65.4 percent
Bennett — 80,618,
34.6 percent
In one of the state’s most
competitive districts in recent
memory, incumbent
Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield)
comfortably retained
his seat in Congress over
challenger Douglas Bennett
(R-Deerfield).
Schneider won 65.4 percent
of the vote in the 10th
Congressional District to
Bennett’s 34.6 percent, the
largest margin of victory in
terms of percentage since
the district was redrawn
in 2011. Schneider accumulated
152,411 votes to
Bennett’s 80,618.
“This was a campaign
powered by people .... and
we saw it with the result
tonight,” Schneider said
Tuesday, Nov. 6, in his
victory speech to a packed
room of supporters at the
Highland Park Country
Club.
Just two years prior,
Schneider reclaimed the
district for Democrats
by defeating former state
Rep. Bob Dold (R-Kenilworth)
with 52 percent
of the vote, compared to
Dold’s 48 percent. The
race was decided by a difference
of approximately
14,000 votes.
The 2016 matchup
marked the third time
Schneider and Dold vied
for the seat, with Schneider
winning in 2012 and
2016, and Dold winning in
2014. But in 2018, Schneider
delivered an impressive
showing of support to
ensure the district would
stay blue.
“We don’t know what’s
going to happen across
the rest of the country, but
here’s what I know for certain
— in our district, in
our communities, the message
we sent two years,
we amplified tonight,”
Schneider said. “We said
we are on the right path
of unity, of opportunity, of
the belief in people, in the
belief of this country and
the understanding of that
we will create our future
by lifting people up, rather
than speaking to people
down. That’s who we are,
and I am proud of our district.”
Bennett, a business
consultant, gathered with
his supporters on election
night at Austin’s Saloon in
Libertyville.
Despite notable endorsements,
Bennett, a first-time
candidate, was not able to
flip the district this cycle.
“The past year has been
an incredible journey for
Join us Monday
me and my family,” Bennett
says in a statement
posted on Facebook the
morning of Nov. 7. “Meeting
with so many people
throughout our community
has been a true blessing,
one that I will cherish for
a lifetime. The 10th District
has shown me that
our community is strong,
our neighbors care about
our future and we still can
work together to make our
nation better. I am humbled
by the outpouring of
support for myself, my
wife and our three children,”
reads the statement
in part.
This election cycle saw
less spending than 2016,
with Schneider raising far
more than his challenger.
According to campaign
finance records, Schneider
received $4.2 million in
contributions from Jan. 1
through Oct. 17 and spent
$2.3 million on operating
expenditures.
Bennett received
$144,750 in contributions
in the same period and
spent $235,242 on operating
expenditures.
In a statement sent out
shortly after his speech,
Schneider outlined his
goals for his impending
term.
“Over the next two
years, I will continue to be
always there, working hard
to build an economy that
works for all of us instead
of just those at the top, improve
our health care, and
make progress on the important
issues, including
college affordability, gun
safety and immigration
reform,” Schneider said in
the release.
