I OPINION I 3
By JESSICA MESZAROS
This week, Mid Rivers Newsmagazine
celebrates Veteran’s Day by talking with
Vietnam War veteran George Newell, who
also is president of Chapter 458 of the
Vietnam Veterans of America, covering St.
Charles County. He is an active member
of many local veterans’ organizations and
has over 25 years of experience in veterans’
advocacy. Currently, he is working to
re-establish the Assistance League at the
St. Louis Veterans Home. In 1967, after
studying horticulture at the University of
Missouri, George enlisted in the military
and served in multiple positions. He was
assigned to the 4th Infantry Division in
Vietnam in 1969. Today, he resides near
the city of St. Peters with his wife, Pat.
What is the hardest lesson you’ve learned?
I guess the hardest lesson is to keep motivated
when there are people around you
who aren’t motivated. You’ve got to try
and get people interested in accomplishing
things, although there just seems to be a
lot of people that aren’t motivated to do
anything ... It takes a team to get the job
done. It’s not about one person ... I’ve been
involved in a lot of leadership positions. I
was a chapter president, then I became a
leader in the VFW Post, and eventually, the
VFW District. I was state president of the
Vietnam Veterans of America for years …
It also led me to a group called the Missouri
Association of Veterans Organizations
[where he served as chair].
What’s the best thing to happen today?
I got to go to lunch with some of my
peers. The Vietnam Veterans Chapter 458
had their monthly luncheon. There were
probably 20 veterans and their spouses.
We had lunch together, talked about what’s
going on, just some personal things. We
also talked about all the things coming up
in the next few weeks ... We have a lot of
activities going on.
If you could call yourself past or present,
when would you call, what would you say?
Wow. There are a lot of options there. I
guess when I got out of the service is when I
would call myself. I would have motivated
myself to do some things a little sooner. I
spent several years bouncing around before
I actually got into teaching. I probably
would have gotten myself more involved
in some things outside my personal life ... I
would have dived more into the mainstream
George Newell with his wife, Pat
a little quicker than I did, but it was a transition
for me. Now, if you’re in the military,
you get out and you do this three-month
transition and they have classes. My transition
was that I left Vietnam and 98 hours
later I was back in St. Louis. I immediately
got an upper respiratory infection and was
sick for about a month. It was a transition
from eating sea rations and being confined,
basically, to just one location, and then
being back in real life.
What makes a good life?
For me, it’s family. I grew up in a family
that was very supportive. After I met my
wife, we adopted two daughters ... Then,
we had a biological child. Watching the
girls ... grow up was important. Now, I
have grandchildren. We spend a lot of our
time going to soccer and softball games.
Quite a few of them have been involved in
dance, so we’ve been to recitals and competitions.
Family is very important. I’ve
also been fortunate because my brother
and two sisters live in the area, so we get
together occasionally. That’s my primary
focus. Secondly, are the veterans’ activities,
which take a lot of time.
What are three interesting facts about you?
One thing most of my peers don’t know
is that I’m a genealogist. I’ve been studying
my family history for about 40 years. I joined
a genealogical society when I got out of the
service and I’ve learned a lot of history. One
of my ancestors was one of the first settlers of
St. Louis in 1764. They were French-Canadian
and came from across the shore ... Most
of the people I work with in veterans’ groups
also don’t know about my horticulture background.
I did that very intensely for probably
50 years ... The third thing is that, at one time
in my life, my family did a lot of camping
and boating ... which was pretty primitive
compared to what they call camping now.
MID RIVERS NEWSMAGAZINE
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
In regard to global warning
To the Editor:
In response to Lucinda Towell’s letter
about global warming [“Job Well Done,”
Mid Rivers Newsmagazine, Oct. 24], yes,
there is something individuals can do.
Carbon appears naturally in the soil. If
we plant trees or grasses or ground covers,
such as clover or ivy, we prevent carbon
from escaping into the atmosphere.
Arbor Day and the British Queen’s Commonwealth
Canopy Project are just two of
the organizations encouraging more plantings.
Most of us can do something, even
in a small way, to take part in this project.
So, do not despair. Just plant something
or encourage more plantings in parks and
open spaces.
Catherine Cummings
Protecting Missouri families
To the Editor:
In the midst of a contentious election, it
sometimes feels like there is nothing we
can all agree on. But I’d like to offer one
issue that leaves little room for debate:
protecting Missouri families. And the first
step we can take towards this goal is doing
more to keep guns out of the hands of
domestic abusers.
Did you know that, in an average month,
50 American women are shot to death by
an intimate partner, and many more are
injured? And women in the U.S. are 16
times more likely to be killed with guns
than women in other developed countries.
Domestic violence often claims the lives
of victims outside of the abusive relationship,
including family members, friends,
law enforcement officers and total strangers.
When American children and teens are
killed with guns, 60 percent are homicides
– about 1,600 per year. For children under
the age of 13, these gun homicides most
frequently occur in the home and are often
connected to domestic or family violence.
Currently, Missouri has no laws prohibiting
convicted domestic abusers, or abusers
subject to restraining orders, from possessing
guns. While most states have taken
action to keep guns away from domestic
abusers – including our neighbors in
Kansas just this year – Missouri has not.
As Domestic Violence Awareness Month
draws to a close, let’s call on our lawmakers
to pass legislation prohibiting firearm
possession by domestic abusers next year.
It’s time to take action to protect Missouri
families.
Amy Murphy
Time to expand Medicaid
To the Editor:
Healthcare matters to Missouri voters,
and the opioid crisis cannot be ignored.
