KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY REPORT
FRONTS LOOK TO TAKE STING OUT OF SARNIA
SARNIA VISITS KINGSTON ON TEDDY BEAR TOSS NIGHT
The last time Sarnia came into Kingston they were
a huge favourite. They came into that game as
winners of 14 straight. The Frontenacs ended that
streak in dramatic fashion. They defeated the Sting
7-2 on November 3, a win that changed the direction
of the season for Kingston. Being able to contend
with a team like Sarnia prompted management to
make some trades and beef up for a lengthy playoff
run.
Things are a little different this season. Sarnia sits
a single game below .500 while the Frontenacs have
gone into a rebuild with many players graduating following
the 2017-18 season. Regardless, Kingston
will look to repeat the success they found in last years
match-up, tonight.
Kingston began life after Robertson and Paquette
on Thursday night in Peterborough. Billy Constantinou
and Ian Martin made their Frontenacs debut in
that game, but will make their home debut tonight
against Sarnia. Cameron Hough is also back from
his suspension and is expected to be in the lineup
against his former team.
The Frontenacs usually find success against Sarnia,
especially at Leon’s Centre. Sarnia has been to
Kingston 24 times in the all time series. Kingston is
15-7-1-0-1 in those games and 6-3-0-1 since the
move to Leon’s Centre. The only loss to the Sting at
Leon’s Centre in the last five years came on November
25, 2016 when Sarnia won 4-3 in a shootout.
That means that Kingston has collected 9 of a possible
10 points at home against Sarnia during that
stretch. KF
It appeared to be a dream start to an OHL career for
defenseman Jakob Brahaney. The Campbellford,
ON native was selected in the second round of the
OHL Priority Selection by the Kingston Frontenacs, the
team closest to his minor hockey Quinte Red Devils
team. Then, he made the Frontenacs out of training
camp and his OHL career was off and running, or so
it appeared.
Brahaney was receiving limited ice time for the
Frontenacs in his rookie season. He showed flashes of
Kingston’s final game of the season against North Bay.
The 2017-18 season was a breakout year for
Brahaney. He played top four minutes all season and
saw some time on the power play. He scored 5 goals
and added 25 assists for his career high 30 points.
However, the number that most impressive was his
team leading +25 rating. Jakob had become a player
that the coaching staff could put on the ice in any
situation. He was helping provide offense for his team,
but remained solid defensively.
BILLY KIMMERLY
skill, but struggled at times while trying to adjust to the
league. After 16 games, Kingston decided to send him
to their affiliate club, the Kingston Voyageurs, to finish
the season. There, he would get more ice time and be
able to boost his confidence going forward.
The following year, Brahaney returned to
Frontenacs camp looking like a new player. He had
added some size and strength to his game, but more
importantly he was making better decisions and doing
so with confidence. He spent the entire season with
the Frontenacs and recorded his first OHL goal in
OFFICIAL GAMEDAY MAGAZINE, VOLUME 46, ISSUE 13
Brahaney wasn’t drafted by an NHL team in his
draft year, but his solid season earned him an invite to
the Vancouver Canucks rookie tournament where he
gained valuable experience to bring back to Kingston.
Jakob has had a strong start to the season this year
as well. He already has 2 goals and 8 assists. With
the team trading Jacob Paquette earlier in the week,
Brahaney is now the player coaches will lean on for
minutes, points and experience to help guide a young
defensive core through their development. KF
STAY FOCUSED
Teddy Bear Toss night can be tough on teams.
When the home team scores, teddy bears are
thrown on the ice by fans to be donated to a local
toy drive. The cause is great, and is well supported,
but it does cause one problem. Immediately after
scoring the first goal, both teams will have to sit
through a lengthy clean up. It could be easy to
lose focus during this time. The players need to
keep their heads in the game to avoid any loss
of intensity when the puck drops again. Giving
up a quick goal after the delay would kill any
momentum gained from making the bears fly.
