Professor Bartz is GOMA’s honourable member and he gave his first presentation at the 8th GOMA Symposium on pitting fatigue at rolling and sliding contacts. It was in 1974 in Opatija. Interestingly, at the same Symposium, Professor Peter Jost reported about his famous “The Jost Report” or how friction, lubrication and wear directly and indirectly affected British economy. In that report, the word tribology was used for the first time. The main topic of that Symposium was “Tribology and lubricants application”. The next speaker was Dr. Peter Tjan, President of ATIEL who delivered a lecture about “Developments and major trends affecting the lubricants industry”. Dr. Tjan explained the role of ATIEL and warned that the quality of products claiming compliance will be checked regularly through the SAIL’s product survey programme. He was followed by Andreas Dodos, Chairman of European REACH Grease Thickener Consortium, with particularly interesting and well-accepted presentation entitled “REACH 2018: Roadmap for lubricating grease manufacturers”. All of these plenary lectures gave audience excellent insight into different factors affecting the lubricants industry and great introduction to Symposium. The remaining lectures have been structured into seven thematic sessions: (i) Highlights on the latest development of automotive fluids, (ii) Measuring and laboratory analysis, (iii) Base oils - moving to a higher performance lubricants, (iv) Industrial lubricants: trends and challenges, (v) Experimental investigation as basis for tribological solutions, (vi) Quality and Brand protection and (vii) Recent trends in formulation of MWFs. The first session has provided three lectures. Dr. Robert Kolb from Evonik started with the lecture on Engine Oil Pumpability in a Modern Engine and Jaghar Sidhu from Lubrizol spoke about Driving Efficiency in Commercial Vehicle Engine Lubricants, while Matthieu Vaslin from Chevron Oronite explained Why PCMO is no longer the best choice for 4-Stroke Motorcycles. The last presentation on day one was “SVM Stabinger Viscometer Technology: The Benefits for Lubricants” prepared by Dr. Jelena Fischer from Anton Paar.
