(Page 3) From the Editor Breaking on Election Day for a read-aloud Megan Bernard megan@glencoeanchor.com On a busy and chaotic Election Day last week, I stepped out of the newsroom for an hour to read at South School in Glencoe. My visit was part of South School’s Readers are Leaders, a three-day reading program that includes an author visit and parent reading groups with students. The day I was invited to partake in included guest readers from the Glencoe community. The guest readers, including myself, were to explain why reading is important to our professions and how reading has made us successful, then read aloud one of our favorite books. During my afternoon visit, I started out in a kindergarten classroom, where I read a book about the 100th day of school. Only on their 40-something day of school, the youngsters looked at me wide-eyed and excited to learn about what’s in store for their special day. With this young class, I was told I may not get that many questions after I read my book, but so many little hands eagerly rose when it was time. Questions topics ranged from the 100th day of school to even how the paper is printed each week. It was fun to hear what was on their mind and see them learn in the process of the short visit. Upstairs in second grade, I read my favorite childhood book, “Arthur’s Birthday.” As a former “Arthur” fan club member, I was so happy to hear some of the students were familiar with these books, too. As I read the book, all of the students were so well behaved and engaged. Afterward, when I shared my information about my duties at The Glencoe Anchor, the students’ questions were so intelligent. “What’s your writing process like,” asked one student. Another asked, “How many times do you revise your sloppy copy (a rough draft)?” I thoroughly enjoyed sharing the book, what my workday looks like and why reading has impacted my life. In both classrooms, I also asked students if they were ever featured in The Glencoe Anchor before — a couple had been featured in different event coverages, but some had not been. So without further ado, here are the bright minds that blessed me with a much-needed break on one of the busiest days of the year. I needed the break more than they will ever know.
