City Girl Confessions
When the cold rolls into Glencoe
Kelly Anderson
Contributing Columnist
There is always
something fun (and
mildly alarming)
about seeing a chance of
snow in a weather forecast.
It’s the sort of jolt
that I need to truly accept
that warm temps are gone
and the trifecta of gloves/
hat/scarf are moving in.
But let’s get real: cleaning
up after a few gloriously
warm seasons is a
giant headache. Let me
paint the picture for you.
My backyard is a sporting
goods store. There are
footballs, baseball mitts,
tennis racquets, soccer nets
and golf balls strewn everywhere.
Now that leaves
have fallen and landscaping
is a bit more empty,
these items are much more
visible. This visibility
yielded some unexpected
treasures: a Nerf football
ravaged by raccoons, an
umbrella that none of
us recognized, and that
baseball mitt that my son
couldn’t find four weeks
ago when we scoured the
house and ended up being
late to practice. Ahh, summer
memories.
For now, our garage
is spotless. We’ve stored
bikes on ceiling hooks
and placed patio furniture
in a designated storage.
Our cars have plenty of
room to be parked. We
even have snow shovels
and bags of salt at the
ready. But soon enough,
I know that there will be
boots and muddy snow
pants flung everywhere. A
glove will go missing on
a daily basis. There will
be a muddy/salty/snowy
build up on every visible
surface. The garage will
eventually give in to the
season’s mess.
And slowly, I’ve adapted
to the colder wind that
ripples off Lake Michigan
these days. Gone are the
sandals and jean jackets.
Boots and parkas are now
cluttering up closets, and
I often find myself headed
somewhere only to realize
I’m missing a warming
layer — a hat perhaps?
Maybe a puffer coat? I’m
simply not used to needing
all of that.
The other morning, I
took my kids to the park
at Glencoe Beach before
school. This was oddly
fascinating to them- they
didn’t recall ever visiting
the beach during its off
season.
“It’s a special time to
come here,” I shared.
“The Lake is very serene,
very peaceful. It’s a good
place to sit down with
your thoughts.”
They took off running,
clad in thick winter coats,
just happy to be outside.
Kids feed off of change;
it’s a little tougher on us
adults.
There’s a somberness to
this kind of visit- almost
like the beach is missing
Kelly Anderson’s children overlook Lake Michigan
while the seasons change. Photo Submitted
it’s liveliness. No energy
from families meeting up.
No lifeguards, no colorful
beach umbrellas. No smell
of sunscreen or picnic
lunches.
And yet, it’s one of
my favorite times to visit
Glencoe Beach. Because
I walk away from it’s
silver-blue landscape
with a little perspective,
a little prayer for the cold
weather to come.
I’ll confess, it’s important
to nudge our way
through these seasonal
transitions, even when
they’re a little somber or
barren. We’ve changed
our clocks, our homes,
our yards, our clothes ...
somewhere in all of that,
there are changes taking
place within us as well.
Snow in the forecast,
holidays on the horizon.
There is a lot going on but
sometimes it’s nice to just
sit on a bench at a closed
beach and remember what
was.
Five subjects in stolen
vehicle attempt to elude
police near Northbrook-
Deerfield border
The Deerfield Police
Department has five subjects
in custody after a
vehicle, believed to be stolen,
crashed into two other
vehicles on Lake Cook
Road near the Northbrook-
Deerfield border, according
to Thomas E. Keane,
deputy chief of the Deerfield
Police Department.
According to Keane, the
Kenosha Police Department
alerted towns along
Route 41 that it was tracking
a stolen vehicle that
was reportedly in the area.
The vehicle made its
way into Highland Park
when an officer saw it turn
onto Lake Cook and proceed
Westbound, according
to Keane. Per Keane,
the vehicle then turned
down a street near P.F.
Chang’s, turned around
and proceeded eastbound
on Lake Cook.
The vehicle next attempted
to go between two
cars, which were stopped
at the traffic light, and
made contact with both,
resulting in a traffic accident
that disabled the vehicle,
per Keane. Shortly
after, a Deerfield officer
pulled up to the scene and
saw the subjects from the
stolen vehicle attempt to
flee the scene.
With the assistance of
the Northbrook and Highland
Park Police Departments,
the Cook County
Sheriff’s Department, and
other local agencies, five
individuals are now in custody.
“They are an assortment
of adults and juveniles,”
Keane told The Northbrook
Tower. “No one has
been officially charged yet.
We’re still investigating
and working with Kenosha
Police Department to
try and determine what we
have here.”
