Consider a smartphone that projects fi lms on the wall. Tired of mowing your lawn? A robot lawn mower will do the job for you. Family planning? A new gadget will enable you to pinpoint your ovulation. Our lives may be pretty darn comfortable, against the largely Hobbesian backdrop of human history, but there’s no reason why our stuff can’t be even more convenient, yes? Brenda Rees combs the fi eld for 10 standouts in new personal tech. Of course, some new technology does a lot more than make life easier — it saves lives. We’re talking about biotech, which is burgeoning in Pasadena. Marcia Vickers surveys the biotech landscape here and fi nds that the city is on track to become a major research hub, along with San Francisco and Boston.
