LA County sheriff shake-up possible
Lauren Coughlin, Editor
Los Angeles County
Sheriff Jim McDonnell is
not ready to admit defeat,
despite challenger Alex
Villanueva’s current lead in
the Nov. 6, 2018 election.
“I’m optimistic about the
hundreds of thousands of
outstanding vote-by-mail
and provisional ballots that
have not yet been counted,”
McDonnell wrote in
a Nov. 7 Facebook post. “I
earned about 58 percent of
the vote-by-mail ballots already
processed. There are
thousands more ballots in
the mail.
“Every vote should be
counted, and every voice
should be heard. I’m grateful
for your support, and
hopeful that we can work
together for four more
years of progress and reform.”
Totals as of Monday,
Nov. 12, with 4,728 of
4,728 precincts reporting,
show Villanueva leading
by 335 votes with a total of
867,964 votes (50.01 percent).
Official results from the
Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County
Clerk
are to be certified within 30
days of the election.
Roughly 984,000
LA County ballots
remain uncounted
Submitted by the Los
Angeles County Registrar-
Recorder/County Clerk
Los Angeles County
Registrar-Recorder/County
Clerk Dean C. Logan
reported that roughly
934,000 outstanding ballots
still need to be counted
as of Friday, Nov. 10.
The update includes
123,003 ballots processed
since the evening of the
election, consisting of vote
by mail ballots. The total
election results count is
now 2,098,858, which is
40.36 percent of eligible
Los Angeles County
voters.
The estimate includes
provisional and vote by
mail ballots collected at
the polls, as well as vote
by mail ballots received
in the mail postmarked on
or before Election Day. It
also includes ballots received
through conditional
voter registration. The department
was to continue
to accept additional vote
by mail ballots postmarked
on or before Election Day
through Friday, Nov. 9.
These additional ballots
are not reflected in the estimates
in the accompanying
infobox.
The estimated count of
outstanding ballots must
be verified before being
counted. These numbers
will adjust throughout the
canvass period as the office
processes and counts
ballots. Additionally, vote
by mail and provisional
ballots are subject to verification
of voter qualifications
before counting.
The mission of the
Registrar-Recorder/County
Clerk is to serve Los
Angeles County by providing
essential records
management and election
services in a fair, accessible
and transparent manner.
