The players of the Calder Quartet from Los Angeles are as at ease<br />
perform<strong>in</strong>g with rock musicians Airborne Toxic Event and Andrew WK<br />
as they are <strong>in</strong> their <strong>in</strong>cisive <strong>in</strong>terpretations of the Classical repertoire.<br />
They have collaborated extensively with British composer Thomas<br />
Adès, and their lyrical performances of his nostalgic Arcadiana,<br />
seven exquisite m<strong>in</strong>iatures evok<strong>in</strong>g idyllic memories of places real<br />
and imag<strong>in</strong>ed, have been widely acclaimed.<br />
Alongside a rapturous short piece by young US composer Andrew<br />
Norman and the glow<strong>in</strong>g melodies of Mozart’s ‘Dissonance’ Quartet,<br />
they also perform Mendelssohn’s last major work, a hugely impassioned<br />
piece full of rage and lamentation, written shortly after the death of the<br />
composer’s beloved sister.<br />

Sa<strong>in</strong>t-Saëns, Obradors, Bernste<strong>in</strong> and Dilys Elwyn-Edwards<br />
Hear<strong>in</strong>g Welsh soprano Rebecca Evans perform is an electrify<strong>in</strong>g<br />
experience. She br<strong>in</strong>gs a warmth and natural charm to her music,<br />
yet her <strong>in</strong>terpretations display her astonish<strong>in</strong>g technical assurance<br />
and a fierce emotional <strong>in</strong>tensity.<br />
Her recital ranges from restra<strong>in</strong>ed yet vivid songs by Purcell to the<br />
tongue-<strong>in</strong>-cheek recipe sett<strong>in</strong>gs of Bernste<strong>in</strong>’s La bonne cuis<strong>in</strong>e,<br />
by way of the languid love songs of Bell<strong>in</strong>i’s Sei ariette. Evans also<br />
<strong>in</strong>cludes a selection of Mozart’s Lieder and the 1977 Nature Songs<br />
by her compatriot Dilys Elwyn-Edwards, as well as two Spanish sets:<br />
Granados’s passionate La maja dolorosa, and folk-<strong>in</strong>spired songs<br />
by Obradors.<br />
Evans is jo<strong>in</strong>ed by the acclaimed Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh-born pianist Malcolm<br />
Mart<strong>in</strong>eau, accompanist of choice for a whole generation of<br />
renowned Lieder artists.<br />
