Immediately after our field trip to the police station on
Wednesday, May 16, Alora’s mother, Janice, experienced
a medical emergency. She is 18 weeks pregnant and
had been experiencing lightheadedness and being
over-heated. Following the field trip, she started feeling
worse. As she sat in her car trying to cool down, her
blood sugar and blood pressure dropped and her vision
went out. She told her daughter that she needed help.
Without leaving her mother, she called to me (I was
waiting with the rest of the Scouts to be picked up by
their parents) that she needed help immediately. The
other parent that was with me, Krystal Potrebko (a
registered nurse) rushed to her side, saw her condition,
and told me to call 911. Lake County Fire and Rescue
responded, checked her out and determined she
needed to go to the emergency room immediately.
During all this time, Alora remained calm and
helpful. Janice’s condition was serious and required
hospitalization. The outcome would have been severe
without the immediate assistance by the Daisy Scout.
Her calm, focused response to the emergency reflected
Girl Scout Guidelines: 1) assist victim, 2) call for help, 3)
stay with victim, 4) remain calm, 5) direct rescuers to
victim to help, 6) assist rescuers as needed. Recognition
of this Daisy Scout reflects well upon the girl, her
Leadership, Training, and Girl Scouts USA.
I truly believe this a Daisy who demonstrated
all the I I truly believe this a Daisy who
demonstrated all the qualities of an exemplary
Girl Scout. Second, Janice and the baby are
doing better. Her doctor diagnosed her with
an electrolyte imbalance and she will need to
consume strictly Gatorade and Pedialite for the
rest of her pregnancy.