TIME TO MOVE ON
The Frontenacs traded away two key players
earlier in the week when Jason Robertson and
Jacob Paquette were shipped to Niagara. The
remaining players can’t sulk about not having
those players in the lineup. This is an opportunity
for other players to step up and take on a bigger
role with the team. The team was lucky enough
to get two quality young players back in the deal.
Billy Constantinou and Ian Martin have joined the
Frontenacs. It is time for the team to look ahead
and work on life after Robertson and Paquette.
EMBRACE CHANGE
The team on the ice will look very different than
the one fans saw on Sunday against Hamilton.
Robertson and Paquette are gone and Martin
and Constantinou are in. On top of that, Cameron
Hough is back from his suspension and there is a
chance Paul Larabie could return from his thumb
injury. With so much shuffling happening in the
lineup, there will be lots of players in new roles.
Coaches will be doing some experimenting over
the next few weeks to see what combinations work
and what players are best suited for certain roles.
It’s time for a “yes sir” attitude from the players.
They need to be willing to try new things and
get shifted around. It will eventually help each
individual find success.
y Ian MacAlpine
Kingston Whig-Standard
Billy Constantinou and Ian Martin are happy to be
Kingston Frontenacs. The pair of 17-year-olds,
as well as 11 draft picks, were acquired on Tuesday
from the Niagara IceDogs in return for forward
Jason Robertson and defenceman Jacob Paquette.
Constantinou and Martin came from a team
that’s currently one point out of second place and
three points out of first in the OHL’s Central Division
to the Frontenacs, last in the East Division and in
full rebuild mode.
But both players said after their first practice
on Wednesday afternoon at the Invista Centre that
they’re happy to be in Kingston and looking forward
to the future.
“I’m pretty excited. It’s nice to get things
going here,” Constantinou said. “I feel it’s a good
opportunity for us to show what we can do and help
the team win.”
Martin said he’s excited to be coming to an
established franchise like the Frontenacs.
“I have a lot of respect [for the Frontenacs], so
I’m excited to see what I can do now,” Martin said.
“It’ll be good to come here and focus on the young
guys more.”
They were both asked if they were disappointed
coming from a team that’s expected to make a long
playoff run to the rebuilding Frontenacs.
“In a sense I guess, but at the same time I
thought it’s a great opportunity for Ian and myself.
It’s a rebuilding team and I think we can both step
in and be a big part,” Constantinou said.
Constantinou and Martin were the last players off
the ice at practice on Wednesday.
Both are from Scarborough but had never been
on the same team until they joined the IceDogs in
2017-18. In Kingston, the players will be living with
the same billet.
OFFICIAL GAMEDAY MAGAZINE, VOLUME 46, ISSUE 13
Frontenacs head coach Kurtis Foster liked what
he saw from the pair at their first session with their
new team.
“It’s never easy on your first day. There’s a lot of
information and a lot of change from what they’re
used to,” he said after practice.
Foster talked to both players on Wednesday
morning for about 45 minutes going over systems
but not trying to feed them too much information
too quickly.
“I thought they acclimatized really well,” he
said. “It seemed like they fit right in at practice. A
couple of mistakes here and there, but nothing that
is something we can’t correct, and we’re happy with
the first day.”
Constantinou has been advertised as a good
puck mover on the back end who could eventually
blossom into an elite offensive defenceman in the
OHL.
Constantinou has four goals and 11 points this
season. Martin has a goal and four points.
Foster said Martin showed glimpses of offence at
practice on Wednesday.
Martin will play on the third line with Lucas Rowe
and Matt Hotchkiss while Constantinou will pair up
with 2018 first-round selection Jacob Murray.
“Hopefully they can get accustomed to each
other because they’re two young guys that have a
bright, long future ahead of them, so we’ll start them
together and see if we can get some chemistry right
away,” Foster said.
“We knew that was going to happen at some
point. He’s such an elite guy and losing him is never
easy,” Foster said. “I’ll challenge the guys a little
bit tomorrow about having other guys step up. We
have to do it as a collective group and if everybody
can step up that little bit, we can make up a little
bit of the difference we’re losing with him not here
anymore.” KF
