Previously known as French’s Building built
in 1905, the building has housed a number
of businesses over the years, these include
French & Co. (Grocers/Merchants); Hitchen &
Johnstone a draper/wool/needlework shop;
Clarken Ltd chandlers; A.T. Coates Bookseller
to 1943; McLeods Bookstore 1943, Heidi’s
Cafe and Patisserie, and of course Hennessey’s
Irish Bar which first opened in 2002 with a
Backpackers that was upstairs.
Today, Hennessy’s Irish Bar is one of
New Zealand’s favourite Irish bars, right in
the heart of Rotorua City centre.
Totally rebuilt in 2016 after the building
failed earthquake prone building assessment,
Hennessy’s is a beautifully designed pub, in the
truly Irish tradition with spacious booths and
hidden-away private tables.
The menu features a range of hearty pub
favourites and is fondly known for serving
Rotorua’s favourite Pub food, including
traditional fare like mussels, lamb shanks and
bangers & mash, steaks and stews, supported
by burgers, sandwiches and fresh salads and
many more dishes in their extensive menu.
Hennessy’s has received the prestigious BEER
MASTERS AWARD every year they have been
operating; an award that recognises excellence
in presentation of their tap beers and service. q
A popular choice is the Irish Stew with
mash and the Seafood Chowder.
The John Dory Fish & Chips with
salad is fresh and delicious.
