Glencoe 150: The
countdown continues
The countdown to the Village of Glencoe’s
150th birthday is on! With less than
two months until 2019, the Sesquicentennial
Planning Committee has kicked into
full swing to make sure that the year is
packed with fun, inclusive and educational
events for the entire community to
enjoy.
To get the celebration started, the
Village of Glencoe, Glencoe Historical
Society and the Glencoe
Chamber of Commerce have
partnered to make the annual
Light the Lights event bigger
and better than ever before!
Get in the holiday spirit from
4-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, in
downtown Glencoe with a lighting
ceremony, a “Wine and Beer
Stroll,” caroling, photos with Santa,
live reindeer petting and trackless train
rides through our beautiful downtown.
And to get your holiday shopping started,
many of our downtown businesses are
starting Small Business Saturday specials
a day early and will stay open late for the

While we’re all gearing up for a great
party, celebration is just one pillar of the
year overall. The year will include four
main elements: education, celebration,
participation and appreciation. Here’s a
preview of what you have to look forward
to in 2019:
Education
Multiple educational events and activities
are planned throughout the year. Of
note, the Glencoe Historical Society is
excited to be accepting nominations for
the Glencoe 150 Hall of Fame. The stories
of Glenconians who made Glencoe or
the world a better place will be heralded
throughout the year. To be considered an
individual must have been born, lived or
worked here in Glencoe. Submit a nomination
at www.glencoehistory.org.
Celebration
From the Glencoe 150 Hall of Fame
Dinner, to a musical tribute to Glencoe
at Writers Theatre, to a gala
at the Chicago Botanic Garden—2019
will be a year to
remember! We’re excited to
share event dates and preliminary
details in a printed celebration
calendar, set to hit all
Glencoe mailboxes in late November
2018. A digital version
of the calendar and more specific
event details will also be available
at www.glencoe150.org.
Participation
Glencoe residents will be asked to dedicate
150 minutes to volunteer in some capacity
within or representing Glencoe.
Appreciation
Idea generation for a legacy project
(a lasting gift to future generations of
Glencoe residents) is still underway. Stay
tuned for more information on how to
share your ideas.
While plans are steadily coming together,
the Sesquicentennial Planning Committee
still needs your help! The Committee
invites any individual interested
in serving on a planning subcommittee to
fill out the “Get Involved” form at www.