Attempts to repeal and sabotage healthcare
and protections of the Affordable Care
Act cost 128,000 Missourians to lose their
health insurance in 2017.
And, of course, Missouri’s uninsured
rate is already higher than in other states
because our state has not yet expanded
Medicaid. About 12 million Americans
have gained coverage under the expansion
in 33 states. About 352,000 Missourians
would gain access, according to healthinsurance.org,
if Medicaid was expanded,
and 700 lives would be saved.
In a bipartisan effort to target the U.S.
opioid crisis, now more than ever, is the
time to expand Medicaid. Under Obamacare,
Medicaid expansion is effective. It
already covers addiction treatment for
nearly everyone who is poor and needy,
according to the Associated Press.
In effect, Medicaid expansion states had
a running start on the opioid crisis, while
states, without the extra Medicaid funding,
play catch up.
Non-expansion states deal with more
uninsured populations and are more likely
to need addiction treatment coverage. In
contrast, states with Medicaid expansion
use the grants to create new infrastructure
asking providers to invest in new personnel,
new systems and new ways of doing
things. Medicaid covers 4 out of 10 adults
under age 65 with opioid addiction, more
than all private insurance combined.
In November, Idaho, Nebraska and Utah
will decide whether their states should
expand Medicaid. Montana voters will
decide on maintaining that state’s expansion.
The AP analysis found states that did not
expand Medicaid spent $2,645 per patient
on opioid addiction treatment. Expansion
states spent $1,581 per patient for treatment.
States that did not expand Medicaid
spent $1,170 per person served on recovery
support services. Expansion states
spent $446 per person served on recovery.
Medicaid expansion helps stem the
opioid crisis.
Soldiers Memorial: Commemorating service through the lens of St. Louis
By SUZANNE CORBETT
Eighty years ago, St. Louis gathered at
the intersection of Chestnut and North 13th
streets to witness the opening of the city’s
latest architectural masterpiece, Soldiers
Memorial. On Nov. 3, 2018, the crowds
returned to witness its reopening.
Officially dubbed Soldiers Memorial
Military Museum, the $30 million
reboot – a cost covered entirely by anonymous
donors – has transformed the once
neglected monument into a world-class
museum. Stewarded by The Missouri
Historical Society, the public-private
partnership focused on preservation of
the memorial’s architectural integrity and
art-deco elements that Historical Society
President Dr. Frances Levine called “a
labor of love.”
“Great attention was given to restore
the building to its original character,” Soldiers
Memorial Director Mark Sundlov
said. “While everything has been updated,
it doesn’t look like it. Great care was
taken during its preservation to match elements
that were added to the restoration.
For example, [from] the terrazzo floors to
the marble to decorative grate coverings
that were added, [everything] seamlessly
matches the originals. The original art deco
light fixtures have been cleaned and rewired.
The mahogany-lined elevator with its art
deco steel doors is now fully operational.
And the Gold Star Mothers mosaic on the
loggia’s ceiling, which was missing hundreds
of small tiles has been matched and
The 100th anniversary of the armistice ending World War I will be celebrated along with
replaced.”
Restoration included cleaning the iconic
Walker Hancock statues, which have stood
as the museum’s sentries since its 1938
opening. Military history and art enthusiasts
may know Hancock, a native St. Louisan, as
one of the Monuments Men, artists, art historians
and curators who were sent to save
European art treasures during World War II.
With the restoration came an expansion
of gallery space and meeting rooms on the
lower and upper levels, resulting in a doubling
of the memorial’s exhibition space
without enlarging its footprint. Another
standout expansion is the updated Court
of Honor, which was originally dedicated
after World War II. Redesigned, it now
includes a Five Branches Fountain and
reflecting pool along with the city’s Korea
and Vietnam war memorials.
Chestnut Street also has been revamped
into a single lane that bisects the Court of
Honor and the Memorial, creating a visual
connection that inspires a welcoming feel
in spite of its enormous size.
Unlike other military memorials across
the country, including the National World
War I Museum and Memorial in Kansas
City, Soldiers Memorial’s interpretation
and preservation of American military history
is presented through what Sundlov
calls “the lens of St. Louis.”
“Soldiers Memorial interprets all U.S.
military from a St. Louis lens. Looking at St.
Louis’ involvement in conflicts throughout
U.S. history from the revolution to present
day conflicts,” Sundlov said. “It’s a holistic
look, highlighting St. Louis stories that
occurred during those conflicts along with
stories of service from those who fought
[and] those who made contributions from
the home front. This is not a museum about
war. It’s a museum about people and a
memorial to the people who served.”
Mikall Venso, Soldiers Memorial military
and arms curator, explained how those
stories are told via the museum’s long-term
exhibit “St. Louis In Service.”
“We start in the East Gallery, which
begins with St. Louis’ only American Revolution
battle, Battle of Fort San Carlos,
which stood downtown at what is now
the intersection of Walnut and 4th Street,”
Venso said. “From there, we go through the
conflicts through World War I. The West
Gallery picks up with the story with World
War II and goes through current conflicts.
During a visit you can interactively build
your own gunboat or search for individual
stories from the 1,075 names listed on
memorial’s cenotaph, the centerpiece of
the loggia that rests under the Gold Star
Mother’s ceiling mosaic.”
Commemorating the centennial of the
end of World War I, the war touted as “the
war to end all wars,” is the first special
exhibit presented in the newly renovated
Soldiers Memorial Military Museum.
“World War I: St. Louis and the Great War”
tells the story of what life was like in St.
