Match or float rods are usually 3.3m to 4.2m in length. They can be made from fibreglass through to the finest carbons. Most match rods
are 3 piece, but travel versions with several short sections are very popular. Almost all match rods are used with fixed spool reels, but some
anglers still use the older style centre pin. Although very slim, these rods are capable of handling remarkably big fish, such as tench or bream,
as well as the smaller species, roach, rudd .
Carp Angling is a very personal thing. The rods vary in action from a very light 1.5lb to a 3lb or more test curve rod. It is of utmost
importance, that the rod is capable of handling the fish being targeted, as today, in some parts of Europe it is not uncommon to see fish of
more than 60lb. Not a good idea to hook one of these on a 1.5lb rod. Most carp rods tend to be about 3.3 or 3.6 metres and are built
with big fish in mind, with lots of power to be able to control the fish. This type of fishing and the tackle used has come a long way since
Richard Walker was the carp king.
