track policycompliant
disability process. The
list has grown to a total of 233
conditions, including diseases
such as pancreatic cancer, amyotrophic
lateral sclerosis (ALS),
and acute leukemia.
the program, including a list of
Holliston’s New Community Action Fund
Emergency Relief and Community
Support in Holliston
A new community support
group is now in operation in
Holliston. The Holliston Community
Action Fund (HCAF)
was established this month by
concerned residents – neighbors
who want to help neighbors in
immediate and urgent need.
The overall intent of HCAF is
to allow the community to unite
in a collective effort to help those
who are less fortunate and to support
the many ways that make
Holliston a better place to live for
all. An initial few emergency assistance
grants in Holliston have
already been given, providing
timely and opportune financial
support grants to Holliston residents
in need of assistance due to
unforeseen and unfortunate circumstances.
A recent example of
local Community Action Funds
assisting in times of need is the
gas explosions and fires in the
Merrimack Valley – the Essex
County Community Foundation
and the Greater Lawrence Community
Action Fund were ready
to quickly collect donations and
provide immediate assistance to
affected families in Lawrence,
Andover and North Andover.
community emergency action
funds.
In addition to emergency assistance
grants, HCAF has two
other objectives. The non-profit
will also be supporting community
betterment by providing
support to organizations or
projects that benefit the town
of Holliston and its surrounding
neighborhoods through improvements
or enhancements in safety,
citizenship, education, community
spaces and other features
of a strong town. In addition to
community betterment, there
will be a special student division
tasked to organize, plan, staff
and run events that directly support
the youth of the community.
This division will provide a way
to get the teen youth involved in
the community and is open to
all children age 12-22. A youth
leadership team will spearhead
projects designated for students
and will develop programs with
assistance and consultation with
the office of Holliston Youth and
Family Services and the Holliston
Public Schools.
Originally established a few
years ago under the Holliston
Business Association, the Community
Action Fund is now an
official public charity of Massachusetts,
with a broadened
mission to work with Holliston’s
Department of Youth and Family
Services to identify and fulfill
emergency assistance requests.
Board members of the new
HCAF include local business
owners and residents.
Inquiries regarding emergency
assistance grants can be
made at the office of Holliston
Youth and Family Services, Jaclyn
Winer, director, (winerj@holliston.k12.ma.us)
or call the office
at (508) 429-0620. A needs determination
would be made, followed
by an intake interview and
recovery plan.
Residents interested in supporting
the Holliston Community
Action Fund by donating
and/or volunteering may contact
Exsultet! to Kick Off December
with Concert
Kicks Off 2018-2019
Season, Its 6th
Exsultet!, the premiere Metrowest
women’s ensemble,
today offered a sneak peak of its
sixth season of choral concerts.
On December 1st in a show entitled
“Sing Heigh-Ho! Unto the
Green Holly!” at First Congregational
Church in Holliston, they
will perform Christmas and Hanukkah
favorites as well as songs
celebrating the winter solstice.
Featured will be the premiere of
“Aspects of Yule,” a piece composed
for Exsultet by local composer
Eva Kendrick. Jubilate,
Exsultet’s youth choir featuring
the voices of children in grades
four through eight, will also be
performing under the direction
of Holliston teacher Chrissy Petersen.
On March 2, 2019, Exsultet!
celebrates the elements – earth,
wind, and fire – in “We Are the
Stars Which Sing” at the Church
of Christ in Millis. The final concert
of the season will be on May
18, 2019, when Exsultet and Jubilate
revel in songs about the
sea in “With Ships the Sea Was
Sprinkled Far and Nigh.”
Planning for a new season
begins in late May immediately
after the close of the last concert.
Artistic Director Richard Larraga
garners themes from various
sources including books, TV,
and movies. For example, for the
May concert, he drew his inspiration
from Star Trek IV: The
Voyage Home when Kirk says,
“The sea is cold but the sea contains
the hottest blood of all,”
which is taken from the D.H.
Lawrence poem Whales Weep
Not. From there, he spends the
summer hours looking for music
to fit the theme.
Exsultet! brings together a
younger generation of women
who live busy lives balancing
work and family but feel compelled
to make time for music.
“For many of the ladies, Exsultet
is the activity they do for themselves.