Louis during a time of great change, both
domestic and abroad.
A perfect time to visit Soldiers Memorial
and see those items and more is Veterans
Day weekend, Nov. 10-12.
Baseball team locked out of O’Fallon
stadium after rent delays
By JESSICA MESZAROS
The Rascals may have River City in their
name, but they might be looking for a new
stadium to call home.
As of the evening of Oct. 22, the city
of O’Fallon locked the River City Rascals
professional baseball team out of
CarShield Field, 900 TR Hughes Blvd.,
after the team allegedly failed to pay rent
on multiple occasions.
Formerly T.R. Hughes Ballpark,
CarShield Field stadium served as the
home of the River City Rascals Frontier
League baseball team in addition to the
Christian High Eagles baseball team.
The initial lease agreement the team
signed was to gradually pay back the debt
over time, but city officials say the team
has not held up its end of the plan, resulting
in the termination of the lease.
CarShield Field
According to a 2017 lease agreement
with the city and verified by O’Fallon
Communications Director Tom Drabelle,
the Rascals owed an estimated $122,000
to make up for missed payments.
As for the late rent payments, according
to Drabelle, the team currently owes
O’Fallon a 2018 overdue balance of about
$49,066.67. Per the last negotiated lease,
the Rascals are paying the city about
$12,100 per year for previously due rent.
The team is currently on the 2018 payment
but still owes a remaining $48,400 in four
equal installments over the next four years
to fully pay back rent. According to Drabelle,
this portion is not past due according
to the current lease, but it is the result of
previously unpaid rents that were negotiated
into the most recent lease.
According to Drabelle, the city is currently
examining other options for the ballpark,
including bringing in a different team
or drawing up a new deal with the Rascals
to still utilize the stadium sometime in the
future.
“Traditionally, it doesn’t get used much
in the winter anyway because it’s only
been hosting the Rascals and some other
events that are usually in the spring and
summer,” Drabelle said, “So, this is the
downtime for it anyway. We are definitely
looking at options, from other teams to
more events. Basically, anything is still on
the table, including the fact that we’re still
having discussions with the Rascals.”

Emily’s Ride: how a local teen
inspired a legacy of love
Emily Linneman continues to have an
impact on people’s lives nearly three years
after she lost her brave fight against cancer
– and that impact doesn’t show signs of
going away.
“Although we lost Emily with our eyes
and ears, she is with us, as we carry on her
legacy by doing more, living with grace,”
says a page on the Emily’s Ride website.
Emily’s Ride, a 501[c][3] nonprofit,
helps to grant the wishes of children with
cancer, assists their parents with paying
bills, and provides needed items that medical
insurance won’t cover. The ride is one
of several fundraising efforts in Emily’s
name, orchestrated by family members
and others who were touched by her life.
Emily was 17 when she passed away
on Dec. 12, 2015. Her mother, Kimberly
[Kim] Christ Linneman, says those that
loved her as a family member or fell in
love with her when they met are simply
carrying out her daughter’s wishes.
“Emily was wise beyond her years and
she would have moments when she would
say ‘I want you to help others when I’m
gone,’” Kim said, noting that a lot of
people helped them when Emily was sick.
Emily was diagnosed with osteosarcoma,
a form of bone cancer when she was just
starting high school at Holt High in Wentzville.
“When she was first diagnosed, the doctors
said they caught it early, and it was in
a good spot, and she had a great chance to
survive,” Kim said.
Her left leg was amputated below the
knee and she went into remission for eight
months. Then, cancer came back. Emily
didn’t want to have her other leg amputated,
so doctors removed part of her kneecap
and shin bone, replacing them with
metal. But cancer came back as an inoperable
tumor in her leg.
Kim knew what a serious family illness
could mean – bucket lists and bills to pay
often without the means to pay them. Emily’s
father, Jeffery A. Linneman, passed
away from leukemia in 2010.
Emily’s bucket list included playing basketball
and softball again on a limited basis.
She got a tattoo, a miniature pig as a pet and
a ride on a Harley motorcycle in the first
Emily’s Ride event. She also fulfilled her
last wish; she got married – in a way.
Emily and Jake Schroer fell in love and
exchanged vows at a special ceremony in
October 2015. Big Dave, a tattoo artist and
ordained minister officiated the ceremony
in front of many of the couple’s friends and
family. Even though it wasn’t a real marriage,
Emily had always wanted to be a bride.
She lost the use of her legs three days
before the ceremony and couldn’t walk
down the aisle. “I think she knew what
was happening,” Kim said. By the end of
October, hospice care was in the offing.
Emily wasn’t apt to talk about herself or
complain. Her mother said she felt bad for
smaller children who were fighting cancer.
“She always commented, ‘They are small
and shouldn’t have to go through this,’”
Kim said. “She would have something
delivered and say, ‘Mom, see how happy
that made me, so make sure you do that
when I’m gone.’”
These days, Kim, her mother Catja
Christ, her sister Nicole, and Emily’s
brother Brendan and sister Breanna along
with other family members and friends
remain busy.
In August, Kim and others stopped by
SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s
Hospital to meet Tiana and her mom. Tiana
is battling osteosarcoma in her pelvis and
trying to finish her senior year in high
school. Emily’s Ride donated $2,000 to
them.
“Thank you all who help and donate to
Emily’s Ride,” Tiana said in a message
posted to the Emily’s Ride Facebook page.
“You really have no idea how this helps my
heart!”
From mouse races to the motorcycle ride
to other activities, Kim said Emily’s team
had raised as much as $16,000 annually
since her death. Leads on who gets donations
come from contacts at Cardinal Glennon
and friends’ suggestions.
