RETRO NIGHT FEATURES LONG TIME RIVALS
FRONTS FISH FOR VICTORY OVER STEELHEADS ON HALL OF FAME NIGHT
One of the quickest ways for the Frontenacs to see
how much progress they have made this season
is to take on a division leader. Kingston has started
to rebuild their roster with some younger players,
while the Steelheads have a roster to compete with
this season. That roster has them leading the Central
division at the 20 game mark of the OHL season.
The Steelheads are led offensively by overage forward
Cole Carter. Carter has 18 goals and 9 assists
already this season. Even if Carter doesn’t get his
name on the score sheet, the Steelheads can score
in other ways. Florida Panthers prospect Owen Tippett
has been very good since returning from NHL
camp. In just 14 games with the Steelheads he has
already scored 12 goals. Alan Lyszczarczyk was acquired
from Owen Sound a couple of weeks ago, and
has been a contributor from day one. In 6 games with
Mississauga, he already has 9 points.
The Frontenacs were doing some trading of their
own this week. They acquired 17 year old Lucas
Rowe from the Flint Firebirds on Monday. Rowe is
a former first round pick of the London Knights. He
comes to Kingston with 36 games of OHL experience,
but just 3 points. He will be looking to take advantage
of an opportunity to play significant minutes
on a younger team as the season moves on.
This is the third meeting of the season between
these two clubs. The Steelheads took the first two
decisions on their home ice by the scores of 4-1
and 5-2. This will be the first visit to Kingston of the
season by the Steelheads, a place that they haven’t
found a ton of success over the years. In 44 visits
to Kingston, Mississauga has won just 11 games in
regulation. Kingston, on the other hand, has won 28
times on home ice when facing Mississauga. KF
Following a standout junior career
with the Kingston Canadians, Ken
Linseman attempted to sign as an underaged
player with the Birmingham Bulls
of the WHA in 1977. The effort exploded
into a full-blown legal conundrum
that was eventually settled only when
Linseman and his family successfully
secured a restraining order against the
WHA thus lifting the ban on his aim to
join the Bulls.
In Birmingham, he got his first
opportunity to show the world of
professional hockey just what kind of player he could
be. He was a scrappy, grinding, shifty centreman
who could score, check, kill penalties, and irritate
opponents with a mastery rarely ever seen. He also
had blinking-quick speed on his skates and a mouth
like Don Rickles to boot. He once noted that, in light of
his style of play, he’d have felt embarrassed to win the
Lady Byng Trophy for gentlemanly play.
Linseman joined the Flyers’ organization in 1978-
79. After half a season with the Maine Mariners
of the AHL, he stepped up to the NHL plate for the
remainder of his pro career. In Philly, he soon became
a leading scorer and agitator with the club. As such,
he was thought to be the logical successor to Bobby
Clarke as a team leader. It was Clarke in fact who
christened Linseman as “The Rat,” not because of his
chippy play, but because he tended to lean forward
OFFICIAL GAMEDAY MAGAZINE, VOLUME 46, ISSUE 11
like a rat when he skated.
Over his four seasons with the club,
he spent most of his time skating on the
“Rat Patrol” line with Paul Holmgren
and Brian Propp. As time went on, he
began to fall out of favour with the club.
He attained a reputation for stirring up
trouble that he rarely ever finished. His
welcome finally wore down to the bare
threads as a result of his incessant string
of penalties that hurt team objectives.
In 1982, his rights were traded to the
Hartford Whalers who in turn shuttled
him on to Edmonton on the same day. With the Oilers,
Linseman skated on a line with Glenn Anderson and
Mark Messier. The trio, along with the rest of the
squad, clicked in a big way, dethroning the New York
Islanders as reigning league champs in 1984.
The following year, Linseman was traded to
Boston where he put in more than five seasons of
his trademark Linseman hockey - scoring points,
playing solid defense, and pestering the opposition to
distraction.
By 1989-90, however, his game began to lose
some steam. He was traded back to the Flyers for
a short spell and then put in a single-season return
engagement with the Oilers. His final NHL stop came
with the Leafs where he played only two games in
1991. He then went overseas to play a handful of
games in Italy before hanging up his blades in 1992.
KEEP UP THE MOMENTUM
Last week was a week of building for the
Frontenacs. They put up 4 goals against the
Ottawa 67’s, one of the best teams in Canada,
but struggled defensively allowing 6 goals. Then
they greatly improved the defensive game by only
allowing 2 goals when they faced Hamilton, but
struggled offensively scoring just once. Finally,
on Saturday they put it all together against the
Generals. They scored 5 goals and allowed just
one to put the whole package together and get
a win on home ice. The team improved in each
game they played last week and keeping that
momentum going will play a huge roll in tonight’s
game.
NO SHIFTS OFF
The Mississauga Steelheads have a team that
forces you to play every single shift. 10 players on
their roster have 10 or more points. They aren’t a
team that you can shut down a single line and not
have to worry about being scored on by the other
three. For the Frontenacs to keep the Steelheads
in check, they will need every line to bring their
best every shift. There are no times during a game
against the Steelheads where a team or a line can
take a shift off.
HAVE AN OPEN MIND
The Frontenacs added Lucas Rowe on Monday
through a trade with the Flint Firebirds. Rowe will
make his Frontenacs debut tonight against the
Steelheads. This means that line combinations
will change and that player roles may also change.
During a rebuild, everyone has to be on board with
what the coaching staff is trying to do. It helps the
process move along and everyone on the team
gets better because of it. The results may not
come immediately, but over time keeping an open
mind will be what helps the team succeed.
The Frontenacs needed to start to add some
youth to their lineup after seeing many of their
veterans graduate following the 2017-18 season.
One of the first moves they made was sending a
3rd round pick to the Guelph Storm to acquire
Dennis Golovatchev.
Golovatchev, who is a Toronto, ON native,
played for the Mississauga Reps Minor Midget
team that won the 2017 OHL Cup. Dennis
the Burlington Cougars of the OJHL. He scored 9
goals and 11 assists in 40 games that year.
This season, it appeared Golovatchev would
be headed back to the OJHL. Guelph didn’t
have a spot on their roster for him out of training
camp, meaning Golovatchev was headed to the
Trenton Golden Hawks. He played two games for
Trenton before being acquired by Kingston in a
September 17th trade.
BILLY KIMMERLY
scored three goals in that tournament, including
the game winner in the gold medal game. Fellow
Frontenacs rookie Ryan Dugas was a teammate
that season.
His efforts in the tournament, combined
with the season leading up to it, convinced the
Guelph Storm to draft Dennis in the 3rd round
of the 2017 OHL Priority Selection with the 55th
pick.
Golovatchev wasn’t able to crack the Storm
lineup as a 16 year old and spent the year with
OFFICIAL GAMEDAY MAGAZINE, VOLUME 46, ISSUE 11
That week, Dennis joined the Frontenacs for
practice and was in the opening night lineup
against Peterborough. Just nine days later he
scored his first career OHL goal against the Erie
Otters.
Everytime Dennis steps on the ice, fans can
see that he has a ton of potential. He is still
young and new to the league, but with more ice
time, he will gain experience and become a key
contributor to a rebuilding Frontenacs team. KF