They bond over their love
of music, but also share the issues
and concerns of their daily
lives with one another. Over the
course of the past seasons, I’ve
seen deep friendships grow,”
notes Larraga.
Please go to www.exsultet.us
to learn more about how to purchase
advance tickets.
Jubilate! An Extension of the
Mission Exsultet!
by J.D. O’Gara
“Education is really an important
part of Exsultet’s mission,”
says the elite women’s chorus
director Richard A.A. Larraga.
“We have a number of music
teachers in the group that want
to pass on training and music
theory.”
Jubilate!, now a group of 13
young singers in grades 4-7 from
Holliston, Medway and Millis,
has just entered its second
season. The group will perform
in the upcoming December 1st
Solstice celebration by Exsultet!,
Sing heigh-ho! Unto the Green
Holly!
“(Jubilate’s) conductor is
Chrissy Petersonk who teaches
in the Holliston Public Schools,”
says Larraga. “We have a very
excited and focused group. They
really love to sing, and they love
rehearsals, and their learning
their music very well.”
The children are trained in
music reading, says Larraga,
learning solfege
They learn training in music
reading using solfege, a method
of teaching where they learn
hand positions with a pitch. “It’s
a way to learn sight reading,”
says Larraga. “Later on, when
someone gives them a piece of
music, they can read it. It’s different
for singers than instrumental.”
In the future, Larraga envisions
Jubilate! performing in its
own concerts, but for now, the
youth group sings in two of three
of the Exsultet! season.
Community Helping
LightUp Holliston this Holiday
Funds Replenished for Holiday Lights
The community volunteer
effort to light up the town of
Holliston this holiday season
has been a success! Last month,
LightUp, Holliston launched a
GoFundMe campaign in order
to raise money for holiday
white lights at the police station,
stretching past town hall,
and ending at downtown center
just at the Fiske’s and Superette
corner. The group “took a page
from the Friends of Holliston
Trails and Holliston in Bloom”
in the downtown pride initiative.
For nearly two decades,
the Holliston Lions Club have
funded the lighting along with
volunteering to setup and take
down the lights each year. However,
the original lights had depleted
and, for the past few years,
the program has been in dire
need of funding to replenish and
expand the downtown lighting.
“With our GoFundMe Page
donations and donations from
Middlesex Savings Bank, Marigold
Project, & Holliston Alumni
Group, we surpassed our $5K
goal,” writes volunteer Ed Daniels,
a member of the lighting
committee and this year’s Holliston
Lions President.
Part of the LightUp Holliston
campaign will include special
holiday lights at Blair Square at
the head of the Rail Trail. Plans
are for a lighting ceremony at
town hall on Saturday, November
24 during the Holliston Holiday
stroll.
Brain Injury Association
Walk & Roll Raises $26K
This year’s annual Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts’
Annual Walk & Roll was a huge success,
taking place at Framingham State University.
280 individuals raised $26,000 for the association!
Holliston Volleyball Makes Strides this Season
By Christopher Tremblay,
Staff Sports Writer
Last fall, under first year varsity
head coach Anneliese Harrison,
Holliston found it rough
going on the volleyball court.
The Panthers were only able to
secure five wins while losing 12
other contests. Now in her second
year, Harrison seems to have
coaching down, and her girls
are showing that on the court.
Through the early part of the
season the Panthers are enjoying
their best start in some time, posting
a 6-2 record.
“Last year was not a great
season,” the Holliston Coach
said. “Not only was it my first
year as head coach, our gym was
being redone, so we had to share
space with the middle school at
their gym, we had to switch a few
of our opening home games to
road games – it was definitely a
rebuilding year.”
In addition to having already
won more games than all of last
year through the first half of the
season, Holliston has shown they
are not a team to be taken lightly.
The Panthers have already defeated
Medfield and Westwood
3-0 in the early goings. The last
time Holliston defeated Westwood
was in 2010, Harrison’s
senior year, which was also the
last time the Panthers graced the
Holliston volleyball took a beating last year, but with all the players opting to participate in club play, the
team has improved so much they’ve already beat last year’s scores.
Division 2 Central Tournament.
As for the Medfield victory could
possibly be the first. Athletic Director
Matt Baker was only able
to find records back as far as
2007, but said it most likely went
back further than that.
One of the big reasons the
Holliston volleyball team has
been winning more than losing
this fall is that the girls on the
team all decided to play club ball
so that they were ready attitude
and skill wise when the season
opened.