“Someone from the childhood cancer
community will reach out to me and say,
‘Hey, I know someone who needs help, this
is their Facebook page,’” Kim said. “And
Francis Howell North High held a 5K to raise money for Henderson Elementary’s
backpack program.
bulletin
board
By ELLEN LAMPE
Inaugural 5K supports
school’s backpack program
The Francis Howell North High football
team recently held its first-ever Knights Give
Bear Necessities 5K benefiting Bear Necessities,
a program at Henderson Elementary that
provides food to students in need.
The program currently feeds more than 60
students, and partners with Harvester Church
of the Nazarene to feed these students over
the weekend when they can’t get school
lunches. FHN Football Coach Brett Bevill,
an alum of Henderson and FHN, heard about
Bear Necessities and saw an opportunity for
the team to help its community.
The 5K route began in the FHN football
stadium, traveled through Laurel Park and
ended with a dash to the 50-yard line. The
football players cheered on the participants
and threw passes to the finishers.
“It’s important to support local backpack
food programs such as Bear Necessities,”
Bevill said. “Those that don’t know where
or when their next meal is coming from
are given the comfort in knowing that programs
like this exist to help.”
While this year’s event was a success,
Bevill already has big plans for next year.
“The first year was great, but I really see it
growing to a much bigger event,” he said.
To further support Bear Necessities, the
football team also designated its Oct. 5
game against Francis Howell High as a
Bear Necessities game. Discounted tickets
were offered to anyone who brought food
to donate. The food and the money raised
from the 5K was presented to Bear Necessities
at halftime.
“We were very touched by the kindness
of others to take care for our students,”
Henderson teacher and Bear Necessities
organizer Tonya Bratsch said. “When students’
basic needs are met, they can come to
school better prepared to be ready to learn.”
Helping to create a
career-ready workforce
Fort Zumwalt School District’s Manufacturing
Day – a partnership between local
chambers of commerce, contemporary
industry needs and comprehensive schools
– celebrated modern manufacturing and provided
students with a glimpse of potential
career paths and the skill sets they will need
to be successful after high school.
More than 250 Fort Zumwalt students
participated in Manufacturing Day in
October, where they got an up-close look
at the innovation and opportunities created
by St. Charles County manufacturers.
In September, ahead of Manufacturing
Day, Fort Zumwalt’s Engineering and
Industrial Technology program was recognized
by the St. Charles County Council in a
proclamation celebrating the district’s longstanding
commitment to career readiness.
Two Francis Howell educators
receive teaching excellence award
Julie Eckhoff and Andrea Head, with the
Francis Howell School District, have joined
an elite group of St. Louis area educators
selected to receive the 2018 Emerson Excellence
in Teaching Award. This award recognizes
teachers for their passion for teaching,
their impact on student learning and their
knowledge and creativity in the classroom.
Julie Eckhoff has worked in the Francis
Howell School District since 1999
and teaches in the primary essential skills
classroom at Henderson Elementary. She
consults with occupational and physical
therapists and brings that knowledge into
her classroom. She has a team of paraprofessionals
that she trains to help each student
achieve more and “reach for the stars.”
“Julie helps take each child’s unique
personality and mold them into fine young
citizens, playing to each child’s strengths,”
said Henderson Principal Dr. Jennette
Barker. “Julie has so many talents and
facilitates learning for some of our most
vulnerable students.”
Andrea Head has been a Library Media
Specialist at Francis Howell Central High
for nine years. A pioneer in her field, she
has transformed the idea of a quiet library
into a collaborative common learning space.
With her team, she has developed a program
that showcases innovative learning techniques
that have been proven to enhance all
subjects at the secondary level. Andrea and
her team also lead Real World Wednesdays,
engaging sessions that focus on life lessons
for teens to apply beyond school.
“Her passion for teaching and learning
is evident in all that she does,” said Assistant
Principal Brian Warner. “Andrea Head
is promoting greatness within the walls of
FHC. As a lifelong learner, she is an inspiration
to us all.”
The Emerson Excellence in Teaching
Awards program annually recognizes educators
in the St. Louis metropolitan area who
are examples of excellence in their field.
Passing on patient portals
University of Missouri researchers have
don’t use them at all, even after signing up
for them.
Online portals allow patients to have
patients dealing with multiple health conditions,
the portals can be especially useful in
monitoring their health status, so they are
encouraged by doctors to use them. However,
the MU researchers found that 35 percent
of people who registered for electronic
patient portals never even logged in.
“We were troubled to see that so many
patients never used the portal,” said Kimberly
Powell, a post-doctoral fellow in
aging, informatics and quality research
at MU’s Sinclair School of Nursing. “We
only looked at registered users, and registering
for the portal is a two-step process
that suggests a degree of commitment. The
fact that many people who took the time to
register never logged in to the portal indicates
there is still work to be done.”
The MU study included patients who
were at least 45 years old, had registered for
an electronic patient portal and had at least
two chronic conditions. Although previous
studies have measured the success of patient
portals by the number of people who registered,
this study looked at how many registered
users actually logged in afterward.
Researchers also identified several factors
that influenced portal use among those
who did utilize them. In particular, patients
who lived farther from their primary care
providers were more likely to use the
Many seniors who could benefit from using
online patient portals to access their medical
records never do so, according to a University
of Missouri study.
portal, as were those diagnosed with heart
failure.
