The warriors, wearing not much more
than a loin cloth and a few feathers, paddle
and chant past the waiting crowds who are
poised ready with their cameras.
The river they paddle up comes from the
sacred Fairy Spring that releases 24 million
litres of pure spring water every day.
Visitors are then lead up to the revealing of
the hangi food which has been cooking
in a pit for around 4 hours. The food
cooked in this pit includes chicken,
lamb, white potato, sweet potato and a
special stuffing mixture which adds flavour to
the hangi meal. This food then heads to the
kitchen where it is prepared ready for dinner
service. Once you have taken your photos of
the hangi you are then lead into the semioutdoor
stage for the cultural show.
The outdoor stage has recreated traditional
Maori huts and food stores and has a natural
bush setting, complete with burning log fires
to keep the scantily-dressed performers warm
(especially on cooler nights).
