Stories Project.
Lyttelton stories app goes live

MORE THAN a dozen stories
from Lyttelton people about their
suburb are available at the touch
of a button.
The Our Stories Project phone
app was launched on Thursday
and will share stories about
Lyttelton when users are near
places associated with the tale.
Creator and Lyttelton resident
Kris Herbert said the free app
may be launched this week on
Apple and Android devices, with
the port stories available as a
one-off purchase.
Audio recordings of stories
from 20 current and former
Lyttelton residents have been
collated in the app.
Users will be able to listen to
the recordings at any time, but
Ms Herbert said the best way
to use it was while exploring
Lyttelton.
The app could be set to alert
the user or auto-play a story
when they are near the place
associated with the story.
“It’s a beautiful way to
understand a place,” Ms Herbert
said.

While it included a map and
directions, users will be free to
explore at their own pace.

Ms Herbert, a freelance
journalist, said the project
began in 2016, with pupils from
Lyttelton Primary School doing
the interviews.
She said the pupils were given
set questions but were “welcome
to ask any other questions that
came to mind.”
The interviews had been a
good way to build connections
in the port, Ms Herbert said.
Her favourite example was when
a group of “hoodie-wearing”
teens interviewed a 98-year-old ​
woman.
“Watching these teenage boys
. . . hearing stories of World War
2, the port strikes, polio scares,
I just saw their jaws drop. They
were understanding that these
historical events were real.”
Some of the stories cropped up
multiple times like the infamous
Goat Man who was said to have
lurked in the Canterbury St
Cemetery.
“There was a real era where
there was someone that kids
were scared of around the
cemetery. I think eventually we
will make a whole Goat Man
tour.”