Powell said patient portals have the
potential to improve shared decision-making
in care facilities such as nursing homes,
but providers must first integrate portals
more seamlessly into clinical care and help
guide patients in how to use them.
Widespread disability
About a quarter of all U.S. adults currently
are classified as having a disability
– but the type of disability tends to vary by
age, according to a new report from the
U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
[CDC].
The CDC’s most recent Morbidity and
Mortality Report noted that cognitive disabilities
such as serious difficulty concentrating,
remembering or making decisions
are more common among younger adults,
while disabilities involving mobility are
more common among older Americans.
Overall, mobility disabilities are also the
most widespread [13.7 percent], followed
by cognition [10.8 percent], independent
living involving difficulty doing errands
alone [6.8 percent], hearing [5.9 percent],
vision [4.6 percent] and difficulties with
self-care [3.7 percent].
In addition to mobility disability, hearing
World Kindness Day on Nov. 13 reminds people of the many benefits of doing
good deeds, no matter how small.
health
capsules
By LISA RUSSELL
Kindness … it does a body good
World Kindness Day will be celebrated
this year on Nov. 13. On that day, people
in the U.S. and around the globe are asked
to attempt to make the world a better place
by doing and promoting good deeds and
pledging acts of kindness, either as individuals
or as organizations.
In addition to its obvious benefits for the
mind, heart and spirit, kindness has been
shown in multiple studies to benefit the
body as well. In adults, it has been shown
to increase overall physical well-being
while decreasing pain, anxiety levels and
blood pressure. In children, making conscious
efforts to be kind is also related to
increased physical well-being as well as
greater peer acceptance, a more positive
self-image and even academic success.
World Kindness Day was first launched
in 1998 by The World Kindness Movement,
an organization formed at a Tokyo conference
of like-minded organizations from
around the world. More than 28 nations are
now involved in this annual observance,
which is not affiliated with any particular
religion or political point of view.
At a time when kindness, and even basic
civility, often seem to be the exception
rather than the rule, World Kindness Day
represents an opportunity to highlight the
kindness that does still exist, carry out
random acts of kindness ourselves, and
commit to being kind more frequently.
Decongestants not recommended
to treat children’s colds
As cold viruses start to ramp up over the
fall and winter months, parents face the
annual dilemma of how to treat their children’s
congestion. Unfortunately, a panel
of experts which recently analyzed treatments
for the common cold has presented
recommendations that won’t be of much
help in easing their stuffy noses.
In an article published in The BMJ, Australian
health expert Dr. Mieke van Driel
and colleagues stated that decongestants
or medicines containing antihistamines
should never be given to children under
age 6, and given only with caution to children
6-12.
“There is no evidence that these treatments
alleviate nasal symptoms … and
they can cause adverse effects such as
drowsiness or gastrointestinal upset,” the
panel wrote. In children under age 2, these
medicines have been associated with serious
effects such as rapid heart rate, convulsions
and – rarely – death, they added.
“If parents are concerned about their
child’s comfort, saline nasal irrigations
or drops can be used safely, but this may
not give the desired relief,” they wrote.
Other treatments, such as steam inhalation,
echinacea, vapor rub, eucalyptus oil, and
increased fluid intake, are either not effective
or have not been studied sufficiently
to determine whether they can actually
improve symptoms, they added.
General studies of treatments for the
common cold are also lacking for children,
especially those under 12 who carry
the highest burden from these illnesses,
the panel said. Children come down with
between six and eight colds every year,
while adults average between two and four
colds annually.
New outbreak of Salmonella
caused by raw chicken products
According to an Investigation Notice
published in late October by the U.S. Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention,
[CDC], a recent nationwide outbreak of illness
has been traced to Salmonella Infantis
bacteria found in raw chicken products.
As of Oct. 17, 92 people infected with
the outbreak strain had been reported in 29
states, including Missouri. Of those who
have become ill, 21 people have been hospitalized
to date, but no deaths have been
reported.
The CDC’s evidence indicates that
many types of raw chicken products
from a variety of sources may be contaminated
with Salmonella Infantis. In
interviews, people who have become ill
reported eating different types and brands
of chicken products purchased from many
different locations.
To date, the outbreak strain has been
identified in samples taken from raw
chicken pet food, raw chicken consumer
products, and live chickens. Evidence collected
so far indicates that the outbreak
strain of Salmonella might be widespread
in the chicken industry rather than originating
with a particular chicken supplier,
according to the CDC.
In addition, antibiotic resistance testing
conducted by the CDC also shows that the
strain is resistant to multiple antibiotics.
With this notice, the CDC is not advising
that consumers stop eating properly
cooked chicken, or that retailers stop
selling it. Taking the proper steps of thoroughly
washing hands, utensils, counters
and cutting boards when preparing raw
chicken – and cooking it thoroughly to kill
harmful bacteria – will effectively prevent
the spread of bacteria.
However, the agency recommends
against feeding raw diets to pets. Germs
like Salmonella in raw pet food can make
pets sick, and family members also can be
infected by handling the raw food or caring
for ill pets.
Will rising rates slow home sales?
It’s been a familiar refrain in the housing
market for the past year: There’s strong
demand, but limited supply. That dynamic
appears to be changing as interest rates
inch upwards to 5%. The cost of home
loans may be starting to take a toll on buyer
demand.
The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged
4.86% last week, up one basis point,
mortgage finance provider Freddie Mac
reported. The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage
averaged 4.29%, up from 4.26%.
Historically low interest rates have
helped mitigate the rising cost of buying
new and existing homes. A 5% mortgage
rate isn’t that high by historic standards.