Leading the Panthers onto
the court are the senior captains
in libero Anna Koeva, rightside
hitter Alison Edwards and
the team’s ultimate power hitter
Emily Howland.
Not only has the Coach seen
some much-improved play and
consistency on the court, the girls
are scoring more and playing
very smart volleyball, even when
out of position.
While the seniors are pushing
the squad to perfection, two
underclassmen are making a
big statement for the Panthers;
freshman outside hitter Collette
Salem and sophomore Sophia
LiRicco, who plays the back row.
“Collette is an all-round player
that can play the front as well as
the back. She has it all skill-wise
and is probably the most powerful
hitter and server on the team
as well as a great passer,” Harrison
said. “Sophia, will most likely
become our libero next season
after Anna graduates. She is always
on the floor and brings a
positive attitude, which is huge.”
One athlete who has opened
the coach’s eyes during the first
half has been junior middle hitter
Katie Randlett. According to the
Coach, the junior has improved
drastically since last season and
has become very smart on the
court; she knows how to pick her
spots and has been doing it on a
HOUSE
MUFFIN
CAFE
consistent basis.
Coming into the season, Harrison
had two goals: one to advance
into the tournament for
the first time in over a decade
and two to have the girls ready
mentally to play good volleyball.
With six wins already in their
possession, the Panther are only
a handful of wins away from
grabbing a tournament spot and
the way they’ve been playing so
far they have emerged mentally
tough.
“With all the issues surrounding
us, last year didn’t get off to
• Open Daily
• Bakery with Fresh Muffins/Pastries
• Breakfast and Lunch Sandwiches
• Best Blueberry Muffins Since Jordan Marsh
H
H
a good start, and we had a hole
to climb out of, and, when we
started to do just that, we couldn’t
maintain it,” the coach said. “We
need to stay mentally tough and
be able to finish.”
Unless disaster hits, it looks
optimistic that the Panthers
should be making their way into
the Division 2 Central Volleyball
Tournament later this fall. Harrison
not only expects her girls
to come ready to play night after
night, but she is expecting them
to go deep into the tournament.
Holliston’s Girls Soccer Captains Focus on Tournament Success
By KEN HAMWEY, Staff
Sports Writer
Melanie Colman and Alex
Panaggio know what to expect
when the Holliston girls’ soccer
team starts tournament action
this month.
As senior captains, they’ve
played key roles on both sides of
the ball for the Panthers, who’ve
had a successful 2018 campaign
that includes a 9-1 record at Local
Town Pages deadline.
Both are small but that’s deceptive
because the tandem
has been dynamic. Colman is a
5-foot-1 goalie and Panaggio is
a 5-foot striker and each has a
telling statistic that defines them.
Colman has a goals-against average
of 0.35 and Panaggio has
eight goals and nine assists.
But, put statistics and records
aside, because the duo is intensely
focused on helping the Panthers
advance farther than last year
when they bowed to Medway in
the second round of the playoffs.
“We’ve got to focus on what’s
on our plate,’’ said Panaggio,
who was the team’s MVP and
offensive player of the year as
a freshman. “And, we can’t be
overconfident. We’ve got experience
(12 seniors) and we’ve
added some key freshmen. We
can be successful because we
have talented and skilled players
and some of them have been underestimated.’’
Colman, who was Holliston’s
MVP last season, is a firm believer
that playing within one’s
ability is paramount. “We can’t
try to do too much,’’ she emphasized.
“We’ve got to focus on
what we can control. It’s realistic
to think we can advance deep
into the tourney but we must all
be on the same page and play
one half at a time.’’
Colman and Panaggio know
the keys for success — on the field
and in the classroom. They’re
honor students who will attend
top-notch colleges and one will
play on scholarship and the other
with an attractive financial aid
package. Panaggio committed
to Division 1 Syracuse as a freshman
to play soccer and Colman
will attend Simmons College, a
Division 3 school, where she’ll
Alex Panaggio, left, and Melanie Colman are captains of the Holliston
girls soccer team. Both have been integral to the team’s success this
year.
play basketball. Panaggio earned
a scholarship and Colman will
receive financial aid.
What makes the senior captains
so dynamic are their athletic
strengths. And, coach Brielle
Chadsey is acutely aware of
those attributes.
