Girls Volleyball Coach of the Year Thelander’s foundation sets Ramblers up for success Michael Wojtychiw Sports Editor When Mallory Thelander took over as Loyola Academy’s girls volleyball head coach last spring, one of the first things she wanted to do was change the culture of the program. The team was coming off of an upset in the regional semifinals and needed a fresh start. “I wanted to develop a sense of culture throughout the program, not just varsity,” Thelander said. According to Thelander, a lot of teams do big sister, little sister program, but when she was the head coach at Evanston the Wildkits did what she called families. Groups of four to five girls, all at different program levels, made up a group of volleyball players that would meet together before matches to support the team. “I wanted those girls to get to know me but also get to know each other,” the coach said. It didn’t take long for the girls to buy into the program, Thelander said. The athletes embraced that culture throughout the season. The newly adopted culture could even been seen in the stands, as members of the varsity team attended freshman and junior varsity matches, and players from the younger levels showed their support for the Ramblers at their supersectional match against Prairie Ridge. The Ramblers won 30 games, beat Mother McAuley for the first time in program history, won a sectional title for the first time since 2015 and got within one match of going to the state’s final four for only the second time. “Coming into the season, I definitely thought that we should go fairly far in the postseason,” the coach said. “Going into the regional championship, it was kind of one of our big goals that I had for them was to at least make it to the sectional round. I was very excited when we actually made it all the way to the supersectional; especially after that big win against Hersey.” With three seniors committed to play Division-I volleyball next season, many expected the Ramblers to make a deep playoff run. Mary Kate Lopez (Oregon State University), Elizabeth Ford (University of Pennsylvania) and Anne Martinson (Colgate University) were all key components to Thelander’s lineup this season, but there were two moments that really solidified Thelander’s suspicions. “We had just played New Trier in their tournament, the first tournament of our season, and we lost to them in three,” she said. “Coming back three days later and just annihilating them, I think that was kind of in my head like, ‘OK, these girls are here to compete, truly.’” The Ramblers success won’t be a one-off situation either, Loyola will lose four senior starters from this year’s squad, eight seniors in total, but the future of the program will not dim. Multiple members of this year’s varsity squad saw plenty of action on the court due to injuries sustained by some of the starters, giving them valuable experience. They will be joined by a junior varsity squad that finished the season with a perfect 32-0 record. For the complete story, visit GlencoeAnchor.com.

Thanks to the help from area coaches, and the eyes of 22nd Century Media staff, the best players were selected from six high schools — Glenbrook North (GBN), Glenbrook South (GBS), Highland Park (HP), Lake Forest (LF), Loyola Academy (LA) and New Trier (NT) — in our coverage area. First Team Second Team Outside Hitters Alyssa Thrash, LF junior • 243 kills, 270 digs; The second-year varsity player, and team MVP, led the Scouts in kills and had the second most digs on the team. OUTSIDE HITTER Ireland Hieb, HP senior • 292 kills, 43 aces, 132 digs, 33 blocks; The Team 22 First Team returnee had an impressive end to her career, leading the Giants the same year she was named Central Suburban League North Division Player of the Year. OUTSIDE HITTER Mary Kate Lopez, LA senior • 248 kills, 70 blocks, 389 assists; An Oregon State commit, and the first Loyola Pacific-12 Conference recruit, Lopez was the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference Player of the Year and earned All- Conference honors. Middle Blocker/Hitter Elizabeth Ford, Loyola senior • 117 kills, 69 blocks; The University of Pennsylvania commit didn’t let missing eight games due to injury get in the way of a strong season. She was an All-Conference honoree. Middle Blocker/Hitter Maggie Bodman, NT junior • 127 kills, 69 blocks; The CSL All-Conference selection always seemed to be there whenever the Trevians needed a big kill. Taite Ryan, NT senior • 145 kills, 25 aces, 177 digs, 27 blocks; A CSL All-Conference honoree and Dartmouth College commit, Ryan was a key part of a talented Trevians attack. Middle Blockers/Hitters Gillian Klise, NT senior • 52 blocks, 106 kills; Klise earned CSL All-Conference honors after providing New Trier a threat from the middle. Erin Rosdahl, GBN senior • 137 kills, 47 blocks; The Spartan earned CSL All- Conference honors after she was a steady force for GBN. SETTER Payton Hielscher, NT senior • 517 assists, 38 aces, 123 digs; The CSL Co-Player of the Year helped lead a dominant Trevians attack. Hielscher will play at Boston College next fall. LIBERO Maggie Myers, GBN senior • 300 digs, 23 aces; Named to the CSL All-Conference team, Myers was a consistent player for the Spartans.