During much of the decade before the
financial crisis of 2008, these rates hovered
between 5% and 7%. But a return to more
normal lending rates won’t feel normal
to many buyers who have become accustomed
to getting a mortgage loan at 4% or
lower, and they could experience sticker
shock at what they would have to pay now
for a home loan.
Here’s what’s new in new homes:
Year-end savings bonanza on move-inready
Fischer & Frichtel Homes
Fischer & Frichtel reports that the best
prices of the year are now available on
move-in-ready homes. Although several
new Fischer communities are coming
online for 2019, the builder recently has
completed a selection of inventory homes
throughout the metro region for buyers
with no time to wait.
Headlining the event in Wentzville,
Wilmer Valley is racing to closeout and
the designer-appointed Hadleigh display
is now for sale at $479,900 – a savings
of more than $60,000. Also available for
immediate possession are two Durham II
ranches, both sale-priced in the mid-$400’s,
with savings up to $27,988.
Three designs from the Heritage Collection
are also owner-ready in Wyndgate
Oaks, Fischer’s amenity-packed neighborhood
in O’Fallon. Featured are a threebedroom
Durham II ranch offered for
$584,900 [savings of $45,665], a 1.5-story
Wyndham offered for $694,900 [savings of
$21,580] and a Woodside ranch offered for
$574,900 [savings of $15,252]. All include
numerous luxury amenities, designer
kitchens, and three-car garages with sideentry
on the Wyndham.
In Cottleville, time is running out to own
in Miralago Estates, but two sophisticated
ranches are ready for their future owners.
The Durham II is sale-priced at $479,900
and the Woodside at $499,900. Both have
been reduced by more than $20,000 and
showcase 12-foot great room ceilings,
deluxe kitchens and sumptuous master
suites.
A private, tree-lined enclave in Weldon
Spring, Ehlmann Farms is spotlighting an
will showcase the firm’s top-selling
Designer Series; and Payne Family Homes
will be introducing an all-new portfolio of
detached villa homes.
The Villages at Sandfort Farm is designed
for homeowner privacy, with numerous
cul-de-sacs radiating from a single main
boulevard. Planned recreational amenities
include more than 33 acres of common
ground, walking trails, a playground and
a swim complex with 3,900-square-foot
pool house.
Preserving the legacy of the land has
been an important factor for the home
builders, St. Charles City officials and
the Sandfort family, whose ancestors had
owned the historic property since 1887. As
a result, the original farmhouse, built in the
1830s, and several other unique structures
will be retained by the Sandforts, lending
character to the new community.
Sandfort Farm is scheduled to open for
pre-sales this weekend from the builders’
nearby neighborhoods. Lombardo will
open from Patriot’s Ridge; Payne family
Homes and McKelvey Homes will handle
pre-sales from the Villages of Provence.
Meanwhile, interested buyers can register
for advance information on the community’s
website liveatsandfortfarm.com, or
Griffey Homes selling MacArthur
Park display, announces new community
If you’re a fan of TV’s “Game of
Thrones,” you’ll recognize the name Dragonstone,
the ancestral castle of House Targaryen.
It’s also the name of Griffey Homes’
newest upscale community on Bates Road
in Dardenne Prairie which will feature a
handful of 1/3-acre and larger homesites.
All of the planned homes will have threecar
garages and most will be walkout sites,
says Griffey sales manager Kim Valerio.
Land development is expected to start soon.
Intrigued? Add your name to the list she
is compiling of potential homebuyers by
calling (636) 936-1923 or emailing kim@
griffeyhomes.com.
In addition to Dragonstone, Griffey has
just purchased 90 acres on Hwy. 94 that
will become The Reserve at Busch Wildlife.
The 3- to 5-acre homesites will be
ready for the spring home-buying market.
The new community is located 6.5 miles
from the Hwy. 40/I-64 exit at Hwy. 94. No
pricing has been announced, Valerio said,
but homebuyers can call her to get on a
mailing list as information comes available.
Meanwhile, Griffey Homes’s Denali
display is for sale at MacArthur Park, a
single cul-de-sac of just 11 homesites on
Central School Road just off Mid Rivers
Mall Drive. The 1.5-story Denali has over
3,300 square feet of living space with four
bedrooms and 4½ baths, three-car garage,
bonus room and many luxurious upgrades.
On a walkout homesite, the Denali is
offered at $525,000.
Also at MacArthur Park, Griffey has an
Acadia ranch Inventory home available,
priced at $435,900, with three bedrooms
and two baths plus a three-car garage.
“Inside you will find a large,
2,300-square-foot, open-concept plan,”
Valerio said. “Stainless steel appliances,
Brittanica from Cambria counter tops,
gray glass backsplash, white 42-inch cabinets
with crown molding, a very large gray
center island and walk-in pantry complete
this dream kitchen. The home has sodded
front and rear yards and is located on a
quiet street.”
Holiday Party Planning:
Stick to what you do best and let others do the rest
By ELLEN LAMPE
Hosting for the holidays this year? Planning
and preparing to host and feed a large
group isn’t easy, and the pressure can put a
damper on the host’s ability to enjoy their
own party.
If you are playing the role of host
this year, remember that you should be
enjoying the party alongside your guests.
Whether this means catering in food so
you don’t have to cook, or hosting the
party in a venue outside of your home –
there are plenty of options for stress-free
holiday hosting.
When it comes to planning
the perfect party, our
advice to you is simple:
stick to what you do best
and let others do the rest.
Food
Love entertaining but hate
cooking? Then having your
party catered is the way to go.
