The way to your dog’s heart — reward-based training
Welcoming a new dog to your
family is such an exciting time.
Whether you are getting a pup
from a breeder or adopting an
adult dog it is vitally important
that you set the dog up for success
so he becomes a much loved
addition to the family.
Finding a trainer can be a
daunting process - there are so
many to choose from as well as
different methods of training —
for example, group classes vs.
private sessions vs. board and
train. What is best for you and
your dog?
Luckily for most dogs about
to enter training, the teaching
strategy has progressed significantly
in the last 20 years. The
outdated method of using techniques
based on aversion therapy
is being replaced by force-free,
fear-free, reward-based training.
Having your dogs execute behaviors
out of fear is becoming
a thing of the past.
So, why do so many trainers
still continue to use and promote
aversive tools such as the prong
collar, the choke collar and the
e-collar? This old school method
of using correctional tools is certainly
quick and can be almost
instantly effective. However,
what such trainers fail to tell you
is it can also have severe longterm
damaging effects to both
the dog’s
physical and mental health
and can exacerbate aggression.
A good dog trainer should never
have to resort to these cruel
training techniques to mold a
dog into a well behaved pet.
Dog training can be and always
should be fun for all parties
involved so find a positivereinforcement
trainer who uses
modern methods of training.
You and your dog will enjoy
a fabulous bond built on trust,
mutual respect and most importantly
you can have tons of fun
together.
Private in-your-home lessons
are a fabulous way to train your
dog as the whole family can be
involved. The trainer can help
you control the environment so
that it is easy for the dog to learn
the house rules by making good
choices, choices he will continue
to have throughout his life.
If you are getting a young pup,
the most important thing you
can do in addition to training
is to socialize him so he grows
into a happy, confident dog. This
means introducing him (without
overwhelming him) to things he
may experience as an adult dog
such as meeting new people,
mixing with other dogs, floor
surfaces, sounds, scooters, bikes,
garbage trucks etc.
When you are introducing
your pup to these new experiences,
give him a tasty treat so
he draws a positive association
with these potentially scary situations!
We should consider ourselves
lucky to be able to share our
lives with our canine companions.
Let’s treat them all with
respect, love and kindness!
