celebrated and hugely popular Queen’s Hall Series. Immerse yourself<br />

<strong>in</strong> a world of music – from the USA to Russia, from Europe to Australia<br />

– and a profusion of styles to excite and delight every taste, from piano<br />

and song recitals to str<strong>in</strong>g quartets, and from early opera to jazz guitar.<br />

As well as much-loved chamber masterpieces by Mozart, Beethoven,<br />

Schubert and Brahms, there are thrill<strong>in</strong>g discoveries to be made <strong>in</strong><br />

French w<strong>in</strong>d qu<strong>in</strong>tets, a wide-rang<strong>in</strong>g chamber orchestra programme,<br />

and the arrest<strong>in</strong>g music of contemporary British composer<br />

Thomas Adès.<br />

Alongside performances by many of the world’s most respected<br />

established artists, this year’s Queen’s Hall concerts focus on some<br />

of the f<strong>in</strong>est young musicians of today, figures whose acclaimed<br />

<strong>in</strong>terpretations have already made a truly global impact.<br />

The legendary contralto Kathleen Ferrier was one of the f<strong>in</strong>est voices<br />

Brita<strong>in</strong> has ever produced, achiev<strong>in</strong>g world renown and a very special<br />

relationship with the Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh <strong>International</strong> <strong>Festival</strong> through her<br />

memorable performances <strong>in</strong> its early years. This thrill<strong>in</strong>g showcase<br />

of vocal talent celebrates her legacy.<br />

The Kathleen Ferrier Award was set up to honour outstand<strong>in</strong>g young<br />

s<strong>in</strong>gers at the start of their careers, and its w<strong>in</strong>ners represent the most<br />

excit<strong>in</strong>g hopes for the opera houses and Lieder platforms of the future.<br />

London-born mezzo soprano Kitty Whately, praised for her sweet-toned<br />

voice and natural charisma, was the 2011 recipient, and South African<br />

baritone Njabulo Madlala won <strong>in</strong> 2010 with his rich, creamy tones and<br />

dramatic characterisation.<br />

They are jo<strong>in</strong>ed by two masters of the Lieder recital, Sir Thomas Allen<br />

and pianist Roger Vignoles, for a wide-rang<strong>in</strong>g programme contrast<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the rich Romanticism of Gounod and Brahms with the subtle,<br />

evocative impressionism of Debussy, Ravel and Duparc, and also<br />

tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> folksongs from Allen’s Northumbrian and Madlala’s South<br />

African homelands.<br />