Have you ever been to a
party or event where you
were disappointed that the
food was catered? Neither have we.
Catering ensures your guests will have
excellent food while saving you the hassle
of having to research recipes, endure
crowded grocery stores, find time to cook,
do dishes, dig out your nice serving platters
and all the other things that can make
entertaining stressful. With catering, it’s all
taken care of professionally.
Forget any possible stressful
recipe blunders or “Pinterest
fails.” Having your
party catered will leave a
positive impression on your
guests by ensuring the food
is warm, tasty and plentiful.
Restaurants who cater
typically have menu
options to suit all ages and
dietary restrictions, making
it easy to order a selection
that everyone will enjoy.
The restaurant will be
able to make recommendations on how
much food to order based on your number
of guests, so you don’t have to fret about
running out of food or having loads of leftovers.
If you are a wizard in the kitchen and
plan to take on the task yourself, our best
advice is to prep everything you can in
advance and, again, stick to what you
know best. Sticking to tried-and-true recipes
reduces the chances of a mistake, and
it can actually make cooking quite pleasant
– perhaps evoking a sense of nostalgia
while baking grandma’s famous pie or
reading her cherished, weathered recipe
card.
Want to host but don’t want to do it in
your home? Consider hosting an “off-site”
party.
Many restaurants have rooms for private
parties, which create the perfect intimate
space for your group complete with superb
food. You can still play the role of “host”
in a space like this by bringing in your own
décor and providing entertainment such as
a group game.
This saves all the hassle of having to
cook or clean in your own home, yet you
can still have the satisfaction of planning a
memorable party.
Cater your favorite food there while enjoying
an activity in which the whole family
can participate.
Décor
Part of hosting a holiday party is creating
a warm and festive atmosphere for your
guests. Pro tip: decide on two or three main
colors for your holiday décor for a professionally
coordinated look.
No matter how many stores you stop in
to or whatever assortment of items you buy,
your décor items will complement each other
beautifully if their color schemes coincide.
For example, try a warm bronze/gold,
forest green and white ensemble for “evergreen”
décor. These colors transition nicely
from fall through Christmas and stay relevant
through the rest of winter as they are
not tied to one specific holiday.
Having a color palette in mind for décor
makes shopping easier as you can pass
right by the items that don’t fit.
No winter ensemble is complete without
soft candle lighting. But consider swapping
real candles for battery-operated ones,
which can function on a convenient timer
setting and offer a safer way to set the
mood.
Stefanina’s Pizzeria and Restaurant – a family tradition since 1981
By DEANNE LEBLANC
When 15-year-old Stefanina Vitale
Roderick first came to America from
Sicily, Italy, she likely would not have
predicted the delicious mark she would
leave on St. Louis cuisine.
Her first few decades in the U.S. were
spent working as a seamstress, but in
1981 ‘Stef,’ as she was known to family,
decided to venture into the restaurant
business. Stefanina’s Pizzeria and Restaurant
began in a small strip mall in
O’Fallon and was the best kept secret in
the St. Louis region for many years.
Thanks to reliable staff and invested
family members helping out, Stefanina’s
quickly became the go-to place for great
pizza and Italian food in O’Fallon. By
1984, Stefanina’s had outgrown its original
location and moved to 8645 Veterans
Memorial Parkway.
Throughout the years, Stefanina’s has
steadily grown alongside the growth and
expansion of St. Charles County.
Stefanina’s Pizzeria and Restaurant
When Stefanina retired in 1996,
brothers-in-law Glen Roderick and Bill
LaBeaume joined the family business.
Today, the restaurant has six locations,
most of them owned or managed by Stefanina’s
children and/or grandchildren.
“We have been very fortunate,”
LaBeaume said. “We have had some
employees that have been with us for over
35 years and several employees that have
been with us for over 20 years. There are
even some employees [whose] children
and grandchildren also work here. This is
definitely a family-oriented place.”
Bill and Glen own and manage the Veterans
Memorial location.
The menu features a large variety of
options, including some you would not
expect to find at a pizzeria, such as a Fried
Chicken Dinner, Country Fried Steak and
Chicken Cordon Bleu that is not exactly
traditional. At Stefanina’s, Chicken
Cordon Blue is a breaded chicken breast
stuffed with ham and cheese and served
on a bed of fettuccini, covered with a
Salads are dressed with Stefanina’s’
The pizza dough is made from scratch
if it’s toothsome, hearty pizza you crave,
NEWS BRIEFS, from page 9
The county’s new Major Incident Response Unit is a clinic
on wheels.
Ambulance district
practices preparedness
St. Charles County paramedics have
two new assets ready to roll in the event
of a large-scale incident – a 22-passenger
AmbuBus and a multi-functional Major
Incident Response Unit. Both vehicles
are fully outfitted and ready to respond
to incidents in the St. Louis region and
beyond.
The district’s Major Incident Response
Unit utilizes a recreational vehicle [RV]
platform with slide-out walls to provide
four patient care areas, providing a high
degree of versatility for a variety of incidents.
“The unit can be used as a mobile clinic,
a resource for mass casualty incidents, and
provide rehabilitation care for first responders
on extended emergency scenes such
as multiple-alarm fires and Hazmat situations,”
said St. Charles County Ambulance
District Deputy Chief of Special Operations
& Logistics Jeremey Hollrah. “The
setup gives our team an area out
of the elements to safely provide
rehab and medical surveillance
for our colleagues before
placing them back into action.”
Used in situations where there
are multiple patients requiring
transport, the AmbuBus will be
stocked with trauma and airway
supplies at all times, and can be
outfitted with additional equipment
depending on the specific
needs of the incident.