“Melanie is a natural athlete
who’s quick, has great hands,
and lots of grit and toughness,’’
Chadsey said. “She’s also agile
and can jump. Alex is a natural
goal-scorer who wants the ball
in key situations. She’s got a high
soccer IQ, reads the play well
and is mentally tough. Both are
excellent captains who lead by
example and by being vocal.’’
Panaggio has been a fouryear
starter and Colman has
been the starting goalie for the
last two years. “I like playing
striker, because scoring is fun,’’
Panaggio said. “I rely on a hard,
fast shot, especially from the
corner.’’ Colman likes her position
because she doesn’t have to
rely on foot skills. “I chose to be
a goalie because my foot skills
aren’t anything special,’’ she
said. “However, it’s an exciting
position because you see the entire
field, and you’ve got to know
where everyone is. There’s pressure,
but I thrive on it. It doesn’t
faze me.’’
Panaggio’s best game was her
first appearance as a freshman.
Rival Medway was the opponent
in a night game and the outcome
couldn’t have been better. “I assisted
on a goal by Emma Guccione
late in the second half and
we won, 1-0,’’ Panaggio recalled.
“That was also my top thrill in
soccer. Medway’s been the Tri
Valley League champ for the last
three years.’’
Colman’s best game also has
a Medway flavor. It occurred last
year when she shut out the Mustangs,
2-0. “I had 10 shutouts last
year and that was one of them,’’
she noted. “I made a lot of saves
in that game and to beat a rival
like Medway was a big achievement.’’
Both captains know that tourney
success depends on major
contributions from all of their
teammates and the coaching
staff. Panaggio and Colman, who
are also encouraging leaders,
are bullish on Holliston’s other
three captains — Emily Clapper,
Gabby Ramirez-Brodeur, and
Elisabeth Maki — and junior
Sidney Brucato.
“Emily is such a consistent
defender,’’ Panaggio said. “She’s
like a brick wall, preventing a lot
of goals. Gabby sets up plays and
is solid in transition in midfield,
and Sidney is versatile, able to
play forward or fullback. She’s
aggressive to the ball.’’
Colman concurs and likes
the way Maki plays center back:
“Elisabeth is a TVL all-star who
has lots of ability and talent.
She’s a great defender.’’
Colman and Panaggio, who’ll
be competing in her fourth
straight tourney, also have confidence
in their coach. “Coach
Chadsey is motivating, adjusts
well and is a strong strategic
planner,’’ Panaggio noted. Colman
agrees. “Coach Chadsey is
easy to talk with, and she knows
the sport so well. And, she does
a great job motivating players.’’
Colman, who also is a captain
in basketball, averaged eight
points last year as the Panthers’
point guard. Panaggio has made
soccer her only sport. She started
playing it at age seven and she’s
been competing at the club level
for 10 years.
Both captains, whose competitive
philosophies focus on reaching
their potential and enjoying
their athletic endeavors, believe
that winning will follow if hard
work enters the formula. They
also have learned some valuable
life lessons from soccer.
“I was told I was too short
to play sports,’’ Colman noted.
“Well, I’ve played basketball and
soccer, so I don’t listen to those
who say I can’t do something.
I’ve learned that hard work is
important, and that good things
happen if you strive to be your
best. Few thought I could start in
goal and post 10 shutouts in my
first year as a starter.’’
Panaggio says she’s matured
by playing sports. “I organize my
time better, and I’ve developed
some quality relationships,’’ she
emphasized.
Now, the time has arrived
for both girls and for Holliston’s
squad to battle in the playoffs. As
Panaggio says: “We’ll see teams
that we have no idea about. But,
many of the players, especially
the seniors, have tourney experience
and we’ll know what to
expect.’’
Melanie Colman and Alex
Panaggio have been outstanding
competitors and they’re solid
representatives of what makes
the Holliston girls soccer team
an exceptional group.
Congregational Church, 725
Washington Street, Holliston.
“Musically, each choir will
perform on their own, and in
the end, we perform a joint piece
together. I fashion some readings
and prayers, with the concept of
Thanksgiving,” says Larraga.
Participating congregations
this year will include:
• Christ the King Lutheran
Church
• St. Michael’s Episcopal
Temple Beth Torah led the service.
Larraga’s chancel choir will
be performing, as will Exsultet!,