The AmbuBus is capable of
carrying 12 patients on stretchers
with seating for 10 additional
passengers.
Examples of incidents where the unit
may be utilized would be a serious collision
involving a school bus, or evacuation
of a hospital or long-term care facility following
a serious weather event.
“The bus used for the project was lightly
used by the United States Air Force, and
was acquired by SCCAD late last year.
The AmbuBus conversion kit was purchased
via a grant from the St. Louis Area
Regional Response System [STARRS],”
said Jim Fingerhut, SCCAD Deputy Chief
and Co-Chair of the STARRS EMS Committee.
Though they will be housed in St.
Charles County, the AmbuBus and Major
Incident Unit are available for incidents
that occur throughout the St. Louis
region and beyond thanks to mutual aid
agreements already in place. SCCAD is
an active participant in regional disaster
planning and has sent resources to numerous
regional, state and federal disaster
situations, including the Joplin, Missouri,
tornado and Hurricane Harvey in Texas.
EMILY’S RIDE, from page 12
then we look at it and review it and reach
out to mom or dad and say, ‘Where do
you need help? Does the child need a wish
granted? Do you need help with medical
bills?’”
“One day [Kim] just messaged me out of
the blue,” said Dana Manley, whose foster
child, 5-year-old Sydney, had a form of
kidney cancer. “I knew about her daughter
Emily ... but I really didn’t know her.”
Kim asked if she and her mom and sister
could visit with Dana and Sydney. “They
came to the cancer center and presented
us with a check for $1,000 just to help us,”
Manley said. “They knew ... what it was
like to have a cancer diagnosis and offered
as much help as we needed.” The Manleys
lived in Hermann and had to travel to St.
Louis five days a week for Sydney’s treatment.
“Every week for almost three years,
87 miles one way,” Manley said.
It wasn’t just financial but emotional
support they received, Manley said. “In
the cancer community, the most help
you get often is from the parents of a
child with cancer, or who had a child that
passed from cancer, because they know
what you’re going through,” Manley said.
Diagnosed in March 2015, Sydney’s
cancer returned three times. She had a
kidney removed, multiple chemotherapy
and radiation treatments, a stem cell
transplant, and a very painful tumor on
her liver. She passed in February and, like
Kim, her family has set up a foundation
to help other children experience a wish
come true.
When Sydney passed away, 9,400
people were following her on Facebook,
lending emotional support and prayers.
According to Manley, Sydney said,
“Remember when everybody was sending
me on trips and stuff to experience? I want
you to do that for other kids.”
“So that’s why we did the Bucket List
Foundation,” Manley said.
“She got to do a lot of things she wanted
to [do] and she wanted to make sure that
other kids got that, too,” Manley said.
Part of what motivates Manley and
Kim is keeping their daughters’ names
on people’s minds.“You don’t want your
kids to be forgotten,” Kim said. “If you do
something in her name, her name always
gets brought up.”
Brian Miller, director of marketing and
communications with the Make-A-Wish
Foundation of Missouri & Kansas, said
the philanthropic nature of the St. Louis
community “is second to none.”
This year, it’s actually third.
According to a 2017 assessment of
America’s most charitable cities by Charity
Navigator, St. Louis ranked third in
charitable giving among the nation’s
30 largest metropolitan markets. It was
second in 2016.
Miller notes that many established nonprofits
started as grassroots movements,
including Make-A-Wish in the 1980s.
Today, the nonprofit is on course to grant
wishes for more than 340 children in Missouri
and Kansas this year. Emily was a
Make-A-Wish recipient.
“To see one of our wish families decide
to what we call ‘wish it forward’ and
do good for others after they received
something is very inspiring and shows
the caring nature of the St. Louis area,”
Miller said.
Social media has helped spur this movement,
Miller said.
“As far as the philanthropic landscape
is concerned, online giving is trending
up and I don’t see it slowing down. The
emergence of that is definitely fueling
how we create communities of giving in
St. Louis and there are a lot of wonderful
causes,” Miller said.
The work in Emily’s name remains
ongoing, Christ said, noting that the battle
against cancer is “an expensive battle.”
She said Emily’s family was blessed
because Kim had insurance, compared to
parents they’ve met who don’t.
She added that the people involved with
their fundraising effort seem to like doing
it. “We have such a wonderful time that
evening [or day], it’s just amazing to see
the enjoyment between the people that
work [the event] and people that come
to participate,” Christ said. “They don’t
think twice about giving their money. It’s
very heartwarming.”
She also is amazed by the children.
“When you get on these [hospital] floors
and see these kids, and, yes, they have
terrible days, yes, they’re grumpy a lot of
times, but it amazes me how they always
have a smile,” Christ said.
Kim offers this advice for families
fighting a serious illness:
“First and foremost, if people are offering
help, take it,” she said. “There is no
need to do it on your own if there are
people willing to help. Doing it all on
your own will wear you out.
“Secondly, don’t take stressful words to
heart. As a caregiver, you are going to be
yelled at more than anybody by the person
who loves you more than anybody. They
know you’re not going anywhere and they
have to yell at somebody.”
Kim said she does not anticipate the
fundraising efforts of Emily’s Ride going
away anytime soon. “I would think as
long as I’m physically able to do it [I
will],” Kim said.
She noted, when the group receives
donations and awards gifts, they try to
take a photo to post on the Emily’s Ride
website [emilysride.org] and Facebook
page “to show the people donating to us
where their money is going.”
